FK Recommendation February 2010
What's Good? For February, I am excited to finally get to recommend
leela_cat's novel "Broken Promises" (1996, NC-17)! My recommendations project's rules require that I get the author's permission before spotlighting a story; I first asked after this one in '00. "Broken Promises" links Nick and Vachon's pasts to produce fully-integrated present-day action. Many minor canonical characters turn up along the way, including the rarely-seen Larry Merlin.

"Damn it, Javier!" Laine began to retort, but stopped when she heard footsteps coming up the stairs. Just great. Now she'd never persuade Javier. She glared at the vampire who entered the attic. What's New? In January, fkfic-l saw three new stories by three authors.
"Vachon..." Nick's voice faltered as he caught sight of Vachon's guest. "Who...?" Doubt, hope, denial. All of them were visible on his face. "I know you. Don't I?"

Recapping List Posts vs Blog Posts
Oh, those aren't word counts! :-) Sorry for the confusion. "KB" for "kilobytes" is how we used to track story size in email-list days, and since the listed stories are from the email list, it's still the easiest way for me to describe them. (I've only switched over to word counts for myself since I began doing ficathons.) Fkfic-l's tradition for identifying story length is post numbers in the subject line, plus file size by part in one's inbox.
I should explain.
- In these monthly "Recommendation" posts, when I list "What's New?" from the previous month, it's really "What's New on fkfic-l?" I'll rewrite that line next time around.
- Separately, my monthly-or-so "Recently" posts recap what's happened on my LJ f-list and DW reading page.
There may well be a better way to organize such things. ~shrug~ The "Recommendation" posts come out of a project I've been doing monthly since 1999, so in case of conflict, they win. :-) The "Recently" posts go back only a year or so.I will list "A Shared Bottle" on my next "Recently" post, because it comes from blogs only, and didn't post on the email list.
For me, the email lists -- forkni-l and fkfic-l -- are still the heart of FK fandom. Even when I'm not reading them regularly, I'm so happy that they're still alive! Their endurance comforts me. And fkfic-l also offers the biggest FK audience still assembled; 260 subscribers received my last story, bless them. If you're interested in joining, Don has the sign-up steps here; the list rules repost weekly on Sundays, and I also have them in a past post somewhere around here, under the forkni-l tag.

I should have lurked more on your journal to catch that flow!
