The [livejournal.com profile] femgenficathon 2011 Masterlist is up.  The game garnered 67 stories in 55 fandoms.  (As you know, by definition, all are gen and star canonically female characters.)

I read perhaps half.  No stories were submitted in my usual fandoms, so choosing what to read across the fest led me mostly to tales where I know the source material, but not the fanfiction.  Of those I read in this game, my favorites are:

Other fandoms represented that some of you might enjoy include Downton Abbey, Life on Mars, Tangled, Chronicles of Narnia, Firefly, and of course Doctor Who (which I can't read because I'm chronically a season behind and ducking spoilers).  My own submission was "Salt Its Tail" (PG, ~7K, Young Blades, Jacqueline).

I support this ficathon's goals, and it's been interesting as a writer and as a reader.  However, there is often a disconnectedness about multi-fandom games, not to mention non-exchange games, and this is both; I think it might benefit from a boost in community fellow-feeling, though I don't know how one would bring that about except by recruiting more writers, and chatting together about it more.

  • [livejournal.com profile] oldschoolfic, the community for canceled fandoms, is currently polling for the timing of their annual winter exchange ficathon.  (At this time, "due after the winter holidays" leads with 73%.)  I've played every game they've had to date, and plan on playing again this time.  (I've written FK, HL and BtVS there; I've also listed myself for YB, original BSG, BATB, Doctor Quinn, MotG, BallyK, and some animated series.)

  • [community profile] last_writes, the community for canceled vampire fandoms, is running its second annual "Trick or Treatise" fest throughout October.  The prompts are recycled from last year, which means that all the FK prompts were submitted by, well, me.  Sorry about that.

  • HL did qualify for the next [livejournal.com profile] xover_exchange game; FK did not.  Sign-ups close on 10/10 at 10PM Central Time.

  • [livejournal.com profile] amilyn created a new fiction community: [livejournal.com profile] tropeathon.  Their first game is "pretending to be married/undercover as lovers."  At first, that didn't sound like any of my fandoms, but [livejournal.com profile] gnosticdiva submitted a Nick/Natalie prompt, and it occurred to me that there's no reason that Nick&Tracy wouldn't work, and in HL there are always flashbacks...

  • [livejournal.com profile] femgenficathon is officially closed for 2011, but is laid-back about late submissions; some are still expected.  I'll have recommendations for stories from this game as soon as the masterlist goes up.  Nothing was submitted in FK or HL, unfortunately — my own story was YB — but the pieces I've read there have all been thoughtful and diligent, and a few have been inspired and amazing.

[personal profile] spook_me/[livejournal.com profile] spook_me, the pick-your-fandom prompt-style Halloween challenge, is open for 2011.  Sign-ups are 9/06-9/15; stories are due and will be released on 10/26.

[livejournal.com profile] girlsavesboyfic, a pick-your-fandom ficathon that runs with or without prompts, as you choose, is open for 2011.  Sign-ups are 9/01-9/09; stories are due and will be released from 10/01-10/14.

I will not be writing for either, personally — I have to finish my [livejournal.com profile] femgenficathon story, among other things — but I'd love to get to read some FK in either of them!  (Or HL or YB. Or whatever ignites your imagination... and mine. ~g~)

Femgenficathon 2011

Monday, June 6th, 2011 09:27 pm
brightknightie: Jacqueline dressed as a woman in front of a fire, and in her musketeer's uniform with her sword (Other Fandom YB)
I've signed up for [livejournal.com profile] femgenficathon, which is, as labeled, a ficathon of gen stories starring female characters.  It uses a variation of the prompt claiming model with quotations (each may be claimed twice), and it's "bring your own fandom."  I'm therefore strongly leaning toward writing Jacqueline from Young Blades or Tessa from Highlander, because no one ever requests them in exchange games, and I love them.  (Of course I might equally write Fleur or Urs or a dozen other Forever Knight women. Or Serena from the original Battlestar Galactica. You never know.)

The prompt I got is: Quotation #47 )

Interested?  Prompt claiming remains open through June 7.  The final date for story submission is September 8 (well after FKFicFest ends).

Addendum 07/08: Sign-ups are closed, but the unclaimed prompts have been released free-for-all style, if you later find you'd like to participate.
