More thoughts on 90s-channel-tv-exchange

Thank you, everyone, for explaining the nominations and matching for 90s_channel_tv_exchange! I've played only a couple of AO3-matched games (never Yuletide) and was confused.

I'm thinking about what the 90s_channel_tv_exchange timeline and participation means for fkficfest. As the new fest is due May 21, should we come due in mid to late April? Early May? Mid-to-late June? Or will overlap with the new exchange fest just use up everyone's time, energy, and interest for the year? (Easter is April 9, and Passover April 5-13, this year.) I'll get the survey up soon.

I'm pondering whether to sign up for the new exchange myself. Peruse their tagset so far. Obviously, FK and HL. (Some of the FK noms so far remind me of the risks of exchanges in dearly opinionated fandoms. I just don't do pro-evil or pro-vampirism.) Beyond them, many to read, few to write?

TL;DR: If you have a short '90s canon you think I'd enjoy writing, whether I've forgotten it or never yet met it, pitch it to me?

My other dearest TV shows hit outside the '90s bounds. Within those bounds, there's nothing but FK and HL that I feel immediately confident that I could do, for sure, to my own joy and a reader's satisfaction. Most of the canons are quite long and I haven't reviewed them in, well, decades.

I used to always offer AtS and BtVS, but it's been a long time, I'm further than ever from the characters, and we're all much less happy with anything near Mr. Whedon. Is it even okay to go there any more?

I used to sometimes offer Sailor Moon, but I originally watched and read it in the '90s, so I know the characters best by their English names and their adapted versions. That's not how it's done anymore! And the canon, of course, is so much more sprawling. It's been a long time.

I do love Rurouni Kenshin, Doctor Quinn: Medicine Woman, original Quantum Leap, TNG, DS9, Darkwing Duck, Monarch of the Glen, and Ballykissangel, and own many of them on DVD, but have not rewatched them all the way straight through ever, and not more than the odd holiday or favorite episode in many years, and some of them are very long canons. I couldn't fully re-ingest and re-process the whole canons in time.

The original Beauty and the Beast? It's been a long while, but... hmmm. Do I still have anything to say about it, does it still have anything to say to me...?

I'm still only early in Earth: Final Conflict. I could finish watching canon in time, but it would be wildly imprudent to offer to write a show I haven't even finished the second season of.

Someone has nominated MST3K, but only wants the Mike years. No. Similarly, someone has nominated Twin Peaks, but only 'ships. No.

I could rewatch Jeeves and Wooster in time, but I'm not actually a fan of the show, nice as it is -- I'm a fan of the original books by Wodehouse.

I somehow completely missed ever seeing Zorro (1990) aka The New Zorro, for all that I love that IP in general so much. Must not have aired where I was. Ah, syndication days!

I can't stop loving Buffy, even though Joss is trash. I try to remember that when I get judge-y at people who are still into Harry Potter, despite JKR.

Yes, you're right. Every story is more than its author. And especially a TV series is not only the author and the audience in on the creation, but all the many, many people who contributed it.

Me, I am suffering from "exchange exhaustion" and currently writing only for ficathons and promptfests that are not exchanges...but the theme of this exchange really tempts me....

Yes, '90s TV theme! Whether or not I write for this new exchange, I will enthusiastically read in it! I really enjoyed its predecessor exchange games, like MyOldFandom and a couple of others, but those did stretch far enough beyond the '90s, one direction or the other, that I always had more to offer.

I thought about participating in the 90's channel TV exchange, but I have almost the same problems as you do. There are some shows from the 90's i love(d), but do I still know them well enough to write fics in these fandoms... Apart from Buffy, I doubt it.
And even though Whedon is yuck, I still do love Buffy, and why should I ditch an amazing show? The actors did absolutely amazing, and I think it shows appreciation still watching it or writing fics in this fandom. Same goes for HP (F*** JKR!).
I also love TNG, Voyager, Darkwing Duck and Dr. Quinn, (and other 90's shows) but since I've never watched them in English, and it's been a few decades... I think I'll pass on this exchange and only do FKFicFest. Writing has been quite hard for me lately due to writer's block and personal stuff, so I don't want to feel stressed when writing, so I'll concentrate on my fave fandom.

Yes, both exchange games and challenge games have their own fun and their own risks, and the "forcing" function of an exchange can go either way, depending on the circumstances.

I haven't decided for myself yet about writing in this new exchange, but I look forward to reading many of its stories, for sure.

My early year is sewn up, what with candyheartsex due early next month, and worldbuilding_exchange coming due 11th March. That will give me plenty of time to write for 90s_channel_tv_exchange, since it's due 21 May; but there's no way I can easily fit in something in between. For me, late June would be best. I await your survey, of course; but that's what I'll be answering.

As for possible fandoms: are all yours American (aside from FK)? Because there are quite a few British shows that are eligible: Sharpe, Midsomer Murders, Poirot, Miss Marple, Prime Suspect, Cadfael, All Creatures Great and Small, Dalziel and Pascoe, Rumpole of the Bailey, Inspector Morse....

It's lovely that you've found so many games to play this year!

I find myself wishing I could have a year's calendar of events to plan through. Yes, now that I know this new exchange is run by a person who helps run Yuletide, it has crossed my mind whether it eventually spells the end of fkficfest, whether our little game should just merge into the large one.

Yes, Ballykissangel (and, I was going to say, also Monarch of the Glen, but I just double-checked; MotG premiered in '00, not '99 as I'd misremembered; darn). And I'm fond of Red Dwarf, though I'd never fanfic it. I'm afraid I've never actually followed the shows you mentioned, though of course, yes, some did come to PBS, and I've read the books several are based on, and watched their sequels/prequels and remakes! They just aired before the era in which I regularly watched Sunday-night PBS; I was more a Saturday-night PBS girl then, where my local channel put the Doctor Who reruns, and Blackadder reruns, and Japanese anime. :-)

I've drafted the survey now. I'll plan to post the survey on Monday, if all goes well. We could elect the prompts sooner and have a later due date, if people who aren't playing other fests would enjoy starting sooner.

As an amusing side note, I noticed in the crossover section someone nominated Wesley Crusher & Methos. That is an interesting cross.

That is indeed an interesting HL & Trek cross. When the time comes, I would be interested to see the "Dear author" letter that goes with it.

I have not decided about playing. I really don't have a third fanfic-writing fandom in this decade, though I will happily read fanfic in many, many of the nominated-so-far fandoms.

I haven't decided on whether to sign up for this. I suspect it would require significant canon review, and I don't know how much time I'll have.

If you're still looking for possible canons, there's an anon thread here listing some, including short ones that can be consumed quickly. Perhaps you'll be inspired?

Apparently, the A&E Pride and Prejudice is eligible as a mini-series, though in my head it's a single 6-hour-long movie. Though I don't understand how fanfic of it would differ from fanfic of Austen's original book, as, except for the famous shirt!pond scene, it's pretty rigorously canonical (and that, along with its fantastic acting, is why I love it).

I've drawn up a TXT file of nominations I could make, but I truly don't know whether I'd rather sign up for this, or keep playing with just-because stuff, like the Pokemon GO piece.
