brightknightie: Tracy at the railroad tracks with snow (Winter)

For the month of November, in my corners of social journaling, here are the Forever Knight items that I happened to see:

Ficathons, fests & communities that welcome FK

  • [community profile] fandomtrees closely resembles the old FandomStocking. Sign-ups through 12/06, fills through 01/05, reveals on 01/06.
  • [community profile] fancake's December round's theme is "amnesty." (I believe that this is an amnesty round and all past themes are eligible, rather than the theme actually being "amnesty" as such.)

FK fanfiction & other fanworks
Archive of our Own (AO3) Summary: 7 of the 1,148 FK works on the AO3 show a posting date in this period.

FK news & conversation

  • 11/17: [personal profile] pj1228 shared a trailer for a new Christmas movie with Nigel Bennett. Read the post.
  • 11/14: [personal profile] pj1228 embedded a video of GWD's narration for the Allward Memorial Project. Read the post.

I often wish that the AO3 had some kind of optional "main character" meta-data tag slot, or perhaps sub-tags for main versus supporting characters. I know that this obviously would not suit every story! And I have no understanding of the technical load! I'm just imagining a mechanism to help find stories primarily featuring a certain character (as opposed to ones in which the character has a cameo), especially for secondary characters.

For example, in OUaT, I learned to open stories and Ctrl+F for "Mulan," to get an idea whether her role was significant, because it so rarely was.

If you also experience this as a challenge in the archive, how do you approach it, as a reader or as a writer? Do you know best practices for search that help identify the stories you seek? Do you use a certain free-form tag or description approach to shout out your stories' main characters?

Just curious!
