Pokemon Go news & rumors this week so far

Wow! So much activity...
  • News: Alolan forms of Kanto pokemon are coming in the next several weeks. Speculation: Likely only Alolan Golem will be very meta-relevant, but Alolan Exeggutor will be funny, and I personally want an Alolan Ninetales (fairy/ice) to be my glass-cannon dragon-killer.

  • News: June's Community Day will feature Larvitar! Rumor: The exclusive move will be the first quick move so featured, specifically the rock-type quick move that Tyranitar needs to become the all-around top rock-type in the game. Speculation: The shinies don't really interest me this time (unlike awesome "charcoal" Charizard), but any gym-battler or raider will want at least one with the double-rock moveset for battling the legendary birds most of all, and also all flying types and ice types in general.

  • Rumor: The next Pokemon games are coming to the Nintendo Switch, titled "Let's Go Pikachu" and "Let's Go Eevee." They'll have some sort of Pokemon Go integration, some sort of accessory that works with both platforms, and will in some way adopt the Pokemon Go catching mechanic.

And if you haven't noticed, Ho-Oh is back and can be shiny! Latias and Latios are still around, on their respective sides of the globe, but it seems no one wants to raid them anymore. On Monday after work, my only raid shot that day, I experienced a group literally walk away from a Latias hatch because they couldn't be bothered with a non-shiny. They did invite me to join them in Ho-Oh hunting! But it looks like it will be tougher than ever to muster a group until the Regis come.

Charmander Community Day

It's May's Community Day* in Pokemon Go! Catch a shiny Charmander and evolve it to shiny Charizard with Blast Burn! Triple catch stardust and extended lures, 11 AM to 2 PM Pacific Time.

Blast Burn will apparently make Charizard the best non-legendary fire-user. It reportedly doesn't lift Charizard above any legendaries after all, though many expected that.

It's been a while since I've posted about Pokemon Go. To catch up:
  • I love the research mechanic! In-game research is the best. "Yes, Professor, I'd love to help you investigate powerful pokemon!" (And yes, I have my Mew, and look forward to Celebi in due time.)

  • During the most recent double-XP event, I reached Level 40, the highest available. I was delighted to no longer think about XP at all! (But then the head of Niantic said that a level-cap raise is coming, so, oh well.)

  • I've received 2 EX passes that I've had to let go, because the raids were during the workday. ~sigh~ But I have 3 total Mewtwos, one with great IVs, so I'm doing just fine. Nevertheless, I'm one of those who thinks the EX raid system bombed. If Niantic must add another pokemon to it, I feel that it should be Deoxys. But I'd rather have research and one-per-player distributions all around.
* The monthly Community Days alternate between Saturdays and Sundays. Unpredictably, but so far 50/50.

Pokémon GO documentary-style trailer narrated by Stephen Fry

I've watched this one-minute video threefour times since it premiered earlier this week. It's still making me smile. Yep, this is pretty much the world I'm imagining when I play the game...

(Some are speculating that it could be a Superbowl commercial, or an excerpt from one. I doubt it; companies don't pre-tease Superbowl commercials, do they?)

First "Community Day" in Pokémon Go

Today is the first monthly "Community Day" mini-event in Pokémon Go. In the Americas, it's from 11 AM to 2 PM (Pacific Time) / 2 PM to 5 PM (Eastern Time). Goodies:
  • Double XP
  • 3-hour lures
  • Increased Pikachu spawns everywhere (but most of all in parks)
  • Increased Pikachu shiny rate
  • Pikachu can learn the exclusive quick move "Surf" (Pichu and Raichu can't)
And if you participate in the Silph Road's new "Traveler's Card" program, you may be able to find a local event where Discord Admins or other local leaders and coordinators will be giving out badges.

Have fun!

Why to feed berries in Pokémon Go

At a Kyogre raid recently, I met a couple of people who hadn't yet learned the side benefits of feeding berries at pokégyms! Just in case, let me spread the good word. In addition to filling a pokémon's strength meter, keeping that pokémon in that gym, and keeping the gym your team's color (for increased resources for you each time you spin or raid there), you'll want to feed berries to pokémon in your team's gyms in order to:
  • Get 20 stardust per fed berry
  • Get 20 XP per fed berry
  • At ~1-in-100 odds, get 1 of the fed pokemon's candy in exchange for a fed berry
  • Incrementally raise your medal at that gym (higher medals yield more resources per spin, and higher chances for EX raid invitations)
Because of the 1-in-100 candy-back reward, I actually have candy for pokémon not yet in my 'dex, like Kangaskhan. :-) It's also an incentive to put rare pokémon in gyms, so that you can feed them berries and win their candy. Lately, I keep putting my Kirlia in gyms, for more Ralts candy to power up my Gardevoir (unless I really need to help hold the gym for my team, in which case it's always Blissey or Chansey, of course).

fun tiny thing lost in unfun big news

When Norway's Prime Minister visited Washington D.C. last week, a news photographer "caught" her putting one of her pokémon in the White House gym. (Sources: Comicbook.com, NintendoSoup, Daily Mirror, etc.) This wasn't the first time she'd been thus "caught" taking a break between meetings with the game; in 2016, she told the media she'd reached Level 14 (no word on her current level).

