Yes, a lot of issues with media and what gets released does often simply boil down to rights issues. IP law is a huge thing to be dealt with when it comes to this stuff. That's not to say the alternatives aren't also true, and this film was made at a time when there may have been concerns about subtext (if they picked it up).
