Multi-Fandom "Women are Awesome" Ficathon

[7:18 PM: Now crossposted to forkni-l.]

Natpacker [livejournal.com profile] havocthecat is one of the moderators running the new [livejournal.com profile] femme_fic LiveJournal community, which they are inaugurating with a multi-fandom "women are awesome" ficathon -- that is, centering on the female characters in a positive manner, whether the story be gen or romance or whatever.  (A "ficathon," by the way, is a lot like a fiction list challenge, except 1) there is a hard deadline, 2) there is no kick-off/sample story by the challenger, and 3) you submit multiple prompts of your own, and you receive multiple prompts submitted by your fellow writers, so you pick one to write from those you're given, and someone else picks one to write from those you give, so you "get a story in return" for the one you write.)

Unfortunately, FK is not one of the official fandoms for the ficathon (they held a vote; we didn't win).  So although there is a "wildcard" slot for unlisted fandoms like FK, there's no telling whether you'll really get the opportunity to write FK.  Of course, the more who sign up with FK as their wildcard, the better the FK odds ... which is why I'm posting here, of course!  :-)  If anyone wants to play in this ficathon, please consider bestowing your wildcard slot on FK?

I haven't signed up.  Yet.  I'm thinking about it.  Of course our FK female characters are among the most awesome anywhere.  FK blows most other series entirely out of the water on that score.  It's not just Natalie and Janette and Tracy, or Cohen and Urs and Grace, or Marian and Emily and Denise, or Fleur and Erica and Mai, but just about every female character canon ever sent our way!  FK can pride itself on strong, idiosyncratic, well-rounded female characters.  (And I believe the stories can be posted to fkfic-l after the ficathon is over, or I wouldn't even be considering it.  All FK fic should come home to fkfic-l!)

But ... it is a multi-fandom game, not an FK game, and I'm definitely hesitating over that, personally.  Also, I've never done a ficathon before.  And the most recent story I've written is out for beta-reading...  We'll see.  But I wanted to share the opportunity to play with all of you; they're taking sign-ups through January 30.

(By the way, for those unfamiliar with LiveJournal, you don't have to have an account to read there, or to post replies.  Some ficathon moderators require you to have an account to submit stories, but others don't and will take them by email; this community doesn't seem to say, so we could certainly ask, if that turns out to be relevant to someone.)

Anyway, just a thought.  After that wonderful flurry of fiction on fkfic-l in late December, I haven't seen anything posted in January yet, and I generally support anything that might spark more FK stories for us all.  :-)

I think this is such a great idea. Unfortunately I know next to nothing about any of their official fandoms so I'm really not qualified to enter.

Hopefully that won't keep people from contemplating story ideas for the women of FK. The women of the Raven are ripe with possibilities as are ladies like Erica and Serena. I know I'm positively giddy about perhaps a story centered around a fledgling Alyce Hunter. ::grin::

I think challenges or ficathons are such a great way to get the creative juices flowing. Every time I see an FK prompt on a livejournal fic challenge I feel compelled to enter. It makes me sad to think that they'll go unclaimed. The main thing is to get new FK fic out there and hey challenges have succeeded in getting me to write four new FK stories. Are they all going to be fantastic? No, but they do get me to flex my underused writing muscles.

Also, [livejournal.com profile] fk_fanfiction posted a 30 minute challenge a few weeks back. I guess time will tell if people will produce anything for it.

This statement was a small curiosity to me, because they include all the Treks, and also Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I suppose I just took it for granted that those were a common currency of fandom ... but of course the years are passing fast. And while I'm familiar with most of their official fandoms, I must admit that none of my own best beloved made it.

I've signed up for the ficathon now, and it will be my first. I hope it will be fun, and that we'll see a couple of FK stories out of it, at least. :-)
