I think updating the date to the release date is a brilliant idea. I've noticed that when one goes to the ficfest group on AO3, only the 5 or so stories which were posted at the lastest are displayed unless one clicks on “all stories“. So people who drop by during the fest won't necessarily see newly released stories if they are earlier in the feed.
