Everywoman '21 authors reveal

The [community profile] everywoman exchange has revealed its authors. (Check out the collection.)

I shared last week that I was so lucky as to receive both a match gift and a treat. Now I know which is which (via a post by Greer), as well as by whom:
I couldn't share before -- though I forgot to abridge the footnotes for the anonymous period, so it wasn't disguised -- that my own contribution was:

"For the Living" (FK: Natalie & Grace) by me for Greerwatson
(2.3K words, Gen)
In the background of "Cherry Blossoms," from Natalie's perspective, to celebrate Natalie and Grace at work...

Beta contributions: Many thanks to [personal profile] malinaldarose for cheerleading and [personal profile] skieswideopen for consulting! I'm grateful for your kind help.

"Moving On" by Susan G.

During dinner tonight, I was re-reading some of Susan G.'s FK fanfic that I have on my Kindle. (I have most of her FK fanfic on my Kindle, and on a hard-drive, and in the Cloud. Susan G.'s FK fanfic is not just my favorite, it's nigh unto deutero-canon.)

By chance, I came across a little story called "Moving On" of which I had no conscious memory. Oh. My. Goodness. It was very nearly like getting to read a new Susan G. story.

I can't seem to find it online to link to it for you. Her family kept her site up for years after she died, but... not forever. She died before the AO3 came along. And many of the FK-specific archives have now closed.

So: Spoilers. Read more... )

It's so early-second-season. So classic. So ... refreshing.

Susan, we were so lucky to have you while we did. I trust you know now how much good you did, in all the ways, all your life.

Meme: Show-not-tell love languages (FK Edition)

Back in September, [personal profile] sholio dove into a certain meme about how people (real and fictional) may habitually express and accept love (all kinds) in very different ways. For example: touch, words, deeds, gifts, time, etc. (The meme originator also went over how not all "love languages" are compatible for all people, leading to mistranslations, as it were, and also noting that while many individuals give and accept love in the same language, not all do.)

Sholio wrote that it's "an interesting tool to have in your characterization toolbox, especially for characters who come down really hard in one category or another... or absolutely suck at certain categories."

Ever since, I've wanted to try this paradigm on my favorite fandoms. Yet FK could be the worst fit for this. A fictional character with a single creator, or a solid "story bible," could well be as consistent as — or more than! — a real person. But FK? Different writers, directors, editors, networks? Seasonal reality adjustments? No more of a show "bible" than the opening-credits voice-over? Not to mention the differences in acceptable interactions and their interpretations across eras and around the world? Eeek.

Let's try anyway. :-D

"Bag of Bolts" HL/FK crossover in HLH_Shortcuts

The story written for me in the [community profile] hlh_shortcuts exchange has revealed. I think that many of you may enjoy it! Take a look? It's a first-season HL/FK crossover starring Tessa and Natalie. The plot depends on each acting with professional passion and authority. A clever conceit amusingly finesses the crossover.
"Bag of Bolts" by [currently Anonymous]
G, gen, 7K words
Natalie, Tessa, Duncan, OCs
Summary: Natalie attends an ME convention at a hotel where Tessa is installing a sculpture. Danger. Bonding. Pie.

More like Yuletide than FKFicFest, the HLH_Shortcuts prompt slates seem to be pretty loose suggestions. I didn't specifically request (or imagine) this scenario. All credit to the author for the happy surprise.

Of both series, I do dearly love their first seasons, when motivations were clear and rich, and triumphant possibilities endless. Their first seasons, I rewatch just for fun, just for joy.

FK Fanfic: "Wake the Morning After" (my 2015 FKFicFest story!)

The story that I wrote for the 2015 [community profile] fkficfest/[livejournal.com profile] fkficfest released very early in the game. (Thanks to [personal profile] lastscorpion for the lightning beta!) I'd love it if you read it! If you do, please consider letting me know what I should learn from this one to make the next more interesting and satisfying.

First, though, please check out all the other stories! There's something to tempt every FK taste.

On the AO3: "Wake the Morning After
  Length: 14,995 words
  Date: August 2015
  Rating: PG-13
Characters:  Natalie, Nick, Schanke, Urs, Lacroix, Lili; original characters; "off screen" Serena, Feliks, Enforcers
Setting: ~2015; divergent reality; branched from canon in the hiatus between the first and second seasons
Summary: Back in the day, Natalie cured Nick's vampirism; they got married. Two decades later, something has gone terribly wrong.
Quotation: "Yet Nick had never stopped looking over his shoulder, never stopped expecting an ambush by the existence he’d left behind. Nick had told Natalie about many such dangers — his resentful surviving converts; hunters of vampires; cronies of Nick’s deceased “master,” Lacroix; and, first, foremost and always, the Enforcers, who kept the vampires’ secrets."

