Tomorrow will bring the masterlist and the close of the '17 game

All 10 new 2017 [community profile] fkficfest stories are now revealed! Read them on the AO3.

Tomorrow, I'll post the "closing ceremonies" master list of all the stories, and we'll wrap for the year.

If you haven't already, this would be a great time to point your friends and followers to the game! Share the FK love! And of course it's never too late to share a comment or kudos to make an author's day.

FKFicFest '17 rolls on! 5 stories so far

This is our halfway point! We've released 5 stories in this year's [community profile] fkficfest, and we have 5 to go. You can follow the game live on our AO3 collection or from our DW community.

If you read a story, please consider letting the author know! You can leave a comment or click the "Kudos" button. You don't have to have an account or be signed in!

If you haven't had time to read during the workweek, I hope that the weekend brings you time!

FKFicFest 2017 is releasing! (Do update your load date to your release date)

The first story of 2017's [community profile] fkficfest is released!

This particular story went first because it's one of the longest this year, and it seemed good to space out the tales that could take more time to read. It's also one of two sharing another characteristic (shh! spoilers!), which also seemed good to stagger for variety.

It did not go first because it was the first loaded, although it was one of the earlier loads. You can see its original loading date of "2017-05-16" right now. Authors can change those dates when their stories release! I'd encourage authors to consider doing so. I'd suggest that when your story releases, you open it to edit and change the date from when it loaded to when it released. I believe that this boosts your story up to the top of the AO3 lists at that time. It gives your story a better chance to be seen by readers who are casually browsing "recently posted" content on your release day. I will do this for the story I wrote.

Yay, FK writers! Yay, FK beta-readers! Yay, FK readers!

Fully loaded!

All ten 2017 [community profile] fkficfest stories are in our AO3 queue! No pinch-hitters needed!

I'm checking that each looks ship-shape (with a recipient and rating and so on). And I'm drawing up our schedule. The first story will release tomorrow; the last will release June 7.

Looking good! Counting down...

Just thought I'd note that, with an hour to go, 8 of 10 stories are in our [community profile] fkficfest queue on the AO3. Great work, everyone!

I won't be staying up to watch the others roll in. I'll look again on Sunday morning, Pacific Time (after mass, brunch, and my 7-day streak bonuses in PokemonGo ~grin~).

The first story will release on Monday.

LK anniversary

Today, May 18, is the 21st anniversary of the first airing of "Last Knight," give or take local syndication.

For several years after, I tried to post a new story, poem, or essay on the anniversary each year, a little show of memory, respect, defiance, and the persistence of our dear FK community. I haven't managed that in quite some time. But this year, at least, we will have [community profile] fkficfest stories start releasing in May, which is the month not only of the "Last Knight" finale in 1996, but of the "Dark Knight" premiere in 1992.

Life, death, hope, despair. History, mystery, philosophy, adventure. Identity, freedom, choice, desire. ♥ FK is so many stories! Still.

Level 40 trainer in my neighborhood gym

There's a Level 40 player in my neighborhood gym. Is she visiting someone? Or spoofing her location? I've never seen her avatar's name here before.

My Princess Blissey — Queen Blissey has slightly higher CP, but a slightly less strong defensive moveset — recently held the top of the neighborhood gym for 7 days in a row. New personal record! Now, after the gym changed teams a few times at the weekend, she's just #5 below the pokemon of several high-level players whose avatar names I don't recognize, including this Level 40 trainer. Whose avatar wears a mask.

Peculiar.

on dramatic and comedic characters

Poking around for storytelling insights to (hopefully!) help my '17 FKFicFest story come out as my recipient might like, this aphorism particularly struck me:

"Dramatic characters are driven mainly by what they want. Comic characters are driven mainly by what they don't want."
— attributed to a Tom Schlesinger, who leads writing workshops

Just thought I'd share. :-) Good luck to everyone imagining, writing, editing!

Good game, Toronto!

Per Reversal (YouTube episode, ~4 minutes), Toronto currently has more Level 40 players (57!) than any city in the world, and their Pokemon Go community got together to commemorate it. How?

Simultaneously, they maxed out 4 gyms — Mystic/Blue, Valor/Red, Instinct/Yellow — with 10 Level 40 trainers each.

Absolutely awesome.

"loosely based on the TV series of the same name"

It seems that the rumors of a Forever Knight movie in development have been confirmed as true.

If you'd like information or conversation about it, I recommend trying [personal profile] greerwatson, who posted about it on ForKni-L, or [personal profile] melissatreglia, who posted about it on her blog. Source: "CurseBorne Films To Develop Forever Knight Movie" by Mitchell Wells on HorrorSociety.com. And the production company is of course on Facebook.

The hopeful bit, to me, is that although this Nick is planned to be "a freelance detective [who] only takes on cases that deal with the supernatural or occult" (for me, personally, that sounds weak and hollow next to the thematic richness of the reformed killer fighting killing, the one who won't die yet is dead surrounded by true death and true life), nevertheless, and although the production company has previously made only horror, this would be a "departure from strictly horror-based projects" (the FK I love isn't horror).

It took me several minutes to figure out that the giant red "V" in their current project logo probably means to suggest "vampire," which could be disheartening, undermining hopes that they understand that FK is about more than that. It took me less time to identify the serif font; I've actually used it (or one like it) in many FK projects over the years (I'm not the only one).

I'd rather not debate this possible movie just right now, so I've turned off comments. The news feels... a little bit pained, you know? Old injuries. Please forgive any inconvenience. I'm sure there will be plenty of time yet, and future posts.

Would algorithm-matching (Yuletide rules) be better?

Yes, I'm afraid that many of the [community profile] fkficfest matches are challenging this year. I'm truly very sorry. If any players would like a swap, I'll facilitate!

Perhaps we should switch to machine-matching, like Yuletide?

[community profile] fkficfest matches will start emailing as soon as I post this.

I'm sorry; it really did take this long. I went to mass and a movie this weekend, but did almost nothing else besides move "reader" and "writer" slips of paper around for hours on end.

I'm going to sleep on the [community profile] fkficfest matches I've got, in case of further inspiration, and then send them on Sunday. I apologize for the delay!

Addendum, Sunday, 11:26 AM: Still matching. Sorry! Few are easy this year, but I hope they will turn out to be good.

I just caught a shiny!

A shiny magikarp was waiting for me between my apartment and my mailbox when I got home tonight! I wasn't shiny-hunting; I was fetching my snail-mail. It has 70% IVs, but... shiny! (I was so excited that I can't even remember now whether it was shiny (yellow) or normal (orange) on the main screen before I tapped it.* But there is a "shiny" animation to catch your attention once you tap a shiny, in case you don't otherwise recognize the difference.)

I wonder how rare these will turn out to be? In the main-series games, I understand, the red gyarados was the one shiny all but guaranteed to every player. Perhaps we're all meant to encounter one shiny magikarp during this United Nations World Water Day (week) event? Hmmm.

(Oh, yeah, and remember to sign up for [community profile] fkficfest soon. That's important, too. Sure. Of course it is. Shiny shiny shiny... ~grin~)

* Addendum: Mystic7 reports that shininess becomes visible after tapping. Also, shiny spawns, unlike all others, are individual (that is, for only one player each time). Oh, and shiny magikarp can reportedly be non-shiny dittos... cruel tease!

Sign-ups are open until this coming Friday, March 24, at 11:59 PM (how to sign up) (where to sign up). We currently have 7 sign-ups. I expect at least 1 more. I hope to be happily surprised by more than that...?
