Preliminary Yuletide pickings

I won't start reading Yuletide until tomorrow, but I've opened tabs and wanted to share:

Yuletide brings us:
  • 2 new Forever Knight stories, one Nick/Natalie and one Nick/Lacroix. Take your pick.
  • 4 new works for assorted The Legend of Zelda games (the newest one and the least popular old ones were eligible). I am all agog to read the crossover between Majora's Mask and Columbo. See the list.
  • 1 new work for the Doctor Strange comics, this one starring Zelma Stanton, hero librarian! Check it out.
  • 0 new D&DC, BSG78, JttW, YB, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish or Dead Poets Society stories. But of course there are other fandoms to check over time, and treats to come.

Plus, HLH_Shortcuts continues to reveal 2 new Highlander stories per day. With 20 total works in this year's collection, we're at exactly 10 revealed and 10 to go, with a wide diversity of lengths, characters, and approaches ... though not a lot of Duncan, curiously, in those I've read so far. Find your favorite.

(A very merry Christmas to everyone celebrating! And warm wishes to everyone, period!)

Key December exchanges sign-up countdowns

Highlander Holiday Shortcuts sign-ups remain open through 11:59pm Pacific Time, 22 October (which is about 38.5 hours away as I post this). I'll both write and read in this annual HL exchange. There are 13 sign-ups so far; here's mine. As always, reveals begin on Duncan's birthday, the winter solstice. See [community profile] hlh_shortcuts.

(If you end up as my match, and my sign-up doesn't quickly, happily click for you, please have the mod, or any of our common connections, nudge me to write an all-new Dear Author letter instead of merely linking to past ones! It's just that I have so many past ones. And I never run out of wanting more of what I love best? ~grin~)

Yuletide sign-ups remain open and editable through 9pm UTC, Saturday, 21 October (which is about 5.5 hours away as I post this). I'm not playing Yuletide; I do look for stories to read there every year, especially in D&DC and other very sleepy beloved fandoms. Indeed, many fandoms, I read only during Yuletide, skimming the lists, seeing what's there, and remembering fondly what I might not otherwise have thought of. See [community profile] yuletide_admin.

FK is again eligible for Yuletide (151 qualifying stories from the ceiling)

Yesterday, the annual Yuletide small-fandoms exchange announced that it has adjusted its calculation to exclude FFnet. Read the post.

Eligible Yuletide fandoms must still have under 1,000 works that are in English, complete, and at least 1,000 words long. (Crossovers and fusions do count toward the total, their post says.) But only on the AO3.

Forever Knight is again eligible for Yuletide. If I searched and mathed correctly, then FK currently has 848 such works, with 151 to go before again becoming ineligible. At our current rate, considering both new stories and folks moving their own old works to the AO3, I feel that eligibility would likely last ~4 years. We shall see!

thoughts toward this year's FKFicFest

We've had a week now with the prompts for this year's [community profile] fkficfest. I hope at least one of the three will click with everyone interested!

It's too early for me to know which prompt I'll use or what story I'll discover, myself, but thinking on the options:
  • I looked up the "You can't have a better tomorrow if you're thinking about yesterday..." prompt and learned that the person who said it is a historical public figure with a legacy in automotive, weaponry, and environmental unintended consequences. So a run-in with that person's work could be one way of addressing that prompt (alongside the clear call-out to Nick's lines to Alyce in DK1, and subtler call-outs throughout the series).
  • Pondering the "When everything changed" prompt, it occurred to me that it could suggest an AU or time-travel of some kind, as well as a turning point known from canon in the characters' pasts or deduced or invented new. Or it could be played smaller-scale or for comedy with the change being something like a new haircut or a glasses prescription, rather than something more obviously world-shaking, like the AMPH asteroid or Vesuvius, or someone dying or being born, or becoming a vampire or being cured of vampirism, or learning a deep truth. And of course the change could be for one of our recurring characters or for a suspect, victim, neck-of-the-week, etc.
  • While the "hidden witness" prompt can readily speak to a witness for a police investigation, whether a human witness or an animal, plant, or inanimate one, or a witness to vampirism (a la an Enforcers incident), the word "witness" can be either noun or verb, and as a noun can be either the possessor of evidence or the evidence itself, and it has specific legal and religious uses as well as its common use.
What do you think?

