brightknightie: Schanke in a Hawaiian shirt at the Dolph Inn (Schanke)
The random-number generator determined that "The Code" is the episode to rewatch and chat about, just a little, desultorily and casually, as discussed in my previous post.

Come and play! No pressure. Why not pop "The Code" into the DVD player or stream it? Why not share a thought, memory, question or joke?

The story that I wrote for the 2015 [community profile] fkficfest/[livejournal.com profile] fkficfest released very early in the game. (Thanks to [personal profile] lastscorpion for the lightning beta!) I'd love it if you read it! If you do, please consider letting me know what I should learn from this one to make the next more interesting and satisfying.

First, though, please check out all the other stories! There's something to tempt every FK taste.

On the AO3: "Wake the Morning After
  Length: 14,995 words
  Date: August 2015
  Rating: PG-13
Characters:  Natalie, Nick, Schanke, Urs, Lacroix, Lili; original characters; "off screen" Serena, Feliks, Enforcers
Setting: ~2015; divergent reality; branched from canon in the hiatus between the first and second seasons
Summary: Back in the day, Natalie cured Nick's vampirism; they got married. Two decades later, something has gone terribly wrong.
Quotation: "Yet Nick had never stopped looking over his shoulder, never stopped expecting an ambush by the existence he’d left behind. Nick had told Natalie about many such dangers — his resentful surviving converts; hunters of vampires; cronies of Nick’s deceased “master,” Lacroix; and, first, foremost and always, the Enforcers, who kept the vampires’ secrets."

Reflections on writing this story, with spoilers )

I conceived this fairly light gen piece for the [community profile] fkcommentfic/[livejournal.com profile] fkcommentfic "Bloor Mistletoe Challenge" (open through January 6), but it grew all out of commentfic proportions. I considered bonsai-ing it. However, after very generous betareading from [personal profile] batdina and [livejournal.com profile] pj1228 on New Year's Day itself, I concluded that a short story fit the idea best.

Available: The AO3 | I'll put it on my fansite soon.
  Length: 2,408 words
  Date: FKFic-L and AO3 01/01/13
  Rating: G
Characters:  Nick, Schanke, Natalie; cameo by Stonetree; passing mentions of Myra, Jenny, Janette, Lacroix, Norma, Grace, Fleur, Patrice, Dietrich, Lipinski
Summary: Schanke has Christmas cookies for almost everyone.
Quotation: "I feel lousy resorting to this for my own partner, but— go on, open it."
brightknightie: Nick's caddy parked at his loft ("My Fandom Knows Trunk Space") (Caddy)
[livejournal.com profile] hearts_blood generously wrote my prompt in her "Cuddle/Kiss/Sex" meme, producing a very pleasant gen rumination on Nick's relationship with the Caddy, framed by Schanke interaction, and sporting three (count 'em! three!) mini-flashbacks (two historical, one within canon).  A boy and his car...

I prompted "cuddle, FK, Nick & his car, parking lot."  She replied with "Mementos" (G, gen, ~2K words; Nick, Schanke, Natalie, Sydney, Others) on LJ and AO3.  I appreciate her tackling my off-the-wall suggestion!
brightknightie: Trophy declaring "Bright Knight Recommended" (Recommended)

What's Good?  For March, I am bittersweetly pleased to spotlight Diane E.'s "The Last Vampire" (1995, PG-13, ~5K words) in the recommendation-of-the-month project.  After Diane's death last month, I reread all her FK fanfiction.  While she is justly known for her comedy, this, her one drama, is my own favorite of hers.  This Nick goes public with his vampirism under the pretense that he is the last of his kind; he becomes the sole focus of media attention, scientific scrutiny, back taxes...

The day after his first dinner at Schanke's, the lawsuits started arriving at the precinct. First, from people he'd arrested last week, last month, last year—all suddenly claiming "the vampire" had hypnotized them into confessing to crimes they hadn't committed. Then, every suspect he arrested, even the ones he caught red-handed, filed a police-brutality and wrongful-arrest complaint.

What's New on FKFic-L?  February saw one story: "Diamonds...and a Girl's Best Friend" (1 post, 6KB) by [livejournal.com profile] greerwatson.  In March so far, one story has appeared, and [livejournal.com profile] lisamcdavid has posted an invitation for FKFic-L War proposals.

brightknightie: Nick looking up. (Nick)
This weekend, the radio program Soundprint featured an article, "Sunshine and Darkness," about Xeroderma Pigmentosum.  People with XP, among other challenges, cannot tolerate sunlight.  Within the story of Forever Knight, XP is the most practical, realistic basis for Nick's "sun allergy" cover (we all knew that, I'm sure).

