FK Fanfiction Recommendations Project
If you would like to share any feedback on my FK fanfiction recommendation-of-the-month project (1999-present), or -- yes, please! -- suggest other FK fanfiction for me to read and recommend, please leave a comment here.
The recommendation-of-the-month project strives to pass on the favor I received when I was a newbie, of directions to specific excellent authors and noteworthy stories among all the bewildering forest of offerings available (even back then, when there was so much less than now). I try to spotlight thought-provoking, instructive, engaging stories, both old and new, all across the wide spectrum of FK interpretations (although I rarely recommend anything with NC-17 content; perhaps that's a project someone else could take up?).
Each story is recommended with explicit permission of the author. Period. No exceptions. There are stories I'd like to recommend, but whose authors I've been unable to reach, or who have very politely declined to have their fanfiction featured; that's just fine. I want the project to salute these authors, for whose work we are so grateful; they should get to choose their own honors.
The project also hopes -- what wild optimism! ;-) -- to help inspire the writing of wonderful new FK fanfiction from time to time, by pointing readers to authors, and reminding us all of what we love in FK. Fanfiction is a conversation; please speak up!
If you would like to leave a comment on one of the recommended stories, you are very welcome to do that here, as well, and I will notify the story's author of the feedback. However, most of the authors have generously shared email addresses with their recommendations, so you can email them directly, if you have email access. Please do reward authors with your feedback! In an out-of-production fandom like FK, we are each other's only sources of new encouragement, the only spark of interpretive tensions. Your thoughts on someone's story may inspire her to write another!

I for one am greatly appreciative of all the work you've done at compiling this list of recommendations. I stumbled back into FK fandom a little under a year ago after a decade long absence and the only fic resource I could remember from my brief flirtation with FK online was Mel's fic site. It's a wonderful resource but I found myself basically picking stories at random and hoping that they were what I was looking for. When I found Nancy Kaminski's site it was a relief because her collection of stories and authors kept me busy for a while but it only left me thirsty for more FK fic. I can't quite remember how I ended up in you site but I was completely floored not only by the sheer number of fics that you had recommended over the years but that you were still updating! Your site, from the fic recommendations, to your stories, the essays and your meticulous lists are an absolute must for all FK fans. I've been meaning to drop you an email in appreciation and I'm glad I can finally get this out. Thank you!

I know I never intended to write FK fic. When I returned to the FK fold it was to seek out the stories to satisfy my need for more of everything. I'd marathoned through my new season DVDs and I fell in love with this show all over again. So I when I found myself jotting down bits of character conversations, scenarios, or expanding on throwaway lines from fic that I'd read I wondered where everything was going. Every time I re-read one of my favorite FK stories (many of which I discovered through your site) I'm reminded of the amazing quality of the writers that have written FK fic. It's certainly something to aspire to.

I agree wholeheartedly with this statement. It's important to keep the dialogue alive and I think the recent discussion on forkni-l about where all the principle characters would be now after 'Last Knight' is a good example of that. I really hadn't thought a whole lot about doing my own post-Last Knight story but someone's comments about what they would have liked to have seen has really caught my interest. I guess I'll have to let it percolate and see if it goes anywhere.

Comparing your LJ with my backlogged fkfic-l inbox, I see that you've posted two stories there this year, which I have not yet read, but will surely get to eventually. (I'm perpetually backlogged on my fanfiction reading, I'm afraid; but I like to think this is good, as me catching all the way up would probably be a sign of FK's final doom. ~g~) So in the meantime, thank you for posting to fkfic-l, and good luck writing more! I will let you know when I've read some of it.

Another "recommendations" site you might like to try, if you have not yet, is Bonnie P.'s "Screed Was Here (http://screed.blackraptor.net/fanfic/)." It focuses on stories starring the third-season characters (though of course the other characters are present, too) and its proprietor invites stories that meet her high standards.

Twelve a year doesn't seem like many, but approaching nine years, I guess it does mount up! Thank you for noticing. This year's December recommendation went up just before midnight on the first.

There is always room for more post-LK stories. I hope that yours ignites!
There was a period when it seemed that every story on the list was grappling with LK -- and that was back when we had more stories in a day than we get now in a month. Goodness knows, I've played in that sandbox my fair share. Yet I think it's something the fandom will always return to, and rightly so. I've barely been skimming that particular thread in the forkni-l digests personally, but I hope that this round of discussing LK will energize people and spark fresh ideas (sometimes in the past the subject has made everyone unhappy or angry instead).
Good luck with your story possibility!
