brightknightie: Janette and Nick in the Renaissance ("What makes you think that I'd take you back?") (IB)
Vidders! What are your favorite FK fanvids currently available online? (All the better if you made them yourself, or one of our FK friends did!) If we're lucky enough to continue getting fest sign-ups, I need something useful and short to say on each count-up post. While I can make FK fanfic recs all day long, and point to prompt sites and such, I thought that perhaps vid recs might be the thing to help sway a wavering fellow fan into playing with us. A really good fanvid is so imaginatively energizing! And ... short. ;-) More people might find five minutes for a vid than thirty for a story?

(Currently holding at 4 sign-ups in at [community profile] fkficfest/[ profile] fkficfest. I've posted announcement promos to ForKni-L and LastWrites. I plan to hit FandomCalendar, OldSchoolFic, FemmeFic, FKFanfiction and FKIcons one by one throughout the week. Where will you post?)

The [community profile] fkficfest/[ profile] fkficfest prompts went out very late last night, and, just a little sleep deprived, all day I've been alternately giddily hopeful and heartburningly worried about the matches. If anyone received prompts that she would really rather not write, I hope that she reaches out. We're just so diverse in FK! The only taste that we all share is for this extraordinary show and its phenomenal fandom. Mystery, history and horror; adventure, romance and metaphor; dark, bright and red all over ;-) ... you'd hardly know that we were watching the same series!

In that spirit, I wanted to share a happy mistake that my MP3 player made recently, and what FK reflections it brought. For some reason, the gadget piled all of my many assorted "Greatest Hits" albums into one giant playlist, alphabetical by song title. I would never have put Bruce Springsteen, Simon & Garfunkel and Bing Crosby together on my own, but it's actually the most delightful playlist ever! I'm loving it. By coincidence, however, alphabetical chance spins Springsteen's "Badlands" (1978) and "Better Days" (1992) right together, nothing between, and I keep hearing them as one song in two chapters: an anthem for first-season Nick and all of first-season FK. (Or perhaps it's first season and then the original hiatus that I think I hear?)

Part of my reaction comes straight from a "Badlands" FK fanvid that I'm very, very lucky to have on a VHS tape that I really need to dub to digital somehow before it goes the way of all celluloid. I'm sorry to say that I don't know who made the lovely vid. Dubbed and redubbed and passed around, if it ever had a title screen, it had lost it by the time it reached me. But I love it, and I imagine you would, too. While its raw materials and editing standards are of course VHS vintage and might not pass muster today, it indelibly makes its case for a Nick determined to live now, to live forward, to know and count the true terrible cost but to never stop pushing. Clips of him on the beach over Elizabeth's ashes. Clips waking sweating blood. Clips with Janette. Love, hope and faith... someday. Clips of him with Natalie, with Schanke, with Joan. I haven't actually watched the vid in a few years (the VCR is in the closet), but it unforgettably showed me Nick through that song and that song through Nick. For me, that's the sound of first season. (No offense to Mr. Mollin.) That's the sound, even more than Mr. Mollin's, that reminds me how much I love this story and everything it promised.

Happy Canada Day! For June, in Forever Knight, in my corners of social journaling, here's what I spotted:

Ficathons, Fests and Communities

1 FK work on AO3 currently shows June 2013 as its publication date. It's "Be My Valentine" in tweets, by [ profile] melissatreglia.

Meta (Essays, Analysis, Discussion)

  • 6/25: [personal profile] greerwatson announced and discussed a new FK Wiki article on FKFic-L War 14.
  • 6/22: [Locked] pointed out this "Come Undone" UF or CotK fanvid on YouTube.
  • 6/02: [ profile] pj1228 shared and discussed early reviews of this year's Stratford plays (especially those featuring GWD and NB).
  • 6/01: [ profile] greerwatson announced that a vintage edition of "Mr. Happy's Site," a venerable FK site, is now available in the FK website archive. Additionally, Mel's archive is currently unavailable, so Steph has uploaded a mirror.
  • Periodically, [Locked] posted regarding writing for this year's FKFicFest.

Chiller has ceased to offer a monthly schedule-search, but a search of their entire site turns up no FK references whatsoever. Pfui! Forget Chiller; buy the North American or German DVDs or streaming (and share them with all the thoughtful people in your life ~grin~).

In case you haven't heard, [ profile] hl_recs is holding a "self recs" fest.  I'm hoping it will revive this moribund community.  (One weekly or monthly recommendation of the standard sort would be perfect!)

