You're right that it may be a definitional conflict! In the '90s, I first learned "gen" as meaning "everything except erotica" (regardless of het or slash; and we didn't yet use the term "het"!). That may have been an FK-specific experience: the FKFic-L email list and FTP archive for what was then called "gen," on the one hand, and the JADFE group for erotica, on the other.
