The optional tags are being used to help provide more info to your assignee about your preferences and also to help the mods make more granular decisions about matching, should they need to.

The tags will not be expressly used for matching, though. You are also limited to the tags that are already in the AO3 tagset, so any information that you feel is important should also be included in your signup.