5 Stories Released; 4 To Go (with 3 thought-provoking links)

We're 5 stories into this year's [community profile] fkficfest/[livejournal.com profile] fkficfest/FKFicFest, with 4 to go!

From the bottom of my heart, I thank first our 9 writers, and then all the wonderful readers who found time to dive into an FK story during this busy work-week. Some people plan to dig into the ficathon over the weekend. I wish them very happy reading! The stories to date have collectively referenced (at least!) every one of the opening-credits cast of characters, and they cross several genres and span all the ratings.

For when you're happily caught up on the fest stories, here are 3 items that happened to cross my radar this week, all of which struck me as FK-related:

  • A book about Natalie. I read an engaging, intriguing excerpt on Slate from the new memoir Working Stiff: Two Years, 262 Bodies, and the Making of a Medical Examiner by Judy Melinek, MD, and immediately added the book to my Amazon cart, visions of better-informed Natalie fanfic dancing in my head.

  • An analysis about Nick. Also on Slate, I read a Quora answer: "Could Modern Troops Defeat Medieval Knights in Hand-to-Hand Combat?" by Jon Davis, Marine sergeant, Iraq vet, weapons instructor. If I may spoil the ending, he concludes that, all else being equal, a medieval knight would surely defeat a modern Marine in solo hand-to-hand combat; his reasoning covers both culture and technology.

  • An essay about all of us. Over in the NYT, columnist Timothy Egan wrote a reflection on Robin Williams's death, and concluded: "My plea here is for people to give the needed space to artists and performers to fail every now and then, and to understand how exposed someone feels when trying something new." That's a profound consideration for everyone, and I'm trying to take it to heart and become better, myself. With my mind full of FKFicFest this week, though, I couldn't help also hearing it specifically in terms of this year's players; with only 9 writers and all FK's diverse perspectives, some of the matches invited bold moves outside of comfort zones. That's hard! And everyone rose to the occasion! There's a lot of "trying something new" in this year's game. I hope we can give each author just the right space.

"Fallen Idol," then and now

This past week, I scraped up enough time to watch two Forever Knight episodes, one of them "Fallen Idol." FI is the pro-wrestling murder case with the vampire-blood injection of the developmentally-impaired witness and the flashback to Nick's nephew Andre (played by Hayden Christensen). It includes the notorious "teen night at the Raven" and the infamous "pit of condemned bimbos." It happens only two episodes after Janette's return and departure in "The Human Factor," and just five episodes before the finale, "Last Knight."

My Fandom Stocking Stories: FK "In Pursuit of the Paladin" and HL "Lazarus Heart"

I've previously posted about the nice things that I received in my own Fandom Stocking this year, and about the neat things that I spotted in other people's Fandom Stockings, so tonight I thought I'd point out the items that I stuffed into some Fandom Stockings myself. I didn't create as widely or well as I'd have liked, but I did have fun writing:

  • Highlander: "Lazarus Heart" (Methos/Alexa, 918 words, G) (beta-read by [personal profile] celli!) for [personal profile] beccadg's wish
I'd never tried Methos/Alexa before, but the attempt turned out surprisingly satisfying for me. I hope that it works as well for readers, and doesn't bog down when I poke around inside Methos's head for a bit in the middle.

  • Forever Knight: "In Pursuit of the Paladin" (Lacroix & Natalie with Nick implied, 991 words, PG) (beta-read by [personal profile] skieswideopen!) for [personal profile] pj1228's wish
This led me to a new approach to the ever-vexing problem of how to write for fellow FK fans who personally prefer "dark" takes that I can't support, myself. Here, I imagined a "bright" scenario that I'd love, but told it from Lacroix's perspective. It worked better for me than some past, straining attempts to approach "dark" prompts, but I don't know whether it really bridges the problem of sufficient respect for preferences I can't share. Maybe it's better not to try? There are so few of us! Are mismatches better than no matches, or not?

  • A handful of fanfiction "gift certificates" in FK and HL for stories to be posted to the AO3 sometime in 2014
(Four have been redeemed/accepted so far. Coincidentally, that's the same number I still owe from the last time I tried this — you know who you are. ~grin~)

FK Fanfic: "Fair Shares" (a Christmas Cookies and Mistletoe story)

I conceived this fairly light gen piece for the [community profile] fkcommentfic/[livejournal.com profile] fkcommentfic "Bloor Mistletoe Challenge" (open through January 6), but it grew all out of commentfic proportions. I considered bonsai-ing it. However, after very generous betareading from [personal profile] batdina and [livejournal.com profile] pj1228 on New Year's Day itself, I concluded that a short story fit the idea best.