I, at least, was utterly charmed. I hope that she caught an amazing Tauros while she was over here. ♥

Subsequent EX raid adventures

I have my Mewtwo! 80% IVs.

The last time that I posted about Pokemon GO, I told you that my first EX raid pass went sadly wrong (see that post), with only 3 trainers and 1 spoofer showing up. Not nearly enough to tackle Mewtwo (though we tried!). This was back when EX raids were still in beta, before Niantic added consolation prizes of premium raid passes and stardust for canceled EX raids. We walked away with nothing but disappointment. I'd simply been unlucky enough to be invited to a "how low can we go?" test.

Since then, I've received 2 — 2! — EX raid passes, including to the surprising Christmas Day raids. These subsequent 2 passes arrived so close together that I got the second before I used the first, and when I attended the first of these 2 EX raids, I caught my Mewtwo on the first ball. These highly unusual circumstances made me suspect that my account could perhaps have been on a "make it up to the player" list after that initial debacle.

more about these EX raids )

Now, even powered-up, Mewtwo is far from unstoppable. Type counters and weather boosts matter! But I do love soloing Machamp raid bosses with Mewtwo leading my team. I'm building up to a Gardevoir to join Mewtwo in that mission; beating fighting types with fairies is my favorite. :-D

Failed EX raid (not enough people came)

I'm a disappointed pokémon trainer tonight.

A week and a day ago, I was excited to receive my first EX pass for a raid to take place today. Formerly called "Exclusive," these "EX" passes invite players to come test a new game feature at a specific time and place, with a group of other players, for the expected reward of an opportunity to catch a supreme legendary monster (Mewtwo!). These EX raids have been happening in waves around the world for a few months now.

I looked forward to the event all week, put it on my calendar, powered up my best counters, wore my team-color sweater and jacket...

Now, I had worried that no one had chimed in when I posted the raid to my local Discord group. Or the neighboring group. Or all the groups in the region. But, hey, not everyone uses Discord! Surely regular players would just show up at the park without organizing?

Nope.

Only three of us came for the raid in person: me, another woman, and a boy with his mom. A fourth spoofed in from a distance (cheating). When the raid clock dwindled, the others let me convince them to try, for the sake of the experience, even knowing that we couldn't win with so few (they were understandably reluctant to incur the cost of the resources to heal up from an impossible contest). And we couldn't. We didn't. But we tried! We played well! We battled Mewtwo down under a quarter strength! But we were just too few.

Discovering the lower bound is part of the game testing. Of course. But it's disappointing to be the guinea pig at this end.

I wonder whether we'll get another EX pass someday.

(BTW, when you battle Mewtwo but don't win? It doesn't register as "seen" in your pokédex.)

gold ghost-type medal

I've achieved the gold medal for ghost types! I was really close before the Halloween event started yesterday. Now, of all the type medals, only dragon remains for me. (I'm far away from even silver in dragon types. And I'm okay with that! I like the challenges.)

I've also already wild-caught 4 of the 5 Gen 3 ghost types released for the event. Um. That seems awfully soon! (The Dustskull evolution Dustclops appeared in my living room. Was I to not catch it? Silly!) The event will last 2 weeks.

I suppose that the real quest must be for a shiny Sable Eye, as that's the sole shiny in the event. (So far, I have 3 shinies in the Magikarp family, and no shinies in the Pikachu family. I'm nervous that I'm going to fail to recognize the sunburned-Pikachu-look shiny, should I ever come across it, especially if my phone's night mode tinting is on at the time. I've been advised to watch the ear-tips. Apparently, they're gray on the Pikachu shinies.)

Entei beaten by 4 (including me)

Yesterday, I managed to take down an Entei raid boss with just 3 other trainers! It was second teams all around, by pretty high-level players, and close even so, but we beat a legendary with only 4 people!

Entei has 3 vulnerabilities, of course: water, rock, ground. But ground is too slow. When you're hard against the clock, go with rock and water for sheer damage-per-second.

