I just caught a shiny!

A shiny magikarp was waiting for me between my apartment and my mailbox when I got home tonight! I wasn't shiny-hunting; I was fetching my snail-mail. It has 70% IVs, but... shiny! (I was so excited that I can't even remember now whether it was shiny (yellow) or normal (orange) on the main screen before I tapped it.* But there is a "shiny" animation to catch your attention once you tap a shiny, in case you don't otherwise recognize the difference.)

I wonder how rare these will turn out to be? In the main-series games, I understand, the red gyarados was the one shiny all but guaranteed to every player. Perhaps we're all meant to encounter one shiny magikarp during this United Nations World Water Day (week) event? Hmmm.

(Oh, yeah, and remember to sign up for [community profile] fkficfest soon. That's important, too. Sure. Of course it is. Shiny shiny shiny... ~grin~)

* Addendum: Mystic7 reports that shininess becomes visible after tapping. Also, shiny spawns, unlike all others, are individual (that is, for only one player each time). Oh, and shiny magikarp can reportedly be non-shiny dittos... cruel tease!

Achilles heel for Blissey idea

Idea: Blisseys should decline to battle the babies or wounded pokémon! This would be in-universe in-character, would help enormously with the newly blissey-clogged gyms in urban areas, and wouldn't be a nerf if it's been there, undiscovered, since Gen 2 released last Thursday.

(Not gonna happen. But it would be neat.)

My poor, nerfed lapras

I understand that ongoing games require periodic rebalancing to remain competitive. Yet it felt like adding insult to injury when I hatched a new lapras (10K egg) shortly after realizing that my pet powered-up lapras had been nerfed in the latest rebalancing.

Lapras had been the most elegant of the high-powered pokémon: pretty, useful, intelligent, and dignified. (Plus, every now and then, a lapras buddy looks fondly at your avatar. So engaging!) I'd poured huge quantities of stardust — and so many, many, many kilometers walked (including through most of the Valentine's double-candy event) — into powering up my lapras as high as my trainer level allowed. She'd had my fourth-highest CP, and was my go-to gym defender (when not my buddy), even over my snorlax, because she adds both class and diversity to gyms. Now she has my ninth-highest CP, down under gengar and above cloyster, and I don't even know where her moveset falls anymore.

Granted, I should have known this was coming. Lapras was left out of the previous rebalancing because of the big lapras event in Japan's Tōhoku region (trying to help bring in tourism, as they're still recovering from the 2011 earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear plant incident). I should have guessed that her omission wasn't permanent. Indeed, I should have recognized that the event itself made lapras rebalancing more necessary for the overall meta-game. (But. Still. Niantic, why did you have to hurt my lapras?)

Did any of your pet pokémon get nerfed?

Togetic arrives!

By virtue of the double-candy mechanic in Pokémon Go's current Valentine's event (which runs into the morning of February 15, Pacific Time), I got to evolve togepi into togetic today!

Of togetic's possible movesets, mine got the one that's best for attacking (zen headbutt & dazzling gleam), with the psychic-type quick move (the steel-type quick move is togetic's best for defending). Should I spend stardust powering up my togetic? Probably not, I'm thinking (togetic's GamePress entry). Togetic is every bit a middle-stage evolution, with limited movesets and stats. On the one hand, this implies that Niantic is designing with togepi's final stage, togekiss, properly in mind, which is right and just. On the other hand, with no Gen2 yet, Gen4 is forever if ever away.

This leaves me exactly 2 pokémon short of completing my regional pokedex (for today's available pokemon): dragonite and kabutops.

A magikarp hatched! (So a gyarados evolved!)

You may remember that gyarados was one of the 4 pokémon still missing from my North American pokédex. No longer! (3 to go.)

Saturday morning, at least 40 minutes' drive north, over the border into an adjacent poké-biome where they get more water types (my immediate area gets bug, ground and fire types), I picked up a green 2K egg. Saturday afternoon, that egg hatched a magikarp, boosting my magikarp candy count over 400 at last! Saturday evening, I evolved my one (and probably only ever) gyarados. It has 96% IVs; I've been saving up that prime magikarp for this purpose for months. Unfortunately, it got the poorest available gyarados moveset (bite and twister), but, hey, even a less efficient gyarados is by far a more effective gym defender than most other pokémon species ("Category: Atrocious" ~grin~).