Available: The AO3 | I'll put it on my fansite soon.
  Length: 2,408 words
  Date: FKFic-L and AO3 01/01/13
  Rating: G
Characters:  Nick, Schanke, Natalie; cameo by Stonetree; passing mentions of Myra, Jenny, Janette, Lacroix, Norma, Grace, Fleur, Patrice, Dietrich, Lipinski
Summary: Schanke has Christmas cookies for almost everyone.
Quotation: "I feel lousy resorting to this for my own partner, but— go on, open it."

FK Fanfic For Me: "Mementos" by Hearts_blood (G, gen, ~2K)

[livejournal.com profile] hearts_blood generously wrote my prompt in her "Cuddle/Kiss/Sex" meme, producing a very pleasant gen rumination on Nick's relationship with the Caddy, framed by Schanke interaction, and sporting three (count 'em! three!) mini-flashbacks (two historical, one within canon).  A boy and his car...

I prompted "cuddle, FK, Nick & his car, parking lot."  She replied with "Mementos" (G, gen, ~2K words; Nick, Schanke, Natalie, Sydney, Others) on LJ and AO3.  I appreciate her tackling my off-the-wall suggestion!

FK Fanfic: "A Hunt by Any Other Name"

This is the [livejournal.com profile] fandom_stocking story that I wrote for [personal profile] havocthecat this year.  She said that she likes "stories about women, focusing on their relationships and friendships, and... saving themselves and each other" (and, yes, Forever Knight).  I'm satisfied with the main action of this story, but possibly the tag is unnecessary.  (Boxing Day in Ontario, by the way, resembles Black Friday in the US, thus providing the pre-dawn setting.)

My thanks to [personal profile] skieswideopen for Canada-checking!  My thanks to [personal profile] celli for beta-reading!

Available: My Fansite | The AO3
  Length: 1,773 words
  Date: Fandom Stocking 01/06/12, FKFic-L 01/26/12
  Rating: PG
  Characters:  Janette, Natalie
Summary: Janette and Natalie are among the passengers stuck in a glass-sided mall elevator under a skylight, with dawn on the way.
Quotation: "However the observance had begun, it had evolved into a holiday honoring the hunt — and of the hunt, Janette was a most ardent devotee."

FK Fanfic: "Thirty-One, Level 1"

This is the [livejournal.com profile] fandom_stocking story that I wrote for [livejournal.com profile] amilyn this year.  She said that she likes "strong women," "aftermath," and "fic that... fits into canon" (and, naturally, Forever Knight).  It's a light piece, with a few passing serious reflections.

My thanks to Malinaldarose for her speedy beta-reading!  My thanks to Celli for her precise beta-recommendations!

Available: My Fansite | The AO3
  Length: 1,336 words
  Date: Fandom Stocking 01/06/12, FKFic-L 01/23/12
  Rating: G
  Characters:  Natalie, Sharon
Summary: On her thirty-first birthday, Natalie dyes her hair for the first time.
Quotation: "But what could she say if Nick... envied her?  Worse, what if this change in her pushed him to notice time passing, to see the day coming when department ribbing about his appetite would turn instead to his youth?"

Seeking N&Ner Happy Endings Fanfiction

[livejournal.com profile] honor_reid has asked for recommendations of high-quality Nick/Natalie stories with endings that grant the characters, if not a happy-ever-after, at least an "ordinary-ever-after."  So many FK stories conclude sadly, bittersweetly, suddenly, or tucked back into canon that she'd appreciate directions to some more definitively hopeful endgames for her favorite couple.

I can think of some stories (listed below), but I bet that you all can think of many more!  After all, I'm a gen fan at heart; most of you are romance fans.  And where I lean IB and Les Mis, many of you are N&Ners!  So please pitch in, if you can.  And yes, please mention your own work, if it matches.

(I may harvest stories mentioned in comments for future recommendation-of-the-month use, so you know.)

Scenes with Both Janette and Natalie

When [personal profile] celli kindly beta-read "A Hunt by Any Other Name," my [livejournal.com profile] fandom_stocking Janette and Natalie stuck-in-an-elevator story, we chatted about the challenge of bringing those characters together.

The nature of Forever Knight keeps Janette and Natalie apart.  Whether we diagram the characters as a linear continuum, or overlapping circles, or atomic shells, the story structure puts Nick in the middle and Janette and Natalie to either side (with Lacroix and Schanke a step beyond them), representing Nick's different worlds, his dual nature.  Canon embodies some themes by physically anchoring Janette in her club and Natalie in her lab, while moving Nick between them (how much the club and the lab are respectively full of life and of death, and the thematic questions and reversals in that, is a fascinating topic of its own).

