Brightknightie's 2024 Fanfic Year-in-Review

In 2024, I posted 6 fanworks (4 stories, 2 poems). The work that earned the most hits got 127 (fewest 19). Most kudos 15 (fewest 1). Most comment threads 12 (fewest 1). As usual, exchanges and events earned the most interaction of all kinds by leaps and bounds -- which is surely one reason we love exchanges and events!

(Curiously -- and I did not know this until I glanced at the Statistics tab to make this post; I have no idea where to actually view these, if anywhere -- two of this year's pieces each earned one "subscription." Apparently some kind folks want to be there if those pieces spawn series, which is super neat... but super puzzling in the case of the short poem? I loved writing the poem! But it's not exactly sequel-etic.)

"Found in the Fog" (T, gen, ~5K words)
Forever Knight: As a lighthouse keeper in 1890s California, Nick fights a deadly fog and wrestles with the epiphany that cost Sylvaine's life.

"The Map in Adarbrent Manor" (G, m/f, ~10K words)
Dungeons & Dragons (Cartoon): A special map promises a way home, if our gang can get to it in time. Sheila feels the weight of change. And Eric decides that he has to tell Sheila how he feels before it’s too late.

"Beyond Illusion" (G, gen, ~4K words)
Dungeons & Dragons (Cartoon): After escaping Venger’s Forbidden Tower, Varla must decide whether to stay with her parents, join Presto and his companions, or forge her own place in the Realm.

"Garbage and Flowers" (T, gen, ~5K words)
Highlander: The Series: Gregor, having started a new life, drops by Alec Hill’s house to make amends. But Alec is dead and Richie is the one who killed him.

"The Secrets He Holds" [poem] (G, gen, 192 words)
The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess / The Legend of Zelda: The Ocarina of Time: The Golden Wolf need not understand the Hero's Shade; the Hero's Shade understands the Golden Wolf.

"However Briefly" [poem] (G, gen; 657 words)
The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess: As Zelda and Link escort Midna to her departure, Zelda thinks on what they’ve been through and knows what Midna will choose.

Many, many thanks to everyone who read this year! Extra thanks to those who commented! And profound thanks to those who brainstormed, beta-read, and otherwise helped me do better by the folks who read (and by the characters we love)!

Fanfic year-in-review (2023)

I posted 7 fanfic stories this past year, which is more than I've posted in a single year since 2011. And 4 of them were "just because" stories, not for an event or exchange. I'm feeling very happy with both of those statistics! I hope to do as much or more, as well or better, this year, circumstances permitting.

Link list of stories )

Some of the stories I'm personally happiest with from this year include: "Allow Me To Demonstrate" (BSG78) for helping me earn a deeper understanding and appreciation of the Sheba character, and for contributing an angle I feel is rare in the currently available fandom fic. Similarly with "So the Heart May Become the Eye" (D&DC) for the same with the Terri character, plus exploring evergreen unresolved canon questions. And I'm also -- though very differently -- happy with "By Zoom or Skype or Google Meet" (D&DC); this is just a deep-cut long-post-canon id-fic of our heroes all being okay at a dark time, and may, frankly, be unreadable outside that context, but it made me feel okay, too, while I was writing it, and I'm grateful. ♥

My fanfic year-in-review 2022

Now that [community profile] hlh_shortcuts has de-anonymized, I can share my 2022 fanfic year-in-review list:

  • June: Forever Knight: "Amaranth (love-lies-bleeding)" in the FKFicFest challenge (M, m/f, ~5K words) (12 kudos, 8 comment threads)

  • August: Battlestar Galactica (1978): "Conjunction" for Sharpest_asp in the Every Woman exchange (G, gen, ~2K words) (6 kudos, 2 comment threads)

  • December: Highlander: "Would you leave" for Argentum_ls in the HLH_Shorcuts exchange (G, gen, 3K words) (28 kudos, 8 comment threads)

I'd planned to post more stories in 2022. But the Retro TV exchange didn't happen. And I didn't manage to complete anything not event-driven.

