Still reading!

I often go months without cracking open a ForKni-L digest at this end of history, but luckily I'm still in my [community profile] fkficfest/[ profile] fkficfest-season habit of checking, because today a nice person posted in reply to my last fest announcement from two weeks ago: "I know this is coming late. Thanks to ISP issues. But I want to thank all of the [FKFicFest] writers."

So, writers, please add this to your tally of readers who appreciate all you do in keeping Forever Knight vital for us all! You make the difference!

And, everybody, please remember that you can read this year's fest stories, or stories from all fest years, at any time. (Also: it's never too late for feedback.)

Keep on reading...

A nice person on ForKni-L wrote yesterday: "I have to say, I have read 3 of the [FKFicFest] stories so far and all I can say is that I wished each of them were longer. I wanted to read more. Great job as usual [to the writers]."

We're having just a bit of a breather between [community profile] fkficfest/[ profile] fkficfest and [community profile] fkcommentfic/[ profile] fkcommentfic this year. I hope that everyone is able to use the time to read more of this year's stories! (Or all the years' stories!) And maybe share some more reflections or kudos with the authors?

All the players worked very hard, and some really stretched themselves, striving to fulfill prompts that may not have been for their own most preferred characters or scenarios. We had just nine players covering all angles of FK! In big, busy fandoms, it's easy to read only the stories featuring one's own favorites. But at this end of history, here in our smaller, sleepier FK, it means so much to support each other across factions and flavors.

Thank you, everyone who wrote, beta-read and read! Thank you very much!

We're well underway! Are you reading this year's FKFicFest? We've released six impressive new Forever Knight stories, and we have six more stories and one illustration yet to come! Two fanworks per day! Come read and enjoy! Join us on DW ([community profile] fkficfest), LJ ([ profile] fkficfest) or in our collection on the AO3.

(Once the big exchange fest is over, join in the no-commitment "dead-dog party" on [community profile] fkcommentfic/[ profile] fkcommentfic!)

Seriously, friends and fellow fans, the stories released so far this year can genuinely boast new ideas, new twists, new insights! How many other fandoms can make that claim at seventeen years past cancellation? Forever Knight is a rich universe! Come enjoy its bounty! :-)

As announced on the email lists by Lisa McD, the next FKFic-L "War" game begins on Sunday, January 13, 2013. If, like me, you're not playing, you can set your subscription to "-war" to avoid the war posts (unless you take digests, in which case there's no filtering). You can also read along without playing, of course! I would personally suggest holding any non-war fiction posts until February, but of course that's entirely up to each writer.

Now, for December, in Forever Knight, in my corners of social journaling, here's what I spotted:

Ficathons, Fests and Communities

  • [community profile] fandom_stocking will reveal on 01/06. Four people listed FK among their fandoms. Check out the volunteer post for stockings no one has yet stuffed.
  • [community profile] fkcommentfic/[ profile] fkcommentfic has received two entries so far in its "Bloor Mistletoe Challenge," which remains open through 01/06.
  • Yuletide garnered three FK stories this year, one an assigned exchange story, one a "treat," and one in "madness."
  • [personal profile] oxoniensis will hold her 2013 "Porn Battle" game this month, with prompting 01/13-17 and posting 01/20-30.

Meta (Essays, Analysis, Discussion)

  • 12/27: [ profile] twilight2000 recommended "Tainted Draught" (then anonymous; now revealed as Greerwatson's).
  • 12/25: [personal profile] sholio (here) and [personal profile] sharpest_asp (here) both recommended "Rondeau" (then anonymous; now revealed as Tolaska's).
  • 12/19: [ profile] mysticalcat7 announced that she has uploaded the January 1996 forkni-l digests to the forkni-l archive. As you know, that was when SOS-FK began. (As you also know, she purges some name/address information by default, and will kindly purge more by polite request of affected persons.)
  • 12/12: [personal profile] melissatreglia compiled all the FK prompts for the "Porn Battle" games amnesty, and announced the 2013 game dates and changes.
  • 12/05: [personal profile] melissatreglia mentioned posting her "Trains and Winter Rains" ficlet for [community profile] fkcommentfic.

