FK Recommendation February 2009

What's good?  I'm pleased to get to feature "The Night Was Dark, and She Was the Owner" by Elisabeth as February's recommendation-of-the-month.  This ficlet crosses over with Highlander, but requires no HL knowledge to enjoy its full FK potential.

       "Buy the lady a drink?"
       The question, asked in the patois of her childhood by a vaguely familiar voice, triggered Janette's protective instincts. Even as she swung around, she clamped down on her body's impulse to flash fangs.
       Elbows resting on the wrought iron fence that separated the café tables from the pavement, he smiled at her. That nose, those eyes, that horrendous hair. He could be only one man. Methos, her memory supplied, along with a string of other, temporary, names.

What's new?  In January, fkfic-l saw three stories finish posting, including the one that began in December.  (As a reminder, the line-limit doubled during January.  Post-count for story-length will be a whole new metric going forward.)

Hey! I found two FK fics! Of course, I immediately thought "I have to go and tell [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com] right away!" :)

They're both by [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com]. I'm rather gleeful, and will probably be posting nearly the same thing on my journal as I'm commenting on here. :) They're Natalie/Janette, but both are certainly readable as friendship only, if that's what you'd rather. (And knowing you, I'm sure you'd rather. *g*) ETA: Actually, the first one is Natalie/Janette, the second one is friendship only. Oops!

The first, Unfinished Business, is a post-series Natalie and Janette friendship fic, with Natalie as a vampire, and the premise of how Natalie has changed is both heartbreaking and realistic. (The ones that have her coming to terms with it before more than a few decades have passed have me blinking a few times.) I think the author didn't know Vachon's fate in AtA, or maybe she ignored it. It was always unclear anyway, and I like to think he dug himself up after a short period of time.

The other, Hiding Out at the Raven, is a human Natalie and vampire Janette fic, and presumes that Natalie is hiding at The Raven much like Schanke did. It's a nice vignette that feels like a case that was dealt with by the characters between the episodes. Janette's occasional exasperation when Natalie calls her on one of her self-delusions (because Janette is so the vampire den mother of Toronto) is especially delightful to read.

On Nanette? Yes, you're right, but in the end, as long as there's a sincere attempt at keeping the characters like themselves, I'm not going to quibble at where they end up romantically. Mostly. (Okay, okay, but my standard couple-faction quibbles totally fall under the rubric of "keeping the characters like themselves." ~g~)

I used to read a lot more Vachon fiction, when I was close to a Vaq, and it seems to me that they always buried him with blood and then dug him up, except in the very rare cases of a pure Tracy mourning story.

I wrote the digging-up scenario myself once, but I left him in the ground for several years first! :-)

Oh, I love interlude stories! They are my favorite fanfiction structure to read! Thank you.

"Me? No. Non. Don't be absurd. I have no nurturing instincts. What you're suggesting is insulting! Just because I shelter the new converts and protect them, shelter prostitutes and protect them, give free cover to sad -- I mean, pretty -- young girls with old souls, protect Natalie from her own foolishness (to a point), give the Raven into Lacroix's care to ensure a haven remains for the lost, and we won't even touch on the subject of eight centuries of Nicolas... no, I am just not the mothering type."
