FK Fanfic: "True to Life"

This was my match story for the May 2010 [livejournal.com profile] fkficfest ficathon.  My thanks to [livejournal.com profile] wiliqueen for her prompt, in which Nick "has seen artistic revolutions come and go, and has his own perspective on the group of young people calling themselves the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood."  My thanks also to [personal profile] havocthecat and [livejournal.com profile] natmerc for beta-reading, swiftly and on-target.

The opportunity to sweep Nick and his concerns into this milieu was delightfully consuming.  The request to include real historical figures as supporting characters was a new challenge for me, and I learned a lot about balancing historical precision with storytelling momentum.  I have increased respect for those who do it well!

  •   Title: "True to Life" (also on AO3)
  •   Length: 14,644 words

  •   Characters:   Nick, Janette, Others
  •   Quotation: "How often had he truly rescued her, and how often had he unwittingly used her as bait -- or had she used herself?"

FK Fanfic: "Party Favors"

These seven miniature stories were my contribution to the "door prizes" for on-time players in the May 2010 [livejournal.com profile] fkficfest game.  (You can read the whole slate here, with seven more drabbles by [livejournal.com profile] amilyn and one by [personal profile] leela_cat.)

I'd written a drabble -- a 100-word story -- once before, but just the once.  People often compare the discipline of a 100-word story to a haiku.  The goal is to fit an entire, self-sufficient tale into the few words, not just an excerpt of a larger piece; I found it very challenging, and I know that my success varies across these selections.

  •   Title: "Party Favors" (also on AO3)
  •   Length: 7 x 100 words
  •   Date: Posted to [livejournal.com profile] fkficfest on May 30, 2010; not yet posted to FKFic-L
  •   Rating: Assorted
  •   Quotation:  "The little camera on the patrol car's dashboard ensured that Vachon had to take it like a human."

FK Recommendation March 2010

What's Good?  For March, I'm delighted to get to point out Cindy I.'s "Mortal Ties" (2000, PG).  This pre-"Dark Knight" novella lays a baseline homicide case plot, and then overlaps motifs in a family tragedy for Natalie and a flashback struggle for Nick.
With a faint sigh, Nick silenced the nagging doubts.  Now was not the time to worry about his own moral dilemmas.  Tonight, Natalie's pain took precedence.  Despite his resolve not to get involved, he'd found he couldn't stand by while she faced this night alone.

What's New on FKFic-L?  In February, the fiction list saw one new story, "The Macedonian Vampire in New Mexico" (8 posts, 344KB) by [livejournal.com profile] dj_clawson.  It isn't online just yet, but I'm guessing it will join its series soon.

Oh! Don't forget!  [livejournal.com profile] fkficfest sign-ups are open through March 18.

FK Recommendation February 2010

What's Good?  For February, I am excited to finally get to recommend [personal profile] leela_cat's novel "Broken Promises" (1996, NC-17)!  My recommendations project's rules require that I get the author's permission before spotlighting a story; I first asked after this one in '00.  "Broken Promises" links Nick and Vachon's pasts to produce fully-integrated present-day action.  Many minor canonical characters turn up along the way, including the rarely-seen Larry Merlin.
"Damn it, Javier!" Laine began to retort, but stopped when she heard footsteps coming up the stairs. Just great. Now she'd never persuade Javier. She glared at the vampire who entered the attic.
"Vachon..." Nick's voice faltered as he caught sight of Vachon's guest. "Who...?" Doubt, hope, denial. All of them were visible on his face. "I know you. Don't I?"
What's New?  In January, fkfic-l saw three new stories by three authors.  list with links )

FK Fanfic: "In a Family Way"

This is the story I contributed to the December 2009 [livejournal.com profile] oldschoolfic ficathon.  My thanks to [personal profile] senmut for her prompt of "Nick and Lacroix, Family Bonding," and to [personal profile] batdina, [livejournal.com profile] amilyn, [personal profile] leela_cat and [livejournal.com profile] much_madness for beta-reading and discussion.  This prompt nudged me to reacquaint myself with some episodes I rarely watch, and revisit some themes I hadn't touched in years.