12/15: [ profile] pj1228 shared a video clip and facts about GWD and NB's work in the upcoming 2013 Stratford Festival. Both will perform in Measure for Measure and Mary Stuart.

Chiller will not air FK in January or February. ~sigh~ Remember when FK was the SciFi Channel's idea of a great Valentine's Day marathon?

This morning, [personal profile] greerwatson posted "How to Pick up a Bargain at This Time of Year" as the second entry in the "Bloor Mistletoe Challenge" at [community profile] fkcommentfic/[ profile] fkcommentfic. It stars Schanke, with appearances by Jenny, Nick and Myra, and bristles with Torontonian details. Check it out!

I had hoped to revive the recommendation-of-the-month project this December, with praise for Susan G.'s inimitable, chilling, beautiful "Angel Crossing," the sole Lacroix story in the original (1993) fkfic-l Christmas challenge, in which Susan pledged one story per character by her, as long as someone else first posted another story starring that character... and yet no one else wrote one featuring Lacroix. Hers stood alone. And stands alone, unique and stunning. With the other challenge entries, Val K. (not Wiliqueen; the other Val) published "Angel Crossing" in the remarkable Forever Net Before Christmas zine, which is my personal favorite hard-copy zine to this day, as fond as I am of several others. I have not yet managed to revive the recommendations project on my fansite as hoped, so please take this as an informal rec! And if you're looking for more FK Christmastide, please check out my "trope:holidays" tag (DW, LJ) for past recommendations of stories relating to all the red-letter days in the calendar, and especially annual posts (like this one!) chatting about and/or listing links to FK Christmas stories (2011, 2010, 2009, 2007).

I have today and tomorrow off work, and while there are other observances afoot, I also hope to write a very short story for the [community profile] fkcommentfic/[ profile] fkcommentfic "Bloor Mistletoe Challenge." If I am so lucky as to finish it, I'll come looking for a beta-reader to help speed-polish. Forewarned is forearmed... ~grin~ (Now, the challenge stays open through January 6! I would just like to produce something for the big feast day itself, even if all readers will be over at Yuletide.)

Merry Christmas, to all those celebrating! Goodwill to everyone else, too! :-)

Fly-by mention: The first response to the [community profile] fkcommentfic/[ profile] fkcommentfic 2012 winter challenge has arrived! On Dreamwidth: "Trains and Winter Rains" by [personal profile] melissatreglia (178 words, PG). I think that it's N&N, myself, but it's pronouns-only, so alternative interpretations are ... not impossible.

The [community profile] fkcommentfic/[ profile] fkcommentfic 2012 winter game is open. Everyone is invited! As the challenge is based on current events in real-life Toronto, hopefully the scenario will be fun and flexible for FK fans of every faction and tradition.

The idea comes from [personal profile] skieswideopen's description of the "21 kissing stations" recently installed between Bathurst and Spadina. (Each "station" suspends a red-ribboned bunch of fake mistletoe from a tinsel-bedecked lamp over a white circle with red text: "Mistletoe Kissing Station Approved by the Bloor Annex BIA [Business Improvement Association].") So, the challenge: Picture this real initiative in FK's fictional Toronto!

As the venerable custom of kissing under the mistletoe collides with cheerfully kitschy commercialism in a culture not famous for rampant public displays of affection, the commentfic story possibilities range widely. What do the Raven or CERK staffs think about BIAs? Is someone murdered under the mistletoe? Is it the last place someone is seen? Does it inspire a flashback? Does it attract shoppers? Is it charming or irritating? And — of course! — does a couple kiss... or avoid kissing?