Solo'd a Level 3 raid

Like most adults, I don't get to raid often during the work week, and less and less as oncoming autumn contracts the days (raids start sunrise to sunset only, it seems). But I am making more of an effort to spend my free daily raid passes to keep my Mewtwo options open since that mechanic was announced. Even if only on a Level 1 or 2 raid by myself before work, at lunchtime, or a really quick afternoon break, whenever I'm lucky enough to have (and notice) a raid pop nearby, I check my schedule.

On one of the 3 raids I managed to complete this work week, I dared a Level 3 alone. And I did it! I met my longstanding game goal of taking down a Level 3 raid boss by myself! It was close. And it was just an Arcanine with pure fire moves (no bite, crunch, or wild charge). But still! I solo'd a Level 3 raid boss! It took 4 pokemon: my 3 leveled-up Golemns with 2 rock-type moves each, and my biggest, best Vaporean. (Obviously, wild charge would've destroyed my Vaporean.) Shiny Gyarados with hydro-pump was my anchor, in the sixth slot, but we didn't get to her.

Previously, I'd tried soloing Arcanine and Flareon bosses with ground types (which are common around here). I've concluded that the ground-type moves will never be fast enough to solo them, not at any level.

Surprise Mewtwo and Articuno overshadow perfect Zapdos

There's an Articuno raid at the park nearest me right now. What's happening? Is Articuno back, or is this a glitch...?

I'd planned to post briefly this morning to share that I was so very lucky as to catch a 100% IV Zapdos yesterday! Yay! And then I was going to say that I actually hope summer legendary season will end tonight; I'm game-exhausted by these limited-time-only availabilities of the legendary birds. And then I was going to comment on the rampant Ho-Oh speculation. But...

Apparently, Mewtwo has been a raid boss at Pikachu Outbreak! People have caught Mewtwo! And clearly there's this Articuno right now, here, when we all thought that Articuno wouldn't be seen again in the game for many months, if not a year, if not ever.

Why does Niantic do these things on Mondays (work days) instead of weekends?

If all the legendaries are back in the game at high availabilities, I may perhaps feel a little ill-used or tricked for having invested time and effort in catching them while we were told they were limited-time-only. Hmmmm.

Addendum 10:56 PM: Niantic has spoken: Mewtwo and "other powerful pokémon" are coming soon to "Exclusive Raids," and all 4 legendary birds are back through the end of August. Read all about it.

How to keep Blissey off your raid squads

Do you get tired of the game auto-recommending your high-CP Blisseys and Chanseys for raids? What you really want, of course, are pokémon with the type advantages to deal the most damage per second, thus getting you more rewards, and your team more premier balls! For that, I learned this great tip at a raid yesterday, and will try it at the first opportunity:

To keep the game from default-suggesting certain pokémon, assign them as gym defenders, let them faint, and then don't revive them until you want to use them on purpose. The game won't recommend fainted 'mon!

(Blissey, with her unmatched endurance, is the best defender by far! But she's often a marginal attacker. She's slow and lacks super-effective same-type attack bonuses. So it's not considered best form to raid with Blissey/Chansey-heavy squads. It kind of suggests that either you don't know about type advantages, or you expect to be carried by the other trainers' expenditures of effort, revives, and potions.) (I'm so embarrassed when I don't have time to pick all my squad — because of connectivity, lag, app restarting, players already in the lobby, whatever — and the game default sticks me with a wall of pink.)

the game meta can change at any moment (and just did)

After the gym rework, I posted that 3K+ CP pokémon would lose motivation 10 times faster than >3K CP pokémon.

That was true until this weekend. Turns out, it was a bug! All gym defenders were meant to lose motivation at the same rate. Niantic has released an out-of-sequence update (this was a migration week, not an update week) and it's bursting with bug fixes.

Just thought you'd want to know. It's safe to go back to defending gyms with 3K+ CP pokémon. :-)

I caught my first legendary! Articuno!

I was at my desk at work at 7:30 PM when the Discord app chat pinged. There was a legendary raid across the street from my home. Was I coming? You bet! How fast did I turn off my work computer and dash to my car? How far did I push up against the speed limit?

I'd been on 4 previous legendary raids: 1 Articuno (flying/ice), 3 Lugia (flying/psychic). The first was on Saturday night (as previously related), and the others on Sunday (one in the park across the street from my church after mass, one near my home in the afternoon, and one not far from my work in the evening). Each time, those gathered had beaten the raid boss together! Each time, my individual post-raid legendary had fled.