  •   Title: "In a Family Way" (also on AO3)
  •   Length: ~7,700 words
  •   Date: Posted to FKFic-L January 30, 2010
  •   Rating: PG-13 (gen)
  •   Summary: Nick makes friends on a flight to Paris to see Janette, but Lacroix is on the same plane.
  •   Setting:   December 2009
  •   Characters:   Nick, Lacroix, Janette, Others
  •   Quotation: "Your denial of the natural law does not alter it, Nicholas." / "Your rejection of hope does not defeat it, Lacroix."

FK Recommendation January 2010

What's Good?  I'm happy to get to kick off the new year in the recommendation-of-the-month project with [livejournal.com profile] pj1228's 2008 novella "Disclosures" (which I had the privilege of beta-reading).  This episode-like story puts both Natalie and Schanke on a collision course with things Nick never wanted to tell them.  Cop plot plus Nick/Janette, Nick/Natalie, Lacroix/Natalie (PG-13).
[Natalie] covered her mouth with her hand and was about to stumble backwards into the elevator, when Nick raised his head and fixed her with an amber stare. Janette turned in his arms and regarded her curiously. ... “Nat, wait,” he called her back and she watched in fascination as his fangs retracted and his eyes changed to blue. “What’s wrong?”
“Lacroix is at my apartment,” she blurted.

What's New?  In December, fkfic-l saw a new ficlet by Kristen F., "Comfort and Joy" (one post, 3KB), and a multi-part story started posting, concluding in January (so to be listed next time).  The list has seen two new stories in January so far.

FK Recommendation December 2009

What's Good?  For 2009's last recommendation-of-the-month, I'm pleased and proud to get to spotlight Mary Ch.'s "Black Ice" (2000, PG-13) today.  Pleased, because it's a satisfying, layered, episode-like novella with something for everyone (well, second-season's "everyone," anyway).  Proud, because I've almost re-synchronized my calendar at last! ;-)

For those seeking/avoiding certain strains at this time of year, let me note that "Black Ice" unfolds in the deep midwinter, with the teaser on Christmas Eve, the body over New Year's, and the tag at Epiphany, as I read it.
He was too late. The daylight had advanced too far. He made a desperate lunge for the door, hoping against hope that he could reach it before the burning forced him to retreat, but in his weakened state the light was too strong and the distance too great. He staggered back to the wall, the skin on his face and hands blistered and smoking.

What's New?  In November, fkfic-l saw one new story by one author: "The Relapse" by [livejournal.com profile] pj1228 (5 posts, 89KB).

Some Janette, Nick and IB Icons

These user-pic icons come from a batch I made for [livejournal.com profile] leela_cat in December, when she was writing her first FK fiction in a very long time.  Those stories mostly starred Janette and Nick, so these icons do, too.  She picked the icons she wanted; these twenty others are available if you would like them.  For a change, they're text-free.

FK Recommendation March 2009

What's good?  I've wanted to spotlight Scottie's "Flowers in the Night" (1993) in the recommendations project for years, and this month I get to!  This short story vividly displays first-season Nick and Janette, when Lacroix is dead and possibilities cluster so thick and unimagined that they hardly know where to begin.

"The club was almost deserted, I was bored, and I thought perhaps two old friends could enjoy a talk and a bottle of wine."  He didn't respond.  She raised the glasses... "It's wine, Nicholah.  Just wine.  Nothing else -- nothing that could contaminate you."

FK Fanfic: "Steamer Trunk Space"

Happy Easter!  With this installment, we come to the end of my little fanfiction retrospective.  From now on, it's new or nothing!  (Unless I retype two or three dusty 'zine properties, perhaps.)

