brightknightie: A stylized representation of a medieval knight on a horse surrounded by a sun. Blue. (Bright Knight Logo Transparent)

I conceived this fairly light gen piece for the [community profile] fkcommentfic/[livejournal.com profile] fkcommentfic "Bloor Mistletoe Challenge" (open through January 6), but it grew all out of commentfic proportions. I considered bonsai-ing it. However, after very generous betareading from [personal profile] batdina and [livejournal.com profile] pj1228 on New Year's Day itself, I concluded that a short story fit the idea best.

  Rating: G
Characters:  Nick, Schanke, Natalie; cameo by Stonetree; passing mentions of Myra, Jenny, Janette, Lacroix, Norma, Grace, Fleur, Patrice, Dietrich, Lipinski

This is the [livejournal.com profile] fandom_stocking story that I wrote for [personal profile] havocthecat this year.  She said that she likes "stories about women, focusing on their relationships and friendships, and... saving themselves and each other" (and, yes, Forever Knight).  I'm satisfied with the main action of this story, but possibly the tag is unnecessary.  (Boxing Day in Ontario, by the way, resembles Black Friday in the US, thus providing the pre-dawn setting.)

My thanks to [personal profile] skieswideopen for Canada-checking!  My thanks to [personal profile] celli for beta-reading!

Available: My Fansite | The AO3
  Length: 1,773 words
  Date: Fandom Stocking 01/06/12, FKFic-L 01/26/12
  Rating: PG
  Characters:  Janette, Natalie
Summary: Janette and Natalie are among the passengers stuck in a glass-sided mall elevator under a skylight, with dawn on the way.
Quotation: "However the observance had begun, it had evolved into a holiday honoring the hunt — and of the hunt, Janette was a most ardent devotee."

brightknightie: A stylized representation of a medieval knight on a horse surrounded by a sun. Blue. (Bright Knight Logo Transparent)

This is the [livejournal.com profile] fandom_stocking story that I wrote for [livejournal.com profile] amilyn this year.  She said that she likes "strong women," "aftermath," and "fic that... fits into canon" (and, naturally, Forever Knight).  It's a light piece, with a few passing serious reflections.

My thanks to Malinaldarose for her speedy beta-reading!  My thanks to Celli for her precise beta-recommendations!

Available: My Fansite | The AO3
  Length: 1,336 words
  Date: Fandom Stocking 01/06/12, FKFic-L 01/23/12
  Rating: G
  Characters:  Natalie, Sharon
Summary: On her thirty-first birthday, Natalie dyes her hair for the first time.
Quotation: "But what could she say if Nick... envied her?  Worse, what if this change in her pushed him to notice time passing, to see the day coming when department ribbing about his appetite would turn instead to his youth?"

brightknightie: A stylized representation of a medieval knight on a horse surrounded by a sun. Blue. (Bright Knight Logo Transparent)

This is the [livejournal.com profile] fandom_stocking story that I wrote for [personal profile] skieswideopen this year.  She wrote that she likes “outsider POVs,” “slice of life” and “bittersweet endings” (and, of course, Forever Knight).  I'm pretty satisfied with it.  I think it's different, and that it achieves an appropriate structure.

My thanks to [personal profile] celli for her supportive beta-reading and perceptive suggestion!

Available: My Fansite | The AO3
  Length: 1,996 words
  Date: Fandom Stocking 01/07/12, FKFic-L 01/18/12
  Rating: PG
  Characters:  OFC, Janette, Nick, Lacroix
Summary: In 1275 Troyes, Janette's laundress discerns the hidden nature of her household.
Quotation: "She had learned just what combination of wood ashes and caustic soda salvaged a gentleman's tunic soaked in blood, precisely how much fine Spanish hard soap rescued a lady's choicest linen spattered with blood, and the secret technique of restoring furs stiffened by blood."

brightknightie: A stylized representation of a medieval knight on a horse surrounded by a sun. Blue. (Bright Knight Logo Transparent)

These are my half of the "door prize" drabbles (100 words each) written for the on-time players in FKFicFest 2011.  (See the whole slate for eight more by [livejournal.com profile] amilyn. My thanks to her for beta-reading mine, and for writing hers!)  They're assorted, answering a diversity of prompts.

Available: The Ficathon | My Fansite | The AO3
  Length: 8x100 words
  Date: FKFicFest 07/29/11
  Rating: Assorted
Characters:  Nick, Natalie, Lacroix, Janette, Feliks, Reese, Jenny, Jody, Perry

brightknightie: A stylized representation of a medieval knight on a horse surrounded by a sun. Blue. (Bright Knight Logo Transparent)

I wrote "Malicious Mischief" for [personal profile] sholio's prompt in FKFicFest 2011.  This is the one in which a murder at the Raven defies Janette's cover-up skills, Nick is away pursuing the Abarrat, and Schanke and Janette are both quitting smoking.

