Cold case as a shelved police case for lack of developments is the first one that comes to mind, and given the historical aspect of the show it could be a really old case, something from Nick's former life. Something like the Jack the Ripper case comes to mind, but it could be any historical crime that remains unsolved, and it could incorporate Nick's flashbacks like in the show, and maybe parallels a current case.