Ruminations and looking forward )

2021 Fanfiction year-in-review

Now that HLH_Shortcuts has revealed, I'd like to share my list of stories posted in '21. Five is more in a single year than I've completed in a very long time. Part of that may be the renewed availability of compatible exchanges! Part may be longing to be more involved with all of you.

I seem to have been into missing scenes this past year:

  • FK: "Bright with Anticipation" (G, gen, 550 words) (April)
Just because. Self-indulgent happy Easter canon-divergence starring Father Rochefort (from "For I Have Sinned"), with Nick, Schanke, and Natalie.

  • FK: "Say Otherwise" (T, gen, ~3K words) (May)
FKFicFest. Missing scene to fill and reinterpret some of the most egregious holes in "Trophy Girl," starring Tracy, with her mom, Reese, and Nick.

  • FK: "For the Living" (G, gen, ~2K words) (July)
Every Woman Exchange. Canon-compliant workday with Natalie's team, off-screen inside "Cherry Blossoms," starring Natalie, with Grace and Eddie.

  • BSG78: "The Field Trip" (G, gen, ~5K words) (September)
Retro TV Exchange. Near-post-canon mild adventure with some introspection, angst, and sibling issues, starring Apollo, with Athena, Starbuck, Cassiopeia, and a little Boxey.

  • HL: "Legend Has It" (G, gen, ~3K words) (December)
HLH_Shortcuts. One missing scene and two rewritten scenes. Mainly a conversation between Darius and Richie immediately after "Band of Brothers," but also a fix-it for "Archangel" with Methos, Duncan, and Joe, because: because.

Unposted, I did draft and fool with a pile of assorted tiny snippets, some maybe worth polishing up and expanding, most definitely not. And I started that rare-pair D&DC story and got ... checking ... 1,117 typed words into it, plus some handwritten notes. I would definitely like to finish and share that this year.

Thank you for coming along for the ride!

2020 Fanfic Year in Review (belated)

Because the HL fest reveals got pushed, I never made a 2020 fanfic year-in-review post in the season for them. May I do one now? I posted more total stories last year than I've posted in a single year in a long time. Perhaps I can do more, and better, this year.

January 2020
"A New Year’s Resolution"
Dungeons & Dragons (the '80s cartoon). 100 words. General, gen.
Present-day Eric feels melancholy and musters resolve.

April 2020
"Still Breathing"
Forever Knight. 4,169 words. Teen, gen.
Nick takes on a forgotten cold case and a new humanity therapy, while Schanke leads a project preparing for the reassignment of the homicide squad.

July 2020
"Still Burns"
Pokémon GO. 1,120 words. General, gen.
Just before the first Team GO Rocket invasion, Candela and Charmander go to train at the Ponyta field.

December 2020
"The Power That’s Inside (We All Live in a Pokémon World)"
Highlander / Pokémon - All Media Types. 6,876 words. Teen, gen.
Duncan knew that Methos had a hustle as a Pokémon GO influencer on social media. But there was so much more he didn’t know. And every game needs a champion.

I'd never noticed the AO3's "Statistics" tab until I picked up on it from [personal profile] senmut. I learned that my most viewed story ever, by leaps and bounds, is my one BSG78 story. I had no idea (it's earned 7 kudos in 6 years, so who could have guessed?). Anyway, if you've never looked at your AO3 "Statistics," you might find them interesting. :-)

And I do still owe several fanfic "gift certificate" fulfillments from years past (list). Sorry!!!

2016 Fanfiction Year-in-Review

I wrote only three stories in 2016, I'm afraid:

[community profile] myoldfandom 2016 Exchange: "The Wand of Siora the Wise"
beta by Skieswideopen; for DesertVixen
(Dungeons & Dragons (1983-85); ~9K words; G; Sheila, Eric, Hank, Bobby, Diana, Presto, etc.)