I must admit skepticism of "self reccing."  My past experience (elsewhere!) has been that some spotlight everything they've ever written, while others remain too modestly silent.  However, this community seems to be handling it pretty well so far.  There have been 31 self-recs by 15 authors since the event opened on 10/18.  Thirteen (42%) are crossovers and a few are AUs; those genres aren't to my own taste, but I know that some of you delight in them.  Today, [ profile] killabeez posted about "Blackbirds," her favorite of her own vids, and last week — excitingly for me; she's an old favorite gen-writer of whom I'd lost track! — [ profile] Teresa_C surfaced with a post about her story "Darling Boy."

The mod invites us all to post about our favorites of our own HL work, and reminds us to use tags (list), warnings, and headers template ).

Amanda's FK Vid

Amanda B., who used to be a frequent fkfic-l writer but has not played FK in years, recently shared her very first FK vid, to Loreena McKennitt's "Prospero's Speech," and I wanted to pass on the link.  It's not a customary music video approach as much as a collection of filtered dialogue clips with music as webbing.  It starts in the second-season present, drops back to Nick's mortality, and then climbs up the years to the second-season present.  It's gen -- or "bring your own goggles," as they say.

Before I list all the exciting FK blog posts you guys have treated us to lately, I'd like to note a development elsewhere. has made the official debut of its Website Archive, which is [ profile] greerwatson's project to preserve FK sites that would otherwise have been lost when Geocities shut down.  She has been working with authors like [ profile] hearts_blood to ensure that things that people meant to go down stay down, but everything that should be saved is saved.

And while we're speaking of things one step aside from my usual scan, everyone already knows about the FK Wiki, right?  I believe that has been mainly [ profile] susanmgarrett and [ profile] greerwatson's project so far.  [Addendum 02/16: Susan observes that the project is actually Greer's, and she "deserves every molecule of credit for that work." My mistake! Well-deserved applause toward Greer, please.]

Okay!  Recently on my LJ Friends List and DW Reading Page:

  • [ profile] fkficfest: The FK-only ficathon community is open (welcome post), and the sign-up post will go up on Thursday 02/18 (three months before the final due date, 05/18).  (Several people very kindly gave us a shout-out: my co-mod Amilyn, Havocthecat and Wiliqueen.)
  • [ profile] femslash_today: On 02/10, I learned that "Femslash Today" is having its annual multifandom porn battle.  Entries are welcome through 02/19.  There are three intriguing FK prompts (no FK entries as of 02/14, as far as I can see).
  • [ profile] 17daysinfeb: On 01/28, [personal profile] celli noted a multifandom ficathon about the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Games.  FK's characters could easily be in Vancouver during the Olympics!  (As of 02/14, there are no tags, and seem to be no FK entries.)
  • [ profile] halfamoon: To see FK-tagged entries on "Halfamoon," go here.  There don't seem to be any yet for 2010, but the event doesn't close for many hours yet.  (On 01/26, [ profile] abby82 remembered her FK contribution last year, and encouraged us to all play this year.  On 01/21, [personal profile] havocthecat let us know that the community was gearing up for its annual 02/01-02/14 multifandom celebration of female characters.  FK's characters are eligible.)
  • Porn Battle IX: The final total was three FK entries, all by [ profile] gnosticdiva.  (On 01/27, [ profile] gnosticdiva catalogued her contributions to Porn Battle IX.  On 01/26, [ profile] abby82 noted that the event was open and running through 02/01.  On 01/19, [ profile] abby82 announced that prompts were being accepted that week (prompts, FAQ).)
  • Gen in January: The final total is one FK entry, by [personal profile] sharpest_asp.

[ profile] help_haiti

Everyone knows about [ profile] help_haiti by now, right?  The fannish community rewarding donations to Haiti relief with custom fic, beta services, and other things in an auction-like structure?  Bidding continues through January 20.  Thanks to everyone who is participating, and who has offered!  [ profile] eponymous_rose is cataloging offers by fandom.  It looks like the FK-specific offers at this time are from: Havocthecat, Triciabyrne1978, Amilyn and Devohoneybee.  [Addendum 01/18: rude_not_ginger and aescu are also offering FK, per [ profile] amilyn.]  (Leela-cat generously made a gesture in FK's direction, but you know she wants HP. ~g~)  [personal profile] amilyn has summarized some offers and information here and here

