Surprise Mewtwo and Articuno overshadow perfect Zapdos

There's an Articuno raid at the park nearest me right now. What's happening? Is Articuno back, or is this a glitch...?

I'd planned to post briefly this morning to share that I was so very lucky as to catch a 100% IV Zapdos yesterday! Yay! And then I was going to say that I actually hope summer legendary season will end tonight; I'm game-exhausted by these limited-time-only availabilities of the legendary birds. And then I was going to comment on the rampant Ho-Oh speculation. But...

Apparently, Mewtwo has been a raid boss at Pikachu Outbreak! People have caught Mewtwo! And clearly there's this Articuno right now, here, when we all thought that Articuno wouldn't be seen again in the game for many months, if not a year, if not ever.

Why does Niantic do these things on Mondays (work days) instead of weekends?

If all the legendaries are back in the game at high availabilities, I may perhaps feel a little ill-used or tricked for having invested time and effort in catching them while we were told they were limited-time-only. Hmmmm.

Addendum 10:56 PM: Niantic has spoken: Mewtwo and "other powerful pokémon" are coming soon to "Exclusive Raids," and all 4 legendary birds are back through the end of August. Read all about it.

How to keep Blissey off your raid squads

Do you get tired of the game auto-recommending your high-CP Blisseys and Chanseys for raids? What you really want, of course, are pokémon with the type advantages to deal the most damage per second, thus getting you more rewards, and your team more premier balls! For that, I learned this great tip at a raid yesterday, and will try it at the first opportunity:

To keep the game from default-suggesting certain pokémon, assign them as gym defenders, let them faint, and then don't revive them until you want to use them on purpose. The game won't recommend fainted 'mon!

(Blissey, with her unmatched endurance, is the best defender by far! But she's often a marginal attacker. She's slow and lacks super-effective same-type attack bonuses. So it's not considered best form to raid with Blissey/Chansey-heavy squads. It kind of suggests that either you don't know about type advantages, or you expect to be carried by the other trainers' expenditures of effort, revives, and potions.) (I'm so embarrassed when I don't have time to pick all my squad — because of connectivity, lag, app restarting, players already in the lobby, whatever — and the game default sticks me with a wall of pink.)

the game meta can change at any moment (and just did)

After the gym rework, I posted that 3K+ CP pokémon would lose motivation 10 times faster than >3K CP pokémon.

That was true until this weekend. Turns out, it was a bug! All gym defenders were meant to lose motivation at the same rate. Niantic has released an out-of-sequence update (this was a migration week, not an update week) and it's bursting with bug fixes.

Just thought you'd want to know. It's safe to go back to defending gyms with 3K+ CP pokémon. :-)

I caught my first legendary! Articuno!

I was at my desk at work at 7:30 PM when the Discord app chat pinged. There was a legendary raid across the street from my home. Was I coming? You bet! How fast did I turn off my work computer and dash to my car? How far did I push up against the speed limit?

I'd been on 4 previous legendary raids: 1 Articuno (flying/ice), 3 Lugia (flying/psychic). The first was on Saturday night (as previously related), and the others on Sunday (one in the park across the street from my church after mass, one near my home in the afternoon, and one not far from my work in the evening). Each time, those gathered had beaten the raid boss together! Each time, my individual post-raid legendary had fled.

This time, I was down to 3 premier balls when a fellow trainer started helpfully offering advice. I was a little grumpy with him, I'm afraid. (That is not the moment a trainer wants to reconsider her ball-throwing style.)

With my second-to-last premier ball, the Articuno stayed in! 96% IVs. Front breath & Blizzard. I am very lucky!

I understand that Niantic announced this afternoon that Articuno will be around for only a week, at which time Moltres will get a week, and then Zapdos. Lugia will apparently stick around permanently, but get less common...? We shall see. One of each would be perfect! :-D

(Oh, and the bonuses are extended until 5 PM Pacific on Thursday!)

my Lugia raid adventure

I'd walked down the block for a simple little Weezing raid (Level 2) before dinner, to wrap up my GoFest day. I'd done my bit to help during each global challenge window; I'd heard about the problems in Grant Park (poor connectivity, server overload, long lines, etc.); and I was wondering when the bonuses would turn on.

I bumped into a fellow trainer who lives across the street. We beat Weezing together, naturally, and discovered that we work for the same (very large) company. She started to add me to an internal company pokemon group that I hadn't known of... and we saw posts about a Lugia raid boss (Level 5) hatching within the past 15 minutes, 10 minutes drive away!

(BTW, the bonuses have gone live and will stay so until 5:00 PM Pacific on Monday. Double stardust, XP, candy, spawns.)

Now, wasn't I going to do something about dinner...?

participating in GoFest outside Grant Park

Fellow pokémon trainers! As you know, Saturday is GoFest. And GoFest is not only for the lucky few in Grant Park in Chicago. We around the world will also play our parts in releasing the legendaries!

