I am 100% positive that the original elevator pitch for what became Thunderbolts* was: "Suicide Squad, but Marvel." (I was personally pleased and surprised by how much "but Marvel" it was. I was afraid it would be too much DCEU for me.)
This is the strongest movie the MCU has put out since Guardians III. The executives seem to have managed to mostly keep their notes to themselves and let the creative folks put characters forward of spectacle. They might even have finished writing the script before they began filming, which has not been their way for a while. It's not perfect in every way, but it's fully good. I'm still thinking about its theme two days later.