Thanks to [personal profile] batdina and [personal profile] lastscorpion for beta-reading!  Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] wiliqueen and [personal profile] leela_cat for brainstorming!

Available: The Ficathon | My Fansite | The AO3
  Length: ~9,100 words
  Date: FKFicFest 07/16/11
  Rating: PG
Summary: While Nick is out of town, Schanke and Janette must cooperate to solve a crime at the Raven.
Characters:   Schanke, Janette, Nick, Natalie, Miklos, Alma, Grace
Quotation: "The woman herself was ebony-and-ivory gorgeous as always, pale skin revealed by a black evening dress in all the right places as she leaned back in her chair, shining dark hair twisted up behind her head. But her eyes were tight, and her fingers twitched toward the crystal ashtray that was no longer there."

FK Poem: "Solace"

Yesterday, May 18, 2011, was the fifteenth anniversary of the first broadcast of "Last Knight" (give or take local syndication).  This piece has nothing to do with "Last Knight;" I just like to post something new on that day.  Great thanks to [personal profile] batdina for swift, pointed, encouraging beta-reading, so that I could fulfill that tradition this year!

It had been five years since I last wrote a fan poem.  When this idea arrived, I tried to fit it into story-shape out of habit; it stalled.  When I realized it was a poem, it bloomed.

  Title: "Solace" (also on AO3)
Length: ~300 words (3 stanzas of 10 lines)
  Date: FKFic-L 05/18/11
  Rating: PG
Summary: Different people unwind in different ways after a difficult night.
  Characters:   Natalie, Nick, Schanke, Other
Quotation: "pushes the volume up past memory, / driving out the recent and the distant."

I wrote this story for [livejournal.com profile] pj1228 in the [livejournal.com profile] oldschoolfic winter 2011 event.  (This is the one with the Turkish bath, the blood supplier, and the teenage murder victim.)  Thanks to [personal profile] lastscorpion, [personal profile] skieswideopen and [livejournal.com profile] amilyn for beta-reading!  Thanks to [personal profile] celli and [livejournal.com profile] wiliqueen for brainstorming!

PJ is a Cousin, Dark Knightie and UFer who prefers "dark," so I found this assignment extremely challenging.  I aimed close to canon, hoping to achieve its openness to being read both ways; the crimes solved in this tale are more disturbing than my usual, and some may find them triggering, though all could have aired as written.

•  Title: "Cuts Deep" (also on AO3)
•  Length: ~11,000 words
•  Date: Oldschoolfic 02/02/11, FKFic-L 05/02/11
•  Rating: PG-13
•  Summary: Nick and Schanke solve a vicious murder that reminds Nick of a miscarriage of justice in 1885 London.
•  Characters:   Nick, Schanke, Natalie, Lacroix, Janette, Stonetree, Norma, Others
•  Quotation: "Schanke was right; Nick did know that feeling.  He took a deep breath of the clear spring night.  'We give the families closure, Schank.  And sometimes, with these high profile cases, the whole community needs that closure, too."

brightknightie: At dawn, a white knight raises her lance (Default)

I wrote this vignette for [livejournal.com profile] wiliqueen in the 2010/2011 [livejournal.com profile] fandom_stocking event.  On her wish list, she said that she likes to read "women being awesome," "friendship," "supporting characters," and "irreverent humor... in the face of catastrophe."

•  Title: "The Book Club Auxiliary" (also on AO3)
•  Length: ~1,000 words
•  Date: Fandom Stocking 01/06/11, FKFic-L 03/31/11
•  Rating: G
•  Summary: Grace visits Natalie in the hospital.
•  Characters:   Grace, Natalie, Other
•  Quotation: "Grace read a chapter of the new Weiss novel aloud, and then another, and then put in a bookmark and excused herself for a trip to the washroom while the nurse checked Natalie's vital signs and necessities."

brightknightie: At dawn, a white knight raises her lance (Default)

I wrote this vignette for Andveryginger in the 2010/2011 [livejournal.com profile] fandom_stocking event.  My thanks to Natmerc for beta-reading.

On her wish list, Andverginger wrote that she likes N&N and "mild-to-moderate angst."

•  Title: "Metamorphosis" (also on AO3)
•  Length: ~1,000 words
•  Date: Fandom Stocking 01/06/11, FKFic-L 03/20/11
•  Rating: PG
•  Summary: It's time for Natalie to move on ... without Nick.
•  Characters:   Nick, Natalie
•  Quotation: "He could admit, now, that he had been expecting this almost from the moment she woke up in the hospital, her blood in his veins, a human donor's in hers."