Per Niantic, those in Grant Park can unlock rewards (like double stardust) for everyone globally, while we outside can extend the length of these rewards (like for more days). If we all — inside and outside — win our challenges, then the mystery challenge will unlock. Everyone believes that the mystery challenge is legendary raid bosses! The only question is which.

(Golem with 2 rock moves is the go-to counter for all the legendary birds, as Tyranitar with 2 dark moves is for Mew and MewTwo. If you don't have those, try Omastar and Houndoom, or Sudowoodo and Gengar.)

During the worldwide challenge windows, if you can, go out and catch! Every capture counts. Check your time zone on GoHub. In Pacific Time, the windows are:
  • Challenge #1  9:00 AM to 9:30 AM
  • Challenge #2 11:00 AM to 11:30 AM
  • Challenge #3  1:00 PM to 1:30 PM
Have fun!

most important gym rework fact

Update 30 July 2017: This was a bug. All pokemon now lose motivation at the same rate. Read my post about the change. Or read the original post below:

Fellow pokémon trainers! Just in case you haven't heard or figured this out yet: in the recently renovated gym system, the motivation of 3000 CP and higher pokémon degrades 10 times faster than that of 2999 CP and lower pokémon as gym defenders. (As widely reported, the APK mines show ~10% CP loss per hour for 3K and up, versus ~1.1% for under 3K CP.)

It's not that your teammates are feeding berries only to the weaker pokémon, as I initially wondered, myself. It's that the stronger pokémon are 10 times hungrier.

While at first this felt like nothing but a vile nerfing of our best defenders, I now see two ways it can be useful. First, in the new gym defender prize system, a trainer receives 1 coin for every 10 minutes defended, up to 50 pokécoins per day, received when the pokémon returns home. So if your goal is to maximize your pokécoins to spend (rather than your time-in-gym for your gym badge bonuses), you may want your pokémons' motivation to degrade faster, so that they will return to you promptly with those coins! Second, if your goal is precious, precious stardust, then a hungry 3K+ CP pokémon in a handy gym could give you more total opportunities to redeem berries at 20 stardust per berry.

FKFicFest 2017 is releasing! (Do update your load date to your release date)

The first story of 2017's [community profile] fkficfest is released!

This particular story went first because it's one of the longest this year, and it seemed good to space out the tales that could take more time to read. It's also one of two sharing another characteristic (shh! spoilers!), which also seemed good to stagger for variety.

It did not go first because it was the first loaded, although it was one of the earlier loads. You can see its original loading date of "2017-05-16" right now. Authors can change those dates when their stories release! I'd encourage authors to consider doing so. I'd suggest that when your story releases, you open it to edit and change the date from when it loaded to when it released. I believe that this boosts your story up to the top of the AO3 lists at that time. It gives your story a better chance to be seen by readers who are casually browsing "recently posted" content on your release day. I will do this for the story I wrote.

Yay, FK writers! Yay, FK beta-readers! Yay, FK readers!

All ten 2017 [community profile] fkficfest stories are in our AO3 queue! No pinch-hitters needed!

I'm checking that each looks ship-shape (with a recipient and rating and so on). And I'm drawing up our schedule. The first story will release tomorrow; the last will release June 7.

Just thought I'd note that, with an hour to go, 8 of 10 stories are in our [community profile] fkficfest queue on the AO3. Great work, everyone!

I won't be staying up to watch the others roll in. I'll look again on Sunday morning, Pacific Time (after mass, brunch, and my 7-day streak bonuses in PokemonGo ~grin~).

The first story will release on Monday.

LK anniversary

Today, May 18, is the 21st anniversary of the first airing of "Last Knight," give or take local syndication.

For several years after, I tried to post a new story, poem, or essay on the anniversary each year, a little show of memory, respect, defiance, and the persistence of our dear FK community. I haven't managed that in quite some time. But this year, at least, we will have [community profile] fkficfest stories start releasing in May, which is the month not only of the "Last Knight" finale in 1996, but of the "Dark Knight" premiere in 1992.

Life, death, hope, despair. History, mystery, philosophy, adventure. Identity, freedom, choice, desire. ♥ FK is so many stories! Still.

Level 40 trainer in my neighborhood gym

There's a Level 40 player in my neighborhood gym. Is she visiting someone? Or spoofing her location? I've never seen her avatar's name here before.

My Princess Blissey — Queen Blissey has slightly higher CP, but a slightly less strong defensive moveset — recently held the top of the neighborhood gym for 7 days in a row. New personal record! Now, after the gym changed teams a few times at the weekend, she's just #5 below the pokemon of several high-level players whose avatar names I don't recognize, including this Level 40 trainer. Whose avatar wears a mask.

Peculiar.

on dramatic and comedic characters

Poking around for storytelling insights to (hopefully!) help my '17 FKFicFest story come out as my recipient might like, this aphorism particularly struck me:

"Dramatic characters are driven mainly by what they want. Comic characters are driven mainly by what they don't want."
— attributed to a Tom Schlesinger, who leads writing workshops

Just thought I'd share. :-) Good luck to everyone imagining, writing, editing!