If I'm counting correctly, canon puts Janette and Natalie in the same scene in just 9 episodes (out of 70), for a total of 10-12 separate scenes (depending how you count scene interruptions).  They're together in the Raven 6 times, the loft 2, and once each at the morgue and a crime scene.  In aired order — which, in second season, is not production order, and not the order on the DVDs; grateful as I am for the DVDs, their order still irritates me — they are: list )

Did I forget any?

[Addendum: Per [livejournal.com profile] pj1228, I forgot "Close Call." It's now listed. Thanks!]

FK Recommendation November 2011

What's Good?  I'm glad to get to point out [personal profile] havocthecat's amusing vignette "Could They Choose Between" (2008, G, ~1K) as November's story in the recommendation-of-the-month project.  The characters spar via banter here in mid-first-season, lightly feeling out their places in each other's lives.

"You already met Schanke," said Natalie. She chuckled and leaned back on her desk as the beat of her heart began to echo more slowly. "I figured he'd be enough to last you at least a century."
"Perhaps longer," agreed Janette. She made a little pout of distaste, though truly, if one could look beyond his boorishness, Schanke was not quite so bad as all that. She might even call him admirable, though certainly not aloud.

FK Recommendation August 2011

What's Good?  On FKFic-L, August used to be "Susan's Birthday Month," honoring Susan G.'s immense contributions to the fandom with an abundance of new fanfic for everyone to enjoy.  (Her email signature at that time: "For my birthday, I want fiction. Lots and lots of fiction. Tons of the stuff.")  This August, in memory, the recommendations project features one participant in that happy tradition: "Strays" by [livejournal.com profile] amilyn (1997, G, ~2K words).  It's a straightforward relation of how Sydney (and Nick) settled into Natalie's life.

As the door closed behind them, Sydney meowed once, then walked with some dignity to the new furniture he wasn't supposed to sit on, and made himself at home.

What's New on FKFic-L?  July saw two new pieces on the fanfiction email list: "Flying Sparks" by [livejournal.com profile] greerwatson (short story) and "Problem Child" by [personal profile] 1_mad_squirrel (haiku).  August saw six!  (All came from FKFicFest. I'll list them next month, as usual.)

FK Fanfic: "Malicious Mischief"

I wrote "Malicious Mischief" for [personal profile] sholio's prompt in FKFicFest 2011.  This is the one in which a murder at the Raven defies Janette's cover-up skills, Nick is away pursuing the Abarrat, and Schanke and Janette are both quitting smoking.

Thanks to [personal profile] batdina and [personal profile] lastscorpion for beta-reading!  Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] wiliqueen and [personal profile] leela_cat for brainstorming!

Available: The Ficathon | My Fansite | The AO3
  Length: ~9,100 words
  Date: FKFicFest 07/16/11
  Rating: PG
Summary: While Nick is out of town, Schanke and Janette must cooperate to solve a crime at the Raven.
Characters:   Schanke, Janette, Nick, Natalie, Miklos, Alma, Grace
Quotation: "The woman herself was ebony-and-ivory gorgeous as always, pale skin revealed by a black evening dress in all the right places as she leaned back in her chair, shining dark hair twisted up behind her head. FK Recommendation July 2011

What's Good?  Nostalgia in the just-concluded FKFicFest 2011 moves me to point out "Brown Paper Packages" by Susan G. (1995, PG, ~2K words) as July's recommendation-of-the-month.  This amusing, slightly sly, "meta" story recalls when new FK tales of all descriptions arrived on the email lists every day.

The superior look on Janette's face was irritating. Just to prove her wrong, Natalie slid onto a barstool and began reading where Janette indicated. Almost immediately, her stomach dropped to the level of her toes—it was about her and... LaCroix? ... Horrified, she watched Janette briskly staple and stack set after set... "How long has this been going on?"
"... It used to be Alma's chore, but the silly thing got the piles mixed up and Nicola received LaCroix's set in error." Janette sighed... "There was such a scene."

FK Recommendation June 2011

What's Good?  "Happy Anniversary" (1996, ~4K words, PG) by [livejournal.com profile] butterflykiki is June's installment in the recommendation-of-the-month project.  In this sharp confrontation, written while third season was still in progress, Natalie drops all her defenses in a bid to save Nick from Lacroix... and himself.  On this side of "Last Knight," the story combines the energy of live canon with a shivery consciousness of last chances.

"Forgive me, doctor."  A smile tugged at the edges of Lacroix's mouth.  "Many women have desired Nicholas.  Some have even cared about him.  Quite a few thought they loved him... but I can't recall the last one who was willing to take such risks for him, knowing all that he is.  No, wait— I do remember.  What a long time ago that was..."

What's New on FKFic-L?  One new story, "Cuts Deep" (~11K words, PG-13), and one new poem, "Solace" (~300 words, PG), posted to the list in May.  (Both were by me, sorry.)  No new fanfiction has yet posted to the list in June.