I plan to start posting about the fest to the usual places throughout this coming week. No more posting on [community profile] yuletide for us, as FK finally outgrew Yuletide last year* and is officially no longer a "small" fandom, but: [community profile] fandom_on_dw, [community profile] fandomcalendar, [community profile] fksquee, [community profile] last_writes, and [community profile] femme_fic. Any others?

* That FK outgrew Yuletide only just last year and BSG78 is still fully eligible witnesses to the voluminous loss of fanfic through the years. Library of Alexandria...

Yuletide 2020 harvest

Of my core fandoms, 2 won new stories in this year's main Yuletide collection:

D&DC: "Kennig's Ransom"
(G, gen, ~9K words; stars Eric; all the kids play roles; neither DM nor Venger appear) chatter )

BSG78: "The Wandering Prince"
(G, gen, ~6K words; stars Starbuck; almost all recurring characters appear or are referenced, plus Chameleon) chatter )

FK can be in Yuletide this year! But this will be the last. So nominate? Spread the word?

[personal profile] greerwatson just clued me in that Forever Knight will (if just barely) qualify for Yuletide again this year! With 976 stories over 1K words in English across AO3 and FFnet, this will surely be FK's last Yuletide year, unless rules change. (Just one old-time fan uploading her corpus in the year could push us over. And we do plan to play FKFicFest.)

Nominations end on October 1, 2020 at 4:00am Eastern Time (1:00am Pacific Time). Nominate in their tagset.

Greer has nominated Nick, Schanke, Lacroix, and Vachon. [Addendum: [personal profile] senmut has now nominated Natalie, Janette, Cohen, and Grace!] Would others like to nominate Natalie, Janette, and Tracy? Stonetree, Cohen, and Reese? Grace, Urs, Fleur, Screed, Miklos, Alma, Norma? Lisa, Alyssa, Alexandra, Hans, Bernice, Lily, Merlin, Matthew, Myra, the Inca...?

I have never yet played Yuletide. (Reasons.) But! For FK's definite last year, maybe I should make it happen. I can't make any commitments at this time, but I am thinking about it.

(Read Greer's original post.)

Yuletide '19 is open

There are 2 (2!) Fleur stories in Yuletide this year, and I am not in any way involved. How unexpected!

Yuletide fandoms look a bit thin for me, personally, this year, with not even any D&DC (which is usually reliable). But there are 3 FK stories and 1 BSG78 story, plus over 1K fandoms total, so: to read and see! And the '19 HL fanfic exchange is up to 17 of 20 queued stories revealed.

Merry Christmas!

Milestones in FK fanfic archival totals (Could this be FK's last Yuletide?)

In October's "FK Recently" bulletin yesterday, I noted that we've passed the milestone of 1,000 total FK fanworks on the AO3. (Right now: 1,007.)

In reply, [personal profile] greerwatson pointed out, and asked me to signal-boost:
  • We now have over 900 FK stories of 1K or more words across the AO3 and FFnet.
  • Therefore, 2019 could be the last year that FK is eligible for Yuletide.
Indeed, one more big corpus upload like Jean G.'s, plus our typical annual output, would come close to ensuring that '20, if not '19, will be FK's last in the game.

If you're playing this year, you might want to weigh a last Yuletide hurrah for FK...? Nominations close at 9am UTC on 10/11. Learn how to nominate.

Reporting in from Yuletide '18

I see no FK, BSG78, YB, or even D&DC in Yuletide this year. Also nothing for books by George Eliot or Walter Scott. I'll take that as a pointed reminder to make time to write what I want to read.

However, there are 2 stories for The Age of Adelaide, 2 for Dead Poet's Society, 2 for The Lion in Winter, and 1 for The Princess Bride.

You can find your favorite fandoms in this year's Yuletide. Very good luck to all!