In other weekend pokénews, I earned my gold medal in fairy types, and, still campaigning for diversity in gyms, I held slots (for at least a few hours each) with my muk, vileplume, and cloyster. Muk looks so weird on top of gyms, spreading ickily all over! Vileplume is cute and deadly, with her solar beam. Cloyster seems happy, icing all comers.

(As a reminder, last week was an update, so this week is a nest migration. If you've got any good nests nearby (Silph Road Atlas), you may want to stop by before 12 AM Thursday UTC — afternoon Wednesday, my time.)

tiny happinesses

I hatched an 89% IVs snorlax with the best available defensive moveset today, and also an 89% hitmonlee with two fighting-type moves (just right for using against snorlaxes).

I picked up their eggs from unknown pokéstops an hour distant, Saturday morning, helping a friend with a chore. (I must admit that I spring for an incubator each time that I spin a 10K egg.)

4 pokémon to go (North American dex)

You can have many kinds of Pokémon Go fun. You can work on completing your pokédex. You can train in gyms. You can maintain your daily streaks, raise your trainer level, earn badges, enjoy Niantic's events, hike to hatch eggs, contribute to research on the Silph Road or GamePress, and sort and rank and catalogue to your heart's content! (Breeding, trading, and player-versus-player are all supposedly in development.)

I also give myself assignments ("quests"). For weeks, I've been meaning to share my Great Clefable Quest (drama! disappointment! second chances!). And I'm on the verge of fulfilling my Alakazam Attacker Quest (maybe soon!).

But tonight I just wanted to share that I'm exactly 4 pokémon away from completing my North American pokédex for all pokémon available at this time! Who am I missing? Read more... )

100% IV pokémon in PokéGo

There's been some chatter around TrainerTips lately regarding 100% IV pokémon, because TrainerTipsNick caught a wild 100% IV omastar (wow). They're fun to have! I happen to have 5 (listed below). Yet it's important to understand that unless we're powering them all the way up, "100% perfect" is only a vanity license plate. It confers no advantage in gym bouts. It plays no role in moveset distribution. It's just kinda neat. ;-)

What are IVs? )

My own 5 100%s are: beedrill, rapidash, starmie, tauros, and arbok. blithering about my 100% pokémon )

How about you, fellow trainers? Any 100% IV pokemon on your squads? Or do you have much better things to do than feed data into PokeAssistant? :-D

Starter evolutions (New Year's event follow-up)

I did my starter evolutions after the New Year's event ended (with a lucky egg on for those "added to pokédex" XP bonuses!). As mentioned, I had enough candies to evolve and keep one each of every stage of all three starters, plus double enough for venusaur (grass types have always been common here). I'd been storing up my starter candies ever since I started playing, and keeping three of each starter, swapping out the lowest IVs each time I caught or hatched a new one, so...

Bulbasaur family )

Charmander family )

Squirtle family )

How went the PokéGo New Year's event for you?

ready to evolve the starter families

I've "won" the New Year's event! :-) That is, I achieved my personal game goal for PokéGo's "increased starter spawns" period. As of this evening, with only 4 ultraballs left (after hoarding them for ages), I have enough candies and enough high-IV pokémon to evolve and keep one each of every stage of the 3 starters: the complete bulbasaur, charmander, and squirtle families!

I even have enough bulbasaur candies to evolve a second venusaur, if the first one gets a poor moveset. But I don't have enough for a second charizard or blastoise; whatever moves they learn will be the moves I'll bring to gyms.

I'll do the evolutions after the event ends — with a lucky egg on! — just in case I catch or hatch any with higher IVs and/or CP.

On a separate note, the GPS drift has been dire at my home lately. If my avatar has to stand around in the next neighborhood, I keep thinking, couldn't she go just a little to the side and stand at their pokéstop? ;-) Alas, no...

all the babies

A togepi has hatched for me! The pokedex entry for togepei says: "This pokemon stores up feelings of happiness inside its shell, then shares them with others."

With this togepei's happy arrival, I'm now lucky enough to have one each of all 7 of the babies: pichu, cleffa, igglybuff, togepi, smoochum, elekid, magby. My pokedex rolls all the way up to magby at 240. (I spent Christmas Eve day hiking; it was lovely! I spent Christmas Day evening walking off moods raised by relatives; it was... look! hatched eggs!) While of course I'm nowhere near evolving togetic, with only one togepi, I still feel a personal sense of completion for this stage of the game — that is, the release of the babies.