In December, [livejournal.com profile] much_madness challenged me to produce something short on a deadline, noting that she enjoys vignettes and "ficlets," and that I rarely write them.  She's right.  I have a tough time letting FK scenarios go when they're still small.  In reply to her, and inspired by something [livejournal.com profile] wiliqueen said while analyzing Blood Ties, I managed this:

  •  Title: "Steamer Trunk Space"
  •   Length: ~1,400 words
  •   Date: Posted to FKFic-L February 7, 2008
  •   Rating: PG (gen)
  •   Summary: Between the scenes of "Father's Day," Janette packs for the trip in pursuit of Nick.
  •   Setting: 1925 Paris
  •   Characters:   Janette, Lacroix
  •   Quotation: "Prudence often dimmed and drifted, when it came to Nicolas."

FK on Amazon Unbox; also Labeling the DVDs

Did you know that all twenty-two first-season FK episodes are now available, individually, for download on Amazon unbox?  I found out this week, when I sent a season as a gift.  This should be very convenient for anyone who misplaces a DVD, or who wants to carry an episode handily on a player of some sort.

Speaking of of the FK DVDs, I've been thinking again of taking a thin-tip Sharpie and writing the episode titles on each disk.  Highlander, among many other series, managed to come out with the episode titles printed; I can't imagine why FK didn't -- though of course I'm still deliriously grateful for the DVDs, after so long supposing they'd never come.  (The first season DVDs didn't arrive until October 2003, you know, more than seven years after cancellation.)

I can puzzle through the numbered (not titled) DVDs from memory for most of first and third seasons, even now, as the order on the disks is the order in which the episodes aired, and with which we lived for all the years without professional recordings.  But oh! Second season!  For example, I know the production number for "Crazy Love" is "13" but, to me, it's the finale of season two, not something in the middle.  Season two originally aired in nothing like the production order we see on the DVDs, and this makes an interpretational difference I'm still trying to wrap my mind around.  A Raven friend once said that she didn't care whether season two ends on "Crazy Love" (aired order) or "Blood Money" (production order), because both end with Nick in Janette's arms.  However, I think it does matter.  In my imagination, it's still "Crazy Love" that moves Janette to leave, not "Blood Money."  I see the arguments for "Blood Money," as the milder of the two, better supporting the eventual explanation in "The Human Factor" flashbacks.  But Nick's failing to visit the Raven for months (cf. "Black Buddha, Part 1") has always seemed to me supported by the rawness and guilt of "Crazy Love."  I've been meaning to write a story about that for ages...

Ah, well.  The immortal DVDs trump mortal aired order, and here we are.  In need of episode titles handwritten across the DVD labels.

FK Fanfic: "By Expectation Beguiled"

The original idea-flash for this vignette came in the form of a comic-book storyboard with no speech balloons -- no words at all except the message on the answering machine and the date on the newspaper, something very like the silent "The Phoenix and the Carpet" interlude in the back of that issue of Classic X-Men -- you know the one, right? ;-)  But I don't have the drawing skills to execute that vision, so I wrestled the inspiration into prose instead.

The piece includes my best use of Miklos to date.  Re-reading it, I felt I should try to do more with his character.

  •  Title: "By Expectation Beguiled"
  •   Length: ~1,900 words
  •   Date: Posted to FKFic-L on July 28, 2006
  •   Rating: G (m/f)
  •   Summary: A shift at the Raven hinges on personal intangibles that have nothing to do with work.
  •   Setting: Second season
  •   Characters:   Janette, Alma, Brianna, Miklos, Nick, Other
  •   Quotation: "At first, she looked up each time the door opened.  But Janette soon shook her head and settled down to her paperwork.  ...  This was one of the nights when she felt how very good she was at what she did, and how much it was worth the doing."

FK Fanfic: "Fireweed"

"Fireweed" is my longest story to date.  (To my surprise, "In the Light of Day" falls short by 11,000 words!)

This alternate universe diverges during the "Be My Valentine" flashbacks with Janette bringing Fleur across, and then parallels canon, asking what would have been different had Fleur been there.  I named the story for Epilobium angustifolium, a particular flower species [Fleur] that thrives in the aftermath of wildfires ["Ashes to Ashes"] in northern climates [Toronto].