What was new to me was Camp Sundown, a "night camp" offering sun-sensitive children the traditional camp experience, "just on a different time clock."  related FK story concepts )

I think that there is potentially a lot of rich storytelling material there, if anyone might like to take it up.  I might come back to that Schanke idea, myself, someday, but I absolutely do not mean to hog "Camp Sundown" as a font of FK story ideas!  It's available for all.

I wrote "Malicious Mischief" for [personal profile] sholio's prompt in FKFicFest 2011.  This is the one in which a murder at the Raven defies Janette's cover-up skills, Nick is away pursuing the Abarrat, and Schanke and Janette are both quitting smoking.

Thanks to [personal profile] batdina and [personal profile] lastscorpion for beta-reading!  Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] wiliqueen and [personal profile] leela_cat for brainstorming!

Available: The Ficathon | My Fansite | The AO3
  Length: ~9,100 words
  Date: FKFicFest 07/16/11
  Rating: PG
Summary: While Nick is out of town, Schanke and Janette must cooperate to solve a crime at the Raven.
Characters:   Schanke, Janette, Nick, Natalie, Miklos, Alma, Grace
Quotation: "The woman herself was ebony-and-ivory gorgeous as always, pale skin revealed by a black evening dress in all the right places as she leaned back in her chair, shining dark hair twisted up behind her head. But her eyes were tight, and her fingers twitched toward the crystal ashtray that was no longer there."

FK Poem: "Solace"

Yesterday, May 18, 2011, was the fifteenth anniversary of the first broadcast of "Last Knight" (give or take local syndication).  This piece has nothing to do with "Last Knight;" I just like to post something new on that day.  Great thanks to [personal profile] batdina for swift, pointed, encouraging beta-reading, so that I could fulfill that tradition this year!

It had been five years since I last wrote a fan poem.  When this idea arrived, I tried to fit it into story-shape out of habit; it stalled.  When I realized it was a poem, it bloomed.

  Title: "Solace" (also on AO3)
Length: ~300 words (3 stanzas of 10 lines)
  Date: FKFic-L 05/18/11
  Rating: PG
Summary: Different people unwind in different ways after a difficult night.
  Characters:   Natalie, Nick, Schanke, Other
Quotation: "pushes the volume up past memory, / driving out the recent and the distant."

I wrote this story for [livejournal.com profile] pj1228 in the [livejournal.com profile] oldschoolfic winter 2011 event.  (This is the one with the Turkish bath, the blood supplier, and the teenage murder victim.)  Thanks to [personal profile] lastscorpion, [personal profile] skieswideopen and [livejournal.com profile] amilyn for beta-reading!  Thanks to [personal profile] celli and [livejournal.com profile] wiliqueen for brainstorming!

PJ is a Cousin, Dark Knightie and UFer who prefers "dark," so I found this assignment extremely challenging.  I aimed close to canon, hoping to achieve its openness to being read both ways; the crimes solved in this tale are more disturbing than my usual, and some may find them triggering, though all could have aired as written.

•  Title: "Cuts Deep" (also on AO3)
•  Length: ~11,000 words
•  Date: Oldschoolfic 02/02/11, FKFic-L 05/02/11
•  Rating: PG-13
•  Summary: Nick and Schanke solve a vicious murder that reminds Nick of a miscarriage of justice in 1885 London.
•  Characters:   Nick, Schanke, Natalie, Lacroix, Janette, Stonetree, Norma, Others
•  Quotation: "Schanke was right; Nick did know that feeling.  He took a deep breath of the clear spring night.  'We give the families closure, Schank.  And sometimes, with these high profile cases, the whole community needs that closure, too."

brightknightie: Trophy declaring "Bright Knight Recommended" (Recommended)
What's Good?  I'm happy to get to have February's recommendation-of-the-month spotlight "Beyond the Grave" (1996, PG, ~2K words) by [personal profile] lastscorpion.  With a light touch on heavy events, "Beyond the Grave" answers the old "Discovery" challenge: "What would it take for Tracy to discover Nick's vampirism?"  In this case, a near-death experience:
"I mean, even vampires die eventually. They get stuck out in the sun, or stabbed with a stake, or suck on a bad rat..." Tracy's voice trailed off.
"That's true, darlin'. Nobody lives forever, and just being a vampire is no cause for damnation. But choosing to be a vampire is a little bit like choosing to be a psychopath."

What's New on FKFic-L?  One story, "Winter Merriment" (G, ~1K words) by [livejournal.com profile] pj1228, posted to the list in January.  However, four stories have posted in February so far!