This was my first writing in this lifelong-loved fandom. I tried so hard to fulfill the prompt and be episode-like that I may have overdone it. Yet I learned about the characters as you do only when you're writing them, and found much delight in them and their universe! I want to write them again, and read them more.

[community profile] fkficfest 2016 Exchange: "The Time Will Come"
beta by Batdina; for Merfilly
(Forever Knight; ~3K words; G; Janette, Alma, Aristotle, the Enforcers)

Late summer and all fall are lost to me in a haze of overwork. I don't recall just how this concept found me, only that it felt important to stake FK's claim on an open future. I learned more about Canadian security than the story needed, not to mention Syrian brutality. But the story, I think, I hope, is finally full of hope and determination — first-season-style, today.

[livejournal.com profile] hlh_shortcuts 2016 Exchange: "Ships in the Night"
betas by Skieswideopen, Celli & Sholio; sounding-board-ing by ArgentumLS & Skieswideopen; for Idontlikegravy
(Highlander; ~1K words; G; Richie, Michelle, Angie)

I almost didn't sign up for this fest. And then I almost dropped out. HLdom often seems to me as monolithic as FKdom is diverse; I worried and fussed. The kind people listed above helped me through. I do love HL dearly, for all that I'm lost in HLdom. I hope that I did right by it and by the other players, and maybe they won't mind me playing again someday.

2011 Fanfiction Year-in-Review

In 2011, I finalized 10 fanfiction pieces (~36K words).  I also have 2 lingering "leftover" stories (~2K words), which I posted as commentfic for Fandom Stocking 2010/11, but still have not yet polished for the list or archived; they're not abandoned, just... not yet satisfying.  8 of the 10 are Forever Knight, 1 Highlander, and 1 Young Blades.  9 (prose) were written for fests, and 1 (poem) just because.  They're all pretty much gen, as I measure it, though there are splashes of canon romance.

I also archived all my fanfiction on the AO3 this year, re-editing most pieces as I went. A big job! I still have to transfer the changes back into the originals on my fansite.

My thanks to my 2011 beta-readers! ♥ Batdina, Skieswideopen, LastScorpion, Amilyn, Ithildyn, Natmerc, Sholio and Celli. Plus Wiliqueen and Leela for brainstorming.

2010 Fanfiction Year-in-Review

In 2010, I posted six fanfiction stories (~23,500 words).  Three were Forever Knight, two Highlander, and one Harry Potter.  Three were written for ficathon prompts, two as gifts, and one just because.  They're all gen, in the old-fashioned way I think, but in today's terms, I suppose one is het, one is "pre-slash," and one has het and femmeslash.

My thanks to my beta-readers!  Batdina, Wiliqueen, Amilyn, Celli, Havocthecat, Natmerc and Eeyore9990.

2009 Fanfiction Year-in-Review

This year, I posted seven total fanfiction stories (~40,200 words).  One was in Highlander, three in Forever Knight, and three in the Buffyverse.  Six were for ficathon prompts, and one was just because.  They're all gen, in the old-fashioned way I usually think about classifications, but in more contemporary terms, I suppose three are gen, three are het, and one is het and femmeslash.

2008 Fanfiction Round-up Meme

It doesn't look like much next to the breathtaking productivity of some fanfiction authors who have shared this meme, but my 2008 was unprecedently prolific.  This was also the year I discovered ficathons.  (I suspect a connection, oh yes.   How did Bill Watterson have Calvin and Hobbes put it?  "I work best under pressure." / "You work only under pressure.")

2008 is the last year for which [livejournal.com profile] tv_elf will appear in beta credits.  I miss her.  I am grateful to her and [livejournal.com profile] much_madness, [livejournal.com profile] batdina, [livejournal.com profile] leela_cat, [livejournal.com profile] wiliqueen, [livejournal.com profile] abby82, and a few people from the list, who generously gave their time and thought to make my stories worth reading -- and, in many cases, to midwife them into existence in the first place by asking questions and waiting out the answers.

And I am so grateful to everyone who read the stories -- especially those who told me they did. :-)