  •  Title: "Fireweed"
  •   Length: ~64,600 words
  •   Date: Posted to FKFic-L in December 1998
  •   Rating: PG-13 (m/f)
  •   Summary: As Natalie strives to derive a cure for vampirism from Divia's lethal venom, Fleur returns to her family.
  •   Setting: After "Ashes to Ashes," with flashbacks to 1229
  •   Characters:   Nick, Natalie, Janette, Lacroix, Fleur, Grace, Tracy, Others
  •   Quotation: "I hope, Doctor Lambert, that you will tell my brother of my attempt last night to dissuade you.  He will be looking for a scapegoat, and I'm not eager to take on the role again so soon."

And Another Thing 10:39 PM:  I almost forgot to mention that "Fireweed" was a nominee in the 1998 FK Fanfiction Awards!  My sincere thanks to those who nominated it and voted for it.  Your kindness still matters.

FK/HL Fanfic: "An Appointment Unkept" (a New Year's Story)

Again prompted by the season, I'm going to tweak this rolling retrospective out of chronology to bring up my one New Year's fanfiction, "An Appointment Unkept," which is also my one true crossover to date.  In this case, the cross is Forever Knight/Highlander.  The story is less about those lost than those who miss them.

  •  Title: "An Appointment Unkept"
  •   Length: ~2,982 words
  •   Date: Posted to FKFic-L December 31, 2005
  •   Rating: PG
  •   Summary: Nick and Darius have a longstanding appointment, but neither of them make it.
  •   Setting: Paris, New Year's Eve 1999
  •   Characters:   Original HL Immortal, Janette
  •   Quotation: "She met his eyes, her own again a rich blue.  The depth of the sorrow there shocked him.  Carefully controlled, it nevertheless went down, and down, and down, perhaps without end."

FK Fanfic: "Send My Love" (a Christmas Story)

So far, I've rolled this fanfiction retrospective in reverse chronological order.  But today, in a seasonal mood, I'm going to leapfrog ten years in order to reach my one Christmas fanfiction, "Send My Love."  I actually wrote it on Independence Day, a little Christmas in July.  (It's the first of three "Where are they now?" pieces I've posted in the past two years -- and by my standards, that's a bit of a kick!)

  •  Title: "Send My Love"
  •   Length: ~2,505 words
  •   Date: Posted to FKFic-L September 19, 2006
  •   Rating: PG
  •   Summary: Mailing Christmas gifts, Natalie bumps into a very old acquaintance.
  •   Setting: December 2006 (alternate future, diverged just before "Last Knight")
  •   Characters:   Natalie, Janette
  •   Quotation: "Well, she had no intention of leaving her place in line, not for vampire, murderer or apocalyptic space debris.  She had presents to send."

FK Fanfic: "And So It Goes"

Where did I get the idea that Janette is particularly good with numbers?  In "Can't Run, Can't Hide," where she does her own business taxes by hand and implies she checks her accountant's work?  I don't remember, but it's one of the character tidbits in "And So It Goes," which I wrote for a very good friend, to whom at the time I still felt obliged to provide ample evidence that I no longer believed Janette had died in "The Human Factor" (I was such an irritating newbie; you have no idea).  Thus this story, my first contribution to the Song Challenge, the longest-running fiction challenge in FK, originally issued by Susan G.

  •  Title: "And So It Goes"
  •   Length: ~6,300 words
  •   Date: Posted to FKFic-L in February 1997
  •   Rating: PG-13 (m/f)
  •   Summary: Janette sees Nick for the first time since he brought her back across in "The Human Factor."
  •   Setting: In Paris after "Last Knight"
  •   Characters:   Janette, Nick
  •   Quotation: "He looked haggard, thin, and he had a beard again -- shaving was always the first thing he neglected when he decided that ignoring his body would help save his soul."