To let us know, come play. ;-)

I've been largely offline for fannish purposes for much of September; I hope to be around more in October, and wholly back to normal in November.  Nevertheless, for September, in Forever Knight, in my corners of social journaling, here's what I saw before I wandered away, plus what I found tonight when I came around again (and if I missed something, please let me know):

Ficathons, Fests and Communities

  • Yuletide nominations are open. Please consider nominating Forever Knight (and coordinating your characters with others).
  • [ profile] fkcommentfic accepted fills through 9/30, with 147 total comments (prompts, fills and feedback)!
  • [ profile] het_reccers is running a "het pairing cage match." By current rules, FK will never appear in the game, and they've never yet had a single FK rec in their community, but... maybe someday? We're an awfully het-rich fandom, for goodness' sake!
  • FK does not qualify for [ profile] smallfandombang, because, apparently, it has more than ~2K total stories online. Um. Yay, us?

Meta (Essays, Analysis, Discussion)

Actors: 9/29: [ profile] greerwatson began relating her Stratford Shakespeare Festival adventures.

Airings: Chiller will next air FK on Friday 11/23 (6AM-5PM, DK-FIHS).

When I play in a ficathon, I usually post a list of recommendations as soon as I finish reading and commenting.  I feel that I ought not do that as a mod, though — trumpeting my personal preferences for some stories over my genuine gratitude for each and every story — so I haven't for [community profile] fkficfest/[ profile] fkficfest.  However, perhaps I can help point some readers toward the stories that will appeal to their personal preferences?  We had thirteen stories this year, and here is one way of sorting them:

Like history?  "Phases of the Moon" (PG-13, ~7K; Seline, Lacroix, Divia) by Greer is set in Rome and Pompeii in the two years immediately preceding the eruption of Vesuvius, with flashbacks further into Seline's past.  "We'll Always Have New Orleans" (G, ~1K; Janette, Nick) by Mayhavefakedit is set one-third during Prohibition and two-thirds at the end of second season, as Janette decides to move on.  "Chante à Nouveau" (PG-13, ~10K; Urs, Lacroix, Fleur, Nick, Vachon) by me is set half in 1239 (in what is today southern France) and half in mid-third season.

Like humor?  "Circumstances Unforeseen" (PG, ~5K; Natalie, Nick, Lacroix) by Amilyn strands an angsty vampire, an intoxicated vampire, a coroner and a pregnant lady in an elevator in the CN Tower.  "Tinkers to Evers to Chances to Play" (PG, ~5K; Nick, Janette, Schanke, Natalie, Lacroix, Cohen) by Twilight2000 continually interrupts Nick and Janette's attempts to get romantic.  "Mandatory Training" (G, ~2K; Nick, Schanke, Natalie) by Natmerc supplies a classic first-season tag scene.

Like mystery?  In "The Ties That Bind" (PG, ~4K; Nick, Fleur, Tracy, Lacroix) by Melissa, Nick and Tracy follow a serial murderer from Toronto to Montreal.  In "Renovation" (G, ~2K; Nick, Natalie, Lacroix) by WaltD, Nick's contractors find a dead body hidden in the loft.  In "Not in My City" (PG, ~4K; Nick, Natalie, Vachon, Tracy) by Deire, Nick, Vachon and Tracy work together to bring down a threat to humans and vampires.  In "Some Friendly Advice" (G, ~1K; Stonetree, Cohen), Stonetree tries to tell Cohen something she doesn't quite grasp.

Like adventure?  "Knight Down" (PG-13, ~12K; Nick, Natalie, Reese, Tracy) by Foxy crashes in the mountains in the south-eastern US.  "Buttered Noodles" (PG, ~2K; Janette, Natalie, Nick) by Coralysendria holds up a store at gunpoint.  "Generations" (PG-13, ~12K; Nick, Natalie, Lacroix, Tracy) by PJ1228 converts Natalie to vampirism, with nothing about the change coming easily.

Like drabbles?  There are party favor drabbles for all on-time players, and then also the [ profile] fkcommentfic "after party" as well.