Now, at least until the New Year's event with the increased starter spawns, I'll return to my ongoing quest for a clefable. I caught my one and only clefairy on my birthday. (Fairy types! So appropriate!) Even if I had enough candies, I wouldn't evolve my one cleffa or my one clefairy to get a clefable, leaving their spots empty. I need to either catch one wild, or recruit enough of its family...

Stories for me to remember to look at via Yuletide 2016

I haven't yet read any, but I see that Yuletide 2016 yielded:
  • 3 new D&DC stories (and there's 1 that posted independently in October, since the last time I checked)
  • 3 new FK stories (and there's 1 that posted independently on Christmas Day)
  • 0 new BSG78 stories (although 3 posted independently in November and December)
  • 0 new YB stories (although someone included it in a mass crossover in October; otherwise, it last had a story of any kind in 2013)
  • 14 new Galavant stories
  • 13 new Pokémon Go stories (I didn't know PokéGo fanfic was a thing. But OF COURSE it is.)
And many, many more. Including 4 stories for A Ladies' Guide to Collecting Mermaid Love Songs by Aimee Picchi, which I'd never heard of, but will be looking up on the strength of that title!

I'm particularly looking forward to the D&DC tales. Falling prey to prejudging a fanfic by its tags and summary, I think they look congenial. I shall see... :-)

Do you pronounce it kleee-fa or klefff-a?

I hatched a cleffa! I now have one cleffa, one clefairy, and ... no clefable. Yet.

Now that I'm home from work this evening, I gather that there's other exciting Pokemon Go news* to discover and process. But! First things first: my cleffa is cute and has second-tier IVs. ;-)

How goes your pursuit of the babies, fellow trainers?

* Turns out that it was just data-mining. Word is that there are other probable holiday treats hidden in the latest code, but don't count your mon before they hatch...

my first 2nd-gen pokémon

I hatched a Pichu today! 87% IVs (11, 14, 14). Plain normal-type Quick Attack, so no STAB, but the babies aren't really for battling, anyway.

He's adorable!

And he's opened up all these mysterious slots in my pokédex for future filling. ;-)

How are you guys doing? Any lucky hatches of eggs picked up since Monday? Any sponsored pokéstops usefully placed for you? Any hat-wearing pikachus? Oh, and apparently there was another migration yesterday or today.

caught 3 dittos!

This afternoon, before the rain returns tomorrow, I went to a park confirmed on Silph Road as an oddish nest. In addition to enough oddishes for the candies to fully power up my double-S.T.A.B. vileplume with solar beam (my current favorite pokémon), an exeggcute, a totally random jynx (you never see jynxes here; my previous jynx was hatched), and assorted ordinary catches, I happened upon 3 dittos! The release is real!

2 were disguised as ratattas; the other as a pidgey. (I strongly suspect that some zubats that got away from me were also dittos in disguise, and probably some other ratattas and pidgies that got away.) Stats do differ; they're not clones. All 3 of mine came in between 51% and 64% IVs (usually, I send anything under 82% to the professor, but not a new entry in the pokédex, obviously).

Given that ditto has catch and flee rates on par with the starters, my guess is that any relentlessly ordinary pokémon (e.g. ratatta, pidgey, zubat, ekans, krabby, paras, caterpie) that show surprising catch resistance now have a fair chance of being ditto in disguise. Or they may just be strong ordinary pokemon, and a waste of your razz berries and great balls: impossible to know! :-)

Anybody else snag a ditto yet?

recent Pokémon Go events

I enjoyed the recent Pokémon Go events, both Halloween's spooky spawns and the "introducing daily bonuses" hauls. I hope that you all had fun! It seems likely that Niantic'll hold similar events again. There are rampant Thanksgiving rumors, which seems odd, as the game is global and US Thanksgiving is... US. (It'd be easy to twin the Halloween candy event at Eastertime, with the victreebel, vileplume, venomoth, and beedrill families. I haven't imagined anything good for the December holidays, not only because there's so little ice in first generation, but because... fair's fair southern hemisphere summer!)

Have you heard about the Japanese lapras event? To hopefully economically help the region harmed by the earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear meltdown. (I contributed a mite to the gofundme to send TrainerTipsNick there to get a lapras and a farfetched, report back to us, and carry our good wishes to those still affected.) There's speculation that it's a try-out for introducing the legendaries.

While enjoying the events when I could, I'm also glad to have the game back to normal. There was a franticness to taking good advantage of the events in time. We adults can't play much during our workweeks, obviously, and while I really do enjoy long weekend walks listening to thoughtful news analysis podcasts or awesome Great Courses lectures, it does get dark so early at this end of the year in the northern hemisphere... and, frankly, I personally need a breather from even the most thoughtful news analysis, I think.

