Starter evolutions (New Year's event follow-up)
I did my starter evolutions after the New Year's event ended (with a lucky egg on for those "added to pokédex" XP bonuses!). As mentioned, I had enough candies to evolve and keep one each of every stage of all three starters, plus double enough for venusaur (grass types have always been common here). I'd been storing up my starter candies ever since I started playing, and keeping three of each starter, swapping out the lowest IVs each time I caught or hatched a new one, so...
Bulbasaur family:
I now have two great venusaurs, both with excellent IVs and excellent movesets. The one with 93% IVs learned vine whip/solar beam (venusaur's very best attacking moveset), and the one with 91% learned vine whip/petal blizzard (second best attacking). I'm very happy with them! Yet of course it would have been even nicer if the second one had learned a defending moveset.
My 91% ivysaur learned vine whip/solar beam like his biggest brother, which is outstanding.
My 87% bulbasaur knows tackle/sludge bomb, which will not lead to greatness in gyms, but that's perfectly all right.
(Venusaur ranks somewhere around seventh among all possible defenders according to Game Press and Trainer Tips, and is the best grass-type attacker. He can do the eighth most damage per second.)
Charmander family:
My charizard is just the tiniest little thing at only 240 CP (and XS size!). I evolved her because she had 98% IVs and I was willing to buddy-walk the power-up candies forever if she learned a great moveset, but unfortunately she came down with ember/fire blast (charizard's fourth best moveset on both sides). I'll use her for training up friendly gyms (attackers half or less the strength of defenders raise prestige fastest).
My charmeleon is much stronger than her big sister at 833 CP (89% IVs)!
My 93% IVs charmander (468 CP), I'll definitely evolve in pursuit of a better moveset... someday, when I have the candies.
(Charizard is first among flying-type attackers since the rebalancing, edging out Pidgeot, and third among fire-type attackers. She doesn't rank as a defender at all, though, I'm afraid.)
Squirtle family:
My 93% IVs blastoise (1291 CP) doesn't benefit from Same Type Attack Bonus (STAB) at all, weighed down by bite/ice beam (the fifth moveset on both sides). I suppose that if I put him in gyms, at least his moves will take other trainers off guard! No one expects dark and ice from blastoise?
My 51% IVs wartortle (449 CP) at least learned the excellent water gun/hydropump moveset.
And my cute little 89% squirtle (444 CP) knows bubble/aqua jet.
Perhaps surprisingly, blastoise doesn't rank as a defender, and is only sixth among water-type attackers since the rebalancing. So while I was initially a little disappointed with my squirtle-family results — countering my spectacular bulbasaur-family results, I know! — I'm very content on reflection. All I need them to do is fill their pokédex slots, and so they are! :-)
How went the PokéGo New Year's event for you?