This time, I was down to 3 premier balls when a fellow trainer started helpfully offering advice. I was a little grumpy with him, I'm afraid. (That is not the moment a trainer wants to reconsider her ball-throwing style.)

With my second-to-last premier ball, the Articuno stayed in! 96% IVs. Front breath & Blizzard. I am very lucky!

I understand that Niantic announced this afternoon that Articuno will be around for only a week, at which time Moltres will get a week, and then Zapdos. Lugia will apparently stick around permanently, but get less common...? We shall see. One of each would be perfect! :-D

(Oh, and the bonuses are extended until 5 PM Pacific on Thursday!)

my Lugia raid adventure

I'd walked down the block for a simple little Weezing raid (Level 2) before dinner, to wrap up my GoFest day. I'd done my bit to help during each global challenge window; I'd heard about the problems in Grant Park (poor connectivity, server overload, long lines, etc.); and I was wondering when the bonuses would turn on.

I bumped into a fellow trainer who lives across the street. We beat Weezing together, naturally, and discovered that we work for the same (very large) company. She started to add me to an internal company pokemon group that I hadn't known of... and we saw posts about a Lugia raid boss (Level 5) hatching within the past 15 minutes, 10 minutes drive away!

(BTW, the bonuses have gone live and will stay so until 5:00 PM Pacific on Monday. Double stardust, XP, candy, spawns.)

Now, wasn't I going to do something about dinner...?

participating in GoFest outside Grant Park

Fellow pokémon trainers! As you know, Saturday is GoFest. And GoFest is not only for the lucky few in Grant Park in Chicago. We around the world will also play our parts in releasing the legendaries!

Per Niantic, those in Grant Park can unlock rewards (like double stardust) for everyone globally, while we outside can extend the length of these rewards (like for more days). If we all — inside and outside — win our challenges, then the mystery challenge will unlock. Everyone believes that the mystery challenge is legendary raid bosses! The only question is which.

(Golem with 2 rock moves is the go-to counter for all the legendary birds, as Tyranitar with 2 dark moves is for Mew and MewTwo. If you don't have those, try Omastar and Houndoom, or Sudowoodo and Gengar.)

During the worldwide challenge windows, if you can, go out and catch! Every capture counts. Check your time zone on GoHub. In Pacific Time, the windows are:
  • Challenge #1  9:00 AM to 9:30 AM
  • Challenge #2 11:00 AM to 11:30 AM
  • Challenge #3  1:00 PM to 1:30 PM
Have fun!

most important gym rework fact

Update 30 July 2017: This was a bug. All pokemon now lose motivation at the same rate. Read my post about the change. Or read the original post below:

Fellow pokémon trainers! Just in case you haven't heard or figured this out yet: in the recently renovated gym system, the motivation of 3000 CP and higher pokémon degrades 10 times faster than that of 2999 CP and lower pokémon as gym defenders. (As widely reported, the APK mines show ~10% CP loss per hour for 3K and up, versus ~1.1% for under 3K CP.)

It's not that your teammates are feeding berries only to the weaker pokémon, as I initially wondered, myself. It's that the stronger pokémon are 10 times hungrier.

While at first this felt like nothing but a vile nerfing of our best defenders, I now see two ways it can be useful. First, in the new gym defender prize system, a trainer receives 1 coin for every 10 minutes defended, up to 50 pokécoins per day, received when the pokémon returns home. So if your goal is to maximize your pokécoins to spend (rather than your time-in-gym for your gym badge bonuses), you may want your pokémons' motivation to degrade faster, so that they will return to you promptly with those coins! Second, if your goal is precious, precious stardust, then a hungry 3K+ CP pokémon in a handy gym could give you more total opportunities to redeem berries at 20 stardust per berry.

Level 40 trainer in my neighborhood gym

There's a Level 40 player in my neighborhood gym. Is she visiting someone? Or spoofing her location? I've never seen her avatar's name here before.

My Princess Blissey — Queen Blissey has slightly higher CP, but a slightly less strong defensive moveset — recently held the top of the neighborhood gym for 7 days in a row. New personal record! Now, after the gym changed teams a few times at the weekend, she's just #5 below the pokemon of several high-level players whose avatar names I don't recognize, including this Level 40 trainer. Whose avatar wears a mask.

Peculiar.

Good game, Toronto!

Per Reversal (YouTube episode, ~4 minutes), Toronto currently has more Level 40 players (57!) than any city in the world, and their Pokemon Go community got together to commemorate it. How?

Simultaneously, they maxed out 4 gyms — Mystic/Blue, Valor/Red, Instinct/Yellow — with 10 Level 40 trainers each.

Absolutely awesome.