We got the new pokémon tracker here!

My area got the new PokéGo tracker overnight! You know, the "Nearby" view with the pokéstop backgrounds that they've been ~cough~ A/B testing, if you buy that making San Francisco "A" while the rest of the world is "B" is a valid experimental model. ;-)

I see online that it's still limited to the west coast of the US, but that it should roll out globally in the not too distant future.

I have lots of errands and chores to do now that it's finally the weekend — not to mention the specific weekend before the election, the weekend before a family birthday, two weekends before Thanksgiving, and ack! not enough weekends! before my HLH_shortcuts story comes due — but the weather looks kind today... I will definitely make time to get to a park where I can toy with this new tracker while taking a walk and listening to a podcast.

(I've actually been planning a special little trip to San Francisco, ostensibly to see a certain museum exhibit, but not a little to also get to play with their tracker and explore what is reputed to be their super-duper "Niantic's engineers live here" pokémon hunting. ~grin~)

the week of the 10K eggs

This past week was very busy. While I remembered to spin the pokéstops on the way in and out of my workplace — and to regularly nab the pidgies, rattatas, and parases that spawned at my apartment at 28 minutes past the hour until the latest migration — I was paying so little attention overall that I was taken by surprise on Friday to realize that I'd somehow accumulated 4 10K eggs! I've never before had more than one 10K egg at a time.

The weather was kind over the weekend, and I didn't scruple to shell out for incubators, so I did hatch all 4 by Monday: 2 magmars, 1 chansey, and 1 dratini. None were new types to me, but all are exceedingly rare here (I had exactly 2 of each before these hatches).

Lots of stardust, lots of candy, but mostly the great fun of anticipation. Would they be any of the 34 pokémon that I don't yet have? Not this time. But next time...!

badge bonuses, hurray!

I'm loving the badge bonuses from the latest Pokémon Go update. I've leveled up pretty far, and facing 300 CP pidgies who wouldn't settle down in anything less than an ultraball was getting frustrating (as well as absurd: pidgies!).

Everyone knows about this, right? All those type badges we've been accumulating now grant catch probability bonuses for their type of pokémon. We know that it's +1 bronze, +2 silver, and +3 gold — and that dual-type pokémon average your badges for their types — but I haven't personally seen the exact math set out yet.

I did succeed in setting my ~900 CP hitmonchan in a gym tonight, after picking up my snail mail. If you're training up that gym, be sure to field a squad where all 6 have ~450 CP or less, so that you get maximum experience and prestige against her (it's calculated from the highest in the squad now), and then flee before the snorlax stomps you. :-) I recommend fairy and flying types for training against a fighting type!

If you're battling the gym to take it for another team, though, leave my hitmonchan alone. ;-)

Diversify the pokégyms!

Tired of seeing the same pokémon in every gym? I am! Want to do something about it? Let's diversify! The next time that you take a gym, consider popping in your cool, weird, cute, rare, well-loved pokémon, instead of always those with the very highest CP. Everyone has memorized the type advantages for arcanine and exeggutor by now. But do they know what to field against your awesome starmie?

Yesterday, after work, the gym across the street belonged to my team, so I trained it up and installed my wigglytuft! On Sunday, the gym near my church hosted my porygon! I've put my golem and machamp in gyms. Next, I'm looking for an opportunity to show off my hitmonchan!

Of course everyone plays PokéGo in different ways, finding amusement in different aspects; I'm not suggesting abandoning any gameplay that's bringing happiness! But I am a bit tired of all the arcanines and snorlaxes stacked five deep around here. And with the recent update by which pokémon that you see in gyms get added to your "Seen" count, it's more fun than ever to exhibit your rare catches (and hatches) in gyms, knowing you're contributing to pokédexes! Also, of course, though I haven't gotten this update yet, myself, the imminent change to training, where you field a squad and the defenders normalize to match your trainer level, makes having the highest CP in the gym slightly less relevant? Or perhaps I think that only because I live in an urban area where gyms change hands often, so I get in, collect my defender bonus, and wait to welcome my fainted pokémon home. To hold a gym for more than an hour or two, even with my strongest, I need to go hiking...

Credit: I picked up this idea from Trainer Tips Nick, one of my favorite YouTubers (and definitely my favorite pokéYouTuber). So far, it is indeed amusing me. :-) If it might amuse you, too, give it a try!
