Snowflake Challenge '26 #1 (Icebreaker)

[community profile] snowflake_challenge: Icebreaker: "Introduce yourself. Tell us why you're doing the challenge, and what you hope to gain from it."

I'm Brightknightie, a middle-aged fan who loves Dreamwidth and wishes we could all spend more time playing fandom with each other here. I've updated my Dreamwidth profile. I won't repeat here those profile points of who I am fannishly; most of you here know them already.

I will say that the fandoms that I'd most love to discuss these days are The Legend of Zelda (all incarnations) and Dungeons & Dragons (cartoon, 1983-85), and those are what I expect I'm most likely to write fic for this year, myself, give or take exchanges. I'm hoping for a solid year in the MCU; we shall see. I occasionally post about comics; I'm looking forward to the inaugural Thundarr the Barbarian run launching soon. I lost my Journey to the West touchstones when I left Twitter and still miss that; it's too bad they don't do Dreamwidth. I'm happy to reply about Trek, Who, HL, FK, B5, Buffyverse, Pokémon, Robotech, Sailor Moon, Ruroni Kenshin, Zorro; the works of Lois McMaster Bujold, Sherry Thomas, Rex Stout, Alexandre Dumas, Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, Wilkie Collins; and many, many more; I'm not highly likely to post about them myself.

For most of its run, this journal was specifically about Forever Knight (FK); that's changed. I've been bringing more diverse subjects to it in recent years and it is now generically fannish. I rarely post about real life -- this is my fannish space -- but I think most here know that I have a full-time job, fence (foil and rapier-and-dagger), and am Catholic (please don't leap to conclusions; ask if you want to know).

Why am I doing the snowflake challenge? I'd like to help support the vitality of our Dreamwidth community! I hope to engage and be engaged with more here all year round. I'd love to find more folks who want to chat about The Legend of Zelda and Dungeons & Dragons (cartoon), of course! And I'd love to find more new and missed and discovered fannish things to delight in with you. ♥

>> I'm Brightknightie, a middle-aged fan who loves Dreamwidth and wishes we could all spend more time playing fandom with each other here. <<

I'm with you on that! You might like Fannish 50 or Full Content on Dreamwidth over at [community profile] goals_on_dw. [community profile] allbingo hosts a new fest each month. January is Public Domain Day Bingo. The 2026 Community Calendar is up if you want to see future fests or volunteer to host one in your favorite fandom(s).

>> Dungeons & Dragons (cartoon, 1983-85) <<

I loved that too. :D

>>I'm looking forward to the inaugural Thundarr the Barbarian run launching soon <<

Hadn't heard about the comic, but loved the cartoon -- truly one of the best science fantasy cartoons.

>> I'm happy to reply about Trek, Who, HL, FK, B5, Buffyverse, Pokémon, Robotech, Sailor Moon, Ruroni Kenshin, Zorro; the works of Lois McMaster Bujold, Sherry Thomas, Rex Stout, Alexandre Dumas, Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, Wilkie Collins; and many, many more; I'm not highly likely to post about them myself.<<

We have some overlap. :D I don't post a high amount of fannish content, but I do occasionally. However! Fannish prompts are okay in the Poetry Fishbowl or Creative Jam because I can use those as freebies.

Yay!

>> fence (foil and rapier-and-dagger), <<

That is awesome. :D

Consider joining [community profile] newcomers. It's meant to help folks learn how DW works and where to find things they'll like here. Having some experienced folks to answer questions and make recommendations is very helpful.

Thank you so much for boosting the signal!

>> Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves promotional burst. Sadly, those comics didn't live up to the source material <<

I quite liked the movie though. They had me at "black dragon breathing acid."

>>Yes, agreed, Honor Among Thieves is excellent and delightful! It's very much too bad that the movie studio misunderstood how to promote it and to whom, and then dumped the concept of a series because this one didn't make as much money as they'd wanted. It made lots of money! Just not enough... <<

Today most people want to make money instead of entertainment, and it shows. >_<

>> I read only the ones based on D&DC'83, which seem to have been farmed out to a lower-level publisher whose team clearly didn't understand why the cartoon is beloved ... <<

Alas.

The best adaptation I've seen is actually a car commercial from Brazil. It absolutely nails the tone.

>> which I'm restraining myself from going on and on about. ;-)

That's what fandom is for -- to squee about what we love. Snowflake is running, now's a great time for that. Or you could do it for [community profile] marchmetamatterschallenge. I've done several fanifestos for that.

>> Yes, that commercial is magnificent and a touchstone! ♥ I'd heard of it but not seen it until just a couple of years ago. I hope that YouTube has made it possible for everyone who loved the show worldwide to experience that commercial.<<

Sooth.

My superhero setting of Terramagne has that version as a TV show. Also Firefly Season Six. *envy* It's the one world where I keep getting distracted from a plot because someone has the TV on. I have actually written out some of their commercials, and descriptions of several shows.

>> As you probably know, the show was a huge hit in Brazil a decade or so after its original US run, creating a "second-generation fandom" of sorts,<<

I've heard that.

>> which I found really intriguing to follow on DeviantArt (before genAI ruined DeviantArt). <<

Hell, it's ruining everything. It's gotten into the educational parts of YouTube that used to be reliable. First it was the cover images -- if those are false, it's hard to tell which videos to watch. But then I was enjoying a video about the paleontology of pterodactyls, and I saw one image with its wings crossed like arms, another with multiple wing-fingers like bats. >_< So what the hell use is it if they're full of errors?

>>My fannish generation was/is text-based, and our successors were visual-art-based, and their successors seem to be video-based. We'll see what comes next!<<

It's good to see the torch carried.

I'm currently playing a Sheikah rogue in a Legend of Zelda-inspired D&D campaign! We're in the downfall timeline and just beat our first big boss - it looks like our DM is setting up a Twilight Princess-inspired arc for later down the line and we're all super excited about it.

I hope we get to, too! It would be really fun. For us, anyway - likely traumatic for a few of our characters XD

Honestly my favourite thing Twilight Princess gave us was Midna. I love her so much.
