Yes, my other/older/current DVD player just refuses to play the German discs and spits them back out, as you'd expect (I once tried to hack it only for the German FK, but Panasonic is highly hack-resistant).
This one, though, got caught in some sort of cycle, in which it would not acknowledge any buttons, and instead endlessly toggled back and forth between displaying the error message and trying to play the DVD -- it wouldn't power down, eject, stop, pause, menu, anything. (I of course unplugged it, but replugging it in just started the cycle again.) It was a discard from a school, so doubtless well-worn before it came to me.
>"Uh, hurray for an excuse to buy new equipment?"
In the fullness of time, absolutely! :-) (Have to learn whether I have to move again this year before buying anything substantive, I think... although, one could make the argument that a new TV twice the size of my current one would weigh much less, and a blu-ray player would be smaller than... ~grin~)
For the moment, hurray for having the older equipment safe and accessible in my overstuffed closet! :-)
