brightknightie: Trophy declaring "Bright Knight Recommended" (Recommended)

What's Good?  February's recommendation-of-the-month is Susan G.'s "Lost and Found" (1999, PG, ~5K words), written for the charity fanzine A Taste of Forever and never posted to fkfic-l.  I was delighted to discover that she had placed it on her site!  This post-series story grants Nick and Natalie a human future together, but sprouts a new tragedy from the roots of Nick's original vampiric sin.

"There's always hope. There has to be hope. You're a lot less pig-headed than I am--at least, your mother thinks you are. Maybe it won't take you eight hundred years to find your answer. Be smart. Have hope. Survive," added Nick, the last in a harsh whisper, placing his hand on his son's shoulder. "And remember that we'll always be there for you. We'll always love you."
Richie's head turned, his expression doubtful--the weight of guilt in his eyes for the deeds of the past year adding instantly to the burden on Nick's soul.
"We'll always love you," repeated Nick.

brightknightie: Trophy declaring "Bright Knight Recommended" (Recommended)
What's Good?  I'm happy to get to feature [livejournal.com profile] kirbyfest's post-LK Natalie vignette, "Begin Again" (PG), as July's installment in the recommendation-of-the-month project.  (Yes, it's still July! Barely. My apologies for any inconvenience.)  This Natalie is looking forward to a new life, at peace with herself, but is also looking back on an unusual, but entirely plausible and convincing, aftermath of "Last Knight" that argues for the gravest interpretation of canon's accumulated traumas.
Luckily, she'd been sent here.  A good doctor, the continued affection of her friends, and some time and distance had helped her to start asking hard questions of herself, and helped her to start finding some peace with the answers.

What's New on FKFic-L?  In June, fkfic-l saw eleven stories by five authors!  All eleven happen to have originated with [livejournal.com profile] fkficfest; some were revised, reformatted or illustrated after the game.  List with Links )
brightknightie: A stylized representation of a medieval knight on a horse surrounded by a sun. Blue. (Bright Knight Logo Transparent)

I wrote these three tiny stories ("Sky," "Roof," "Bus") as a birthday present for [personal profile] leela_cat earlier this year.  She lives fannishly in Harry Potter these days, and so to gift her something close to her joys, I made this small first venture there.  The ficlets are gen with background slash implied.  My thanks to [livejournal.com profile] much_madness for discussing the idea, and to [personal profile] eeyore9990 for beta-reading.

[personal profile] leela_cat: fervent and fond good wishes, at your birthday and always!

This is the story I contributed to the December 2009 [livejournal.com profile] oldschoolfic ficathon.  My thanks to [personal profile] senmut for her prompt of "Nick and Lacroix, Family Bonding," and to [personal profile] batdina, [livejournal.com profile] amilyn, [personal profile] leela_cat and [livejournal.com profile] much_madness for beta-reading and discussion.  This prompt nudged me to reacquaint myself with some episodes I rarely watch, and revisit some themes I hadn't touched in years.

This is the Buffy the Vampire Slayer story that I contributed to the Fall 2009 Oldschoolfic event.  Thanks to Mikki for her prompt ("Xander/Willow.  The cause is hidden.  The effect is visible to all. - Ovid."), to Elisabeth for suggesting the frame, and to Lara for beta-reading.

brightknightie: At dawn, a white knight raises her lance (Default)

I began the first draft of this story from Nick's perspective, and then started over again from Natalie's to find it worked better, though entirely differently.  The coda from Lacroix's perspective wasn't on my outline; it just appeared, as Lacroixian things sometimes do.

If this weren't a retrospective, I wouldn't have identified the voices like that, because my hope was for the reader to speculate, for the first few paragraphs, that it is Janette.  But of course the character list below shows that Janette isn't here.  I'm wary of detailed headers for that very reason (spoilers) and I'm glad fkfic-l still does not require them.  That preference seems to be my old-fashioned oddity, though, doubtless because there is ever so much more fanfiction than there used to be -- which is a good thing; don't get me wrong! -- and people in more active fandoms need more ways of sorting through it all.

  •  Title: "Last Minutes"

  •   Setting: c.2011
  •   Characters:   Natalie, Nick, Lacroix, Urs, Serena, Lily Toeffler, Catherine Barrington, Others
  •   Quotation: "If most vampires persist in thinking of psychokinetic hypnotism as a magic spell, it's no wonder they don't use it to its full potential."

brightknightie: At dawn, a white knight raises her lance (Default)

This retrospective is rapidly catching up with me, as we come to "Better Late," written just last summer.  I have only three more stories from then to now to list.  Good thing I have a new one underway!

In fact, "Better Late" is not, in all ways, quite as new as last summer.  I first drafted a version of it in 2002; it was from Nick's perspective, shorter, and more conventional.  My perceptive beta-readers didn't like it.  So I set it aside, and did not seriously pick it up again until spring 2007.  In addition to being from Natalie's perspective, the final version has flashbacks, and a presence by Lacroix, that were nowhere in the original.  I believe it's stronger for the changes.  I'm bemused that it took me so long to grow into a capacity for those improvements.

  •  Title: "Better Late"
  •   Length: ~6,100 words
  •   Date: Posted to FKFic-L on July 30, 2007
  •   Rating: PG (m/f)
  •   Summary: Natalie suspects more behind a change in their daughter's custody arrangements than her ex-husband Nick has said.
  •   Setting: 2012 Toronto
  •   Characters:   Natalie, Nick, Lacroix, Others
  •   Quotation: "One reason of many for not telling Joanie had been to keep her innocent by the Enforcers' code if they ever came for Natalie and Nick.  Silence was safety."

brightknightie: At dawn, a white knight raises her lance (Default)

Again prompted by the season, I'm going to tweak this rolling retrospective out of chronology to bring up my one New Year's fanfiction, "An Appointment Unkept," which is also my one true crossover to date.  In this case, the cross is Forever Knight/Highlander.  The story is less about those lost than those who miss them.

  •  Title: "An Appointment Unkept"
  •   Length: ~2,982 words
  •   Date: Posted to FKFic-L December 31, 2005
  •   Rating: PG
  •   Summary: Nick and Darius have a longstanding appointment, but neither of them make it.
  •   Setting: Paris, New Year's Eve 1999
  •   Characters:   Original HL Immortal, Janette
  •   Quotation: "She met his eyes, her own again a rich blue.  The depth of the sorrow there shocked him.  Carefully controlled, it nevertheless went down, and down, and down, perhaps without end."