Vidfests, Ficathons and Gifts
  • On 01/17, [personal profile] sharpest_asp posted a reminder about the "Gen in January" ficathon, for which FK received one prompt (IB: Nick/Janette).  (It's a 500-words minimum, with prompts available to claim from a list, not assigned.)
  • On 01/14, [ profile] festivids went live, and [ profile] abby82 strongly recommended the vid she received in the exchange.  [personal profile] sharpest_asp agreed, and so did [ profile] ithildyn.  Count me in the consensus as well.  Set to "Cemeteries of London" by Coldplay, it's still anonymous, it's the only FK entry in the fest, and it is receiving copious praise for something from our sleepy fandom in a multifandom venue!  It's vampire-centric across all three seasons, features many of the neck-o'-the-week characters, and it musters the elusive "you could interpret this either way" that keeps us happily disagreeing to this day.  Knighties and Cousins may well see different feeds of this vid, and isn't that just the way it's supposed to be?
  • On 01/12, [personal profile] havocthecat pointed out [community profile] purimgifts/[ profile] purimgifts, a multi-fandom event reveling in characters who are Jewish and/or women and/or persecuted by evil viziers (FAQ). FK is eligible (every fandom is eligible).
  • On 01/06, [ profile] fandom_stocking released.  Four people were tagged as requesting FK stocking stuffers, and they all received at least one tiny FK trinket.
  • On 12/29, [ profile] gnosticdiva described the [ profile] dayofindulgence event, and noted that she's planning an FK entry, perhaps an adult scenario.

  • On 12/31, [ profile] abby82 pointed out that has all three seasons of FK (Region 1) on sale for $14.99.  Anyone not own yet?  Buy!  Convince them there's a market for slim sets and blu-ray and missing bits restored or packed as extras...
  • On 12/27, [ profile] pj1228 shared the great news that FK's first season will be released in Germany on 02/19/10, with German and English audio tracks.  Finally!  Cheers to all the German-speaking fans!  (Buy! So they'll release the other seasons, too.)  I can't wait to learn whether it's the full footage from the first German airing of first-season.  Granted, the differences are tiny per episode, mostly just longer establishing shots, but...

Cast and Crew and Airings
  • On 01/13, [ profile] abby82 shared that Mr. Parriot has won himself a new series, USA Network's Covert Affairs.  It stars Kari Matchett (Alyssa).
  • On 12/31, [ profile] abby82 filled us in -- at least, those of us who don't get the Chiller channel -- on GWD's "hosting" of Chiller's most recent FK marathon.  Actually, it was eight fun soundbites over amusing montages (seven GWD, 1 NB).  She has them all linked, and also points us to Chiller's YouTube Channel.  And as she points out, wow! that color quality.

What I've been up to is: work eats my life and health and I would like a different job.  What you all have been up to is the following lovely FK-ness on my LJ Friends List and DW Reading List:

Labor Day Marathon on Chiller!
On 09/04, [ profile] abby82 shared the great news that the Chiller channel is marathoning the first fifteen FK episodes (that's "Dark Knight" through "Dying for Fame") on Monday 09/07.  There may be a better way to observe the Labor Day holiday than with our favorite civil servants, club owner and temporarily dead DJ... but I'm giddy that FK is on TV in the US again!

Last week was the twentieth anniversary of the original broadcast airing of Nick Knight, the pilot starring Rick Springfield that did not get picked up, but provided the basis for "Dark Knight" and "Dark Knight, the Second Chapter" when Forever Knight got its turn a few years later.  Those of you who watched the made-for-TV-movie incarnation that very first time: care to share any memories?

My Nick Knight moments came later.  My favorite may always be a passage from FKFic-L War 8 ("Cinderella's War"), in which a N&NPacker hesitantly explains to a baffled time-and-reality-displaced Nick Knight Nick that: "In your world, we would be Nick&JackPackers..."  Still makes me laugh.  (Sorry that I can't remember who wrote it!)  Another memory is the first time I read a zine that mixed NK and FK stories; I didn't at first understand which were which.  They do look so alike on the page, until you bump into Jack or Natalie, or call for "Jean-Pierre" instead of "Nicholas."

[ profile] abby82 made a fun anniversary vid to the song "Los Angeles" by Sugarcult.  Inspired by her, I got out my Nick Knight DVD and actually watched it all the way through for the first time (the last time I watched NK, it was on VHS, and on a smaller screen).  It's long been my opinion that NK's Alyce "Junk Food" Hunter is superior to FK's Alyce "Hold Me" Hunter, as NK's Janette and Lacroix cannot hold candles to FK's Janette and Lacroix, and that the NK Schanke is not just a younger incarnation, but actually a completely different character, from FK's Schanke, and those haven't changed.  But several elements caught my attention for new-to-me comparisons:  Read more... )