Some Yuletide stories to look into

Yuletide has released! I haven't yet read any of the stories, but I can point out these for my personal all-time favorite shows:

Forever Knight got 4 new stories, all (interestingly) featuring third-season characters.
Dungeons & Dragons (the '80s cartoon) got 1 new story:
"Ranger's Responsibility" (PG, m/f, ~1K words) (Hank/Sheila)

Neither the original Battlestar Galactica nor Young Blades got any stories this year. And of course Highlander was ineligible (thus [community profile] hlh_shortcuts).

What has caught your eye?

Stories for me to remember to look at via Yuletide 2016

I haven't yet read any, but I see that Yuletide 2016 yielded:
  • 3 new D&DC stories (and there's 1 that posted independently in October, since the last time I checked)
  • 3 new FK stories (and there's 1 that posted independently on Christmas Day)
  • 0 new BSG78 stories (although 3 posted independently in November and December)
  • 0 new YB stories (although someone included it in a mass crossover in October; otherwise, it last had a story of any kind in 2013)
  • 14 new Galavant stories
  • 13 new Pokémon Go stories (I didn't know PokéGo fanfic was a thing. But OF COURSE it is.)
And many, many more. Including 4 stories for A Ladies' Guide to Collecting Mermaid Love Songs by Aimee Picchi, which I'd never heard of, but will be looking up on the strength of that title!

I'm particularly looking forward to the D&DC tales. Falling prey to prejudging a fanfic by its tags and summary, I think they look congenial. I shall see... :-)

A happy St. Nicholas Day (Nick's name day) to all, and a happy Hanuka starting soon! This reminds me to set out my beloved Forever Net Before Christmas zine so that I can reread its holiday FK stories as part of my Advent joys. (If you don't have the zine, try my "trope:holidays" tag? Over the years, I've linked to as many of its stories as I've found online, and many other FK holiday tales besides).

Now, to business! For the month of November, in my corners of social journaling, here are the Forever Knight items that I happened to see:

  • [community profile] genprompt_bingo, a multifandom fic bingo challenge with gen prompts (but not necessarily gen fills), has opened a new round, lasting through March 2016.
  • [community profile] galentinesday, a multifandom exchange ficathon for female characters' relationships, is taking sign-ups through 12/09. The submission deadline is 2/06/16.

'14 Yuletide Stories (while still anonymous)

It looks like I'm not going to get deeper into the stack any time soon, so I'm going to just go ahead with this list of links now:

Dungeons and Dragons (the '80s cartoon) scored two stories this year, both for Astolat. I enjoyed each in its own way. Both are very pleasingly canon-friendly. The longer is the more skilled, but the shorter serves up an idea that's drawing me back to canon to explore.Forever Knight also boasts two stories, both hefty, one for Greerwatson and one for Quietcuriosity. The one for Greer is plot-driven casefic, just as she likes best; it's set in early to mid second season. The other may be exceedingly excellent, and certainly is canon aware, but it's tagged for graphic violence and rape, so I haven't read it and probably won't; it's set before the flashbacks of "A Fate Worse Than Death." If you read it, let me know what you think — should I go there? We all have our squicks and triggers...1,623 fandoms are represented, but no one happened to write Battlestar Galactica ('78) or Young Blades this year. There are 9 stories each for Forever and Grimm, but a quick glance didn't yield any immediately grabbing my fancy. (There's also nothing for Call the Midwife; did the fandom get too big for this game?)

Do you have any recommendations to share from this year's Yuletide?

Yuletide 2013 First Glance

Merry Christmas!

I always have too many other commitments at Yuletide time, and, having never played, I don't understand the game's intricacies. However, if I'm reading the 2013 Yuletide AO3 Collection correctly, Forever Knight scored one story ("Copper's Instinct," ~6K words), the original Battlestar Galactica two stories (both starring Sheba, one apparently serious and the other evidently absurd; guess which one I'll read ~grin~), the original TV Beauty and the Beast one story ("To Laugh is to Love," ~1K words), the animated Dungeons and Dragons one story (but I'm not going to read it; its tags reveal that it's squicky), and of course Sleepy Hollow has stories coming out of its ears (it's often obvious which series get their one turn at Yuletide in their premiere year only because they're new, not because they're "small").

