Yesterday, I learned about a new fanfic gift exchange, [community profile] retrotvexchange, which reminds me of the defunct exchanges [community profile] myoldfandom and [livejournal.com profile] oldschoolfic. Specifically, this exchange celebrates television canons that closed no later than the 2001-2002 season.* Pretty much all scripted fiction genres are eligible (an exception is variety shows).

[community profile] retrotvexchange requires a minimum of 1K words or graphic-art equivalent. Participants request and offer 3-10 fandoms. They plan an accompanying prompt-challenge fest, to accommodate folks who have too few eligible fandoms for the exchange.

Schedule:
  • Nominate: July 15 – 22
  • Sign up: July 26 – August 1
  • Due: September 19
  • Reveal: October 2 (or as soon as all exchange creators have a gift in queue).

* In the US, a broadcast television "season" traditionally aligns roughly with the school year, mid-August to mid-June, especially encompassing the November, February, and May "sweeps" that were the lifeblood of broadcast ratings. July "sweeps" were omitted, from the traditional belief that folks watched too little television in the summer for advertisers to care.

#8. Interact with someone new.

Yesterday, I posted a brief reply to the anonymous moderator of the brand-new [community profile] myoldfandom ficathon, which is gearing up for its first event. ("Old" = no new canon after 2005.) So far, it sounds like an update of [livejournal.com profile] oldschoolfic, which I enjoyed a lot. But I really know nothing at all about [community profile] myoldfandom or the people behind it (and I'm just a little nonplussed by the modly anonymity).

All my own dearest fanficly fandoms qualify, of course. FK, HL, YB, BSG78, D&DC. Probably even the Buffyverse qualifies, although the comics do purport to be canon. It's not that I don't watch and enjoy new series! I'm all over Agent Carter, Once Upon a Time, Person of Interest, Poldark, Call the Midwife, etc. I loved Forever while it lasted, and Grimm and Sleepy Hollow before they jumped their sharks. But of course they aren't — for better and for worse — the same as stories loved long and long and long.

I wonder whether [community profile] rarelywritten is planning a round this year. If so, I wonder whether the schedules will conflict or complement.

  • [livejournal.com profile] oldschoolfic released on 5/30 with three FK stories.
  • [community profile] remix_her/[livejournal.com profile] remix_her is a new female-characters remix challenge, in lieu of a 2012 round of [community profile] femme_fic/[livejournal.com profile] femme_fic. They're polling to pick fandoms.
  • [community profile] fandom_of_one is a community for very small fandoms; FK is eligible.
  • [community profile] fkficfest/[livejournal.com profile] fkficfest sign-ups were open through 05/25. Assignments are out, and writing is underway! Initially, we had 11 players, but a community-members-only Prompt Swap event (open until 11:59PM Pacific 6/01) brought the game to 13 players.
  • [livejournal.com profile] rarewomen released on 5/07, with one FK story and some FK icons.

LK Anniversary Last Week

Wednesday, May 23rd, 2012 09:24 pm
brightknightie: Nick looking up. (Nick)
So in addition to the twentieth anniversary of the first airing of "Dark Knight," FK's premiere, on May 5, this month brought us the sixteenth anniversary of the first airing of "Last Knight," FK's finale, on May 18 (give or take syndication).  I like to post a new piece on the LK anniversary, not in reaction to the episode — at least, not anymore — but rather just to say, hey, we're still here, and the story still lives.

This year, I failed that tradition.  However, for what it's worth, I do have a story waiting in the as-yet-unreleased [livejournal.com profile] oldschoolfic queue... and, yeah, it's FK.

Here's to my favorite show, and to all of you!

Please forgive the lateness of this bulletin, and all my delays related to my computer crash. I am still catching up.

  • [community profile] fkficfest/[livejournal.com profile] fkficfest will open sign-ups this weekend!
  • [livejournal.com profile] rarewomen will release its queue on 5/07. Writers may still pick up pinch-hits and treats (whether or not they played in the main game).
  • [livejournal.com profile] oldschoolfic is holding its queue for a pinch-hit; release may come at any time.

My computer has crashed. Suddenly. Frighteningly. I came home from mass this morning to a computer that wouldn't turn on. And I was an idiot and didn't back up for months. It may be just the power supply, but I am not personally tech-savvy enough to know. (Obviously, I am on someone else's computer right now.)

Fannish Obligations Status:

  • FKFicFest: The opening of FKFicFest sign-ups will just have to continue being delayed for a little while longer. Y'all can think of prompts in advance, right? :-)

  • Rarewomen: Due 4/30. Fully drafted, ~4K words, with beta-reader. One way or another, from one borrowed computer or another, I shouldn't have to default on this game.

  • Oldschoolfic: Due 4/30. The incomplete rough draft existed only on the now-crashed computer. I intended to spend the day finishing it! Instead, I've spent that time panicking and driving to fix-my-computer land. I will request an extension...

  • Recommendation o' the Month: Nope, you didn't miss it. I got way behind and failed to post it. If I can't get to it tomorrow, this will have been the first month without an FK fanfic rec since 1999. I may indulge in back-dating when I catch up...

brightknightie: Nick and his remote control (Remote Control)
I did sign up for [livejournal.com profile] oldschoolfic, the ficathon for canceled series.  Join us?  They've got just ~5 players for their spring event and may have to cancel without a few more.  (I would hate to lose this playground for out-of-production fandoms; there are so few places for my best-beloved series.)  This time, I offered FK, HL, YB or BSG'78.  I know that others have offered B5 and FK; I assume that many more are offered, too.

Sign-ups close this Wednesday, 02/29.  Stories come due 04/30.  To review how this game works... )

I'm thinking of signing up for [livejournal.com profile] oldschoolfic, the ficathon for canceled series, even though it's due on the same day as [livejournal.com profile] rarewomen, for which I'm already signed up.  (Usually, I offer 10+ fandoms in this game; I'd offer just 4 this time. And I'd write nearer the minimum 1K words than usual!)  If I should reconsider, please tap my shoulder and remind me of sensibleness...?

[livejournal.com profile] oldschoolfic sign-ups close on Wednesday 02/29; stories are due 04/30.  Players submit three prompts, usually two from two listed fandoms and a third from any canceled fandom ("wildcard"), but the rules also permit multiple prompts in a single listed fandom.  Listed Fandoms in Alphabetical Order )  The game twist this time is that in addition to another player's direct prompt, each writer also receives a third player's random song-lyric prompt.  As always, this game's minimum 1K words may be a single story, or two 500-word stories, or ten 100-word stories, etc.

Are any of you playing?  Considering playing?

Ficathons Update

Today (02/14) is the last day to submit lyrics for [livejournal.com profile] oldschoolfic's spring game.  (Lyric submission is not commitment to write.)  Sign-ups are scheduled to begin tomorrow.

Assignments should go out late tonight (Central Time) for [livejournal.com profile] rarewomen, according to their update.  Assignments were originally scheduled for yesterday.

Nothing new on [community profile] fkficfest/[livejournal.com profile] fkficfest.  Please just keep us in mind!

Here are some ficathons and communities in which I'm not personally involved, but which are being promoted by people I know: [community profile] caffeinatedmagic, [livejournal.com profile] remixers_lounge, [community profile] month_of_meta/[livejournal.com profile] month_of_meta, "Heroes Arrive Last" (mobility-impaired heroes), [community profile] fanart_recs, [community profile] fic_promptly, [livejournal.com profile] scifibigbang.  I thought I would share, in case anyone who might enjoy them had not yet heard of them.