Highlander and Person of Interest weren't eligible. Yong Blades was, but not nearly enough people love it as it deserves... and there don't seem to be any more closely Dumas-based stories this year, which is even sadder. Nothing for Call the Midwife, either (perhaps everyone is still catching up on the books on which the series is based, before feeling a need for fanfic).

Have you spotted anything good out there in the ocean of Yuledtide fanfic? Please recommend it!

FK Recently: What You Guys Have Been Up To (12/01/12-12/31/12)

As announced on the email lists by Lisa McD, the next FKFic-L "War" game begins on Sunday, January 13, 2013. If, like me, you're not playing, you can set your subscription to "-war" to avoid the war posts (unless you take digests, in which case there's no filtering). You can also read along without playing, of course! I would personally suggest holding any non-war fiction posts until February, but of course that's entirely up to each writer.

Now, for December, in Forever Knight, in my corners of social journaling, here's what I spotted:

Ficathons, Fests and Communities

  • [community profile] fandom_stocking will reveal on 01/06. Four people listed FK among their fandoms. Check out the volunteer post for stockings no one has yet stuffed.
  • [community profile] fkcommentfic/[livejournal.com profile] fkcommentfic has received two entries so far in its "Bloor Mistletoe Challenge," which remains open through 01/06.
  • Yuletide garnered three FK stories this year, one an assigned exchange story, one a "treat," and one in "madness."
  • [personal profile] oxoniensis will hold her 2013 "Porn Battle" game this month, with prompting 01/13-17 and posting 01/20-30.

Fanfiction

Meta (Essays, Analysis, Discussion)

  • 12/27: [livejournal.com profile] twilight2000 recommended "Tainted Draught" (then anonymous; now revealed as Greerwatson's).
  • 12/25: [personal profile] sholio (here) and [personal profile] senmut (here) both recommended "Rondeau" (then anonymous; now revealed as Tolaska's).

(As you also know, she purges some name/address information by default, and will kindly purge more by polite request of affected persons.)
  • 12/12: [personal profile] melissatreglia compiled all the FK prompts for the "Porn Battle" games amnesty, and announced the 2013 game dates and changes.
  • 12/05: [personal profile] melissatreglia mentioned posting her "Trains and Winter Rains" ficlet for [community profile] fkcommentfic.

2011 Yuletide FK Stories Reviewed

This year's Yuletide scored two Forever Knight stories. Unusually for me — eternally behind on my fanfic reading — I jumped my own queue, downloaded the AO3 mobi files to my Kindle, and have read them while they're still anonymous. I enjoyed both in very different ways.

My remarks below contain spoilers! The ratings and warnings/tags in these reviews are mine as a reader, not those of the authors. Finally, please understand that, writing here in my own journal about [currently] anonymous stories, these are indeed actual, old-fashioned reviews, not comments nor recommendations. That is, they frankly consider both good and bad elements as I have fun musing and analyzing. (If you prefer to avoid negative opinions, please skip this post!)

"The Cross" (PG, Gen, ~1K words)
Characters: Lacroix, OMC
Warnings/Tags: Historical, Early Middle Ages, Vampire Violence, Mob Violence, Murder

"A Dark and Stormy Night" (PG, Gen, ~9K words)
Characters: Nick, Tracy, Barbara, Natalie, Sydney
Warnings/Tags: Weather, Hurricane, Flooding, Policework, Homicide, Alcoholism, Family, Flashbacks, Historical, 1950s

FK not eligible for Yuletide?

[Correction: FK is eligible! [livejournal.com profile] skieswideopen (here) and [personal profile] havocthecat (here) kindly explained that I misunderstood.]

Do I understand correctly (from this list) that Forever Knight is not eligible for Yuletide this year?  If so, is FK too big, or did the [community profile] last_writes person who promised to nominate it fail, or were there other considerations?  Granted, I was personally not going to write for Yuletide anyway, but I am taken aback and disappointed.

I'm also anxious that nothing seems to be happening with [livejournal.com profile] oldschoolfic, which has been my winter exchange while y'all play Yuletide.  No exchanges for me this season?  Ah, well.  It's not like I shouldn't be doing other things!
