Today, Monday 08/23, is the final day to claim an initial prompt on the 2010 [livejournal.com profile] femme_fic / [community profile] femme_fic game, according to the posted timeline.  I forgot about the deadline; I just went and staked a claim myself at lunchtime.  I hope it's not too late to remind others interested in playing.

There are three remaining unclaimed FK prompts (Natpacker and Nanette on LJ, Urchin on DW), one HL (Tessa on LJ), and of course many prompts in a multitude of other fandoms.

Today, Monday 08/16, is the final day for contributing prompts to the 2010 [livejournal.com profile] femme_fic / [community profile] femme_fic game.  You may submit up to three prompts; submitting a prompt is not a commitment to play (though of course they hope that many will play).

At this time, I see 3 [ETA: now 4] FK prompts:  list with links )

There's also one HL prompt, and over 60 in other fandoms, including some crossovers.  Claiming of prompts will run 08/17-08/23.

The 2010 [livejournal.com profile] femme_fic / [community profile] femme_fic game is on!  As always, that community celebrates female characters (gen, m/f, f/f).  However, several rules have changed.  Most significantly: (1) there are no longer limits on eligible fandoms, and (2) it is no longer an exchange/assignment approach, but instead takes a prompt-claiming approach.  This means that instead of receiving a slate of prompts assigned individually, players pick prompts for themselves (up to two) from the full list available to everyone.

Rules and Prompts on LJ / Rules and Prompts on DW
  • Submit Prompts: 08/10/10-08/16/10
  • Claim Prompts: 08/17/10-08/23/10
  • Stories Due: 10/15/10

  • Anyone may submit up to three prompts.  Submitting a prompt is not a commitment to contribute a story, so this is a good opportunity to request a story that you've always wanted to read (starring a female character) but can't write yourself, and then see if someone else's request strikes a chord with you as a writer.  (Please put the fandom in the subject line, and post only one prompt per comment.)

For myself, I plan to submit prompts, and to write if there's a prompt that I can do justice to.  Something gen in FK or HL would be my first instinct.  But in this format, you never know what idea might raise its hand.

    Festibility

[personal profile] senmut introduced me to the "Festibility" event currently underway on [community profile] access_fandom, and I thought you might like to have it on your radar, too.  This multi-fandom festival is for all kinds of fanworks (fiction, art, vids, recommendations, etc.) about "canonically disabled characters or canonically able-bodied characters that you reimagine as disabled."  There are no length requirements and no commitments; the moderators do require labeling and warnings where applicable.  The timeline is 07/15 to 09/15, with prompting and posting both open for the full span. When I read through the prompts on Sunday, there were many fascinating and compelling prompts across a multitude of fandoms, but none yet for FK (and precious few for HL).  That makes sense for FK; in addition to being a small and sleepy fandom, we're short on canonically disabled characters (Nick's "allergy to the sun" isn't the target here, though it has its relevance), and we're also stuck with that "magical cure" canonical possibility in the way (so not the target).  Off the top of my head, the characters we do have with incontestable canonicity are:  Read more... )

(I'm not listing the many killer characters with mental illnesses; that's a wimpy pop culture shorthand that shortchanges us all by minimizing evil and demonizing illness.  It doesn't deserve support, especially not in the context of this fest.  But if someone would like to reimagine one of those characters as making better choices, that could be good, too.)

    A Gen Commentfic Game

[personal profile] senmut shared that [personal profile] kayim is hosting a multi-fandom gen commentfic game called: "I'd Die For You, But I Won't Sleep With You."  Goal: Stories celebrating friendships.  She's asking people to leave friendship-related prompts (one per reply) and fulfillment fics on that same thread.  Customarily, a "commentfic" fits into a single comment post, but she's waived that.  No sign-up, no claiming, no deadline.  (And of course it goes without saying that there's no need to denigrate romance while celebrating friendship.)

No Forever Knight requests have yet been submitted (or any universe that I follow).  There are, however, prompts for The Magnificent Seven, Leverage, DC Comics, In Plain Sight and The Transformers.

Speaking of fanfiction games: [livejournal.com profile] oldschoolfic stories are due at the end of this month!  I'm still not clicking with mine, though I hope all will come together very soon.  Fingers crossed.  How are the rest of you who are playing doing with yours?

    What is a prompt?

My apologies to anyone I confused with my previous post!  I do plan a "Ficathons 101" for [livejournal.com profile] fkficfest; please consider this an installment on that future orientation.

What is a ficathon?  A ficathon (or fest) is a game in which people write stories, usually with some common element (e.g. fandom).  common types )

What is a prompt?  A prompt is a seed for a story.  It is the request that the writer fulfills.  Four examples:  2 by Me, 2 by You )

    Two Ficathons

brightknightie: Three seasons of Forever Knight (Cast)

The 2009 [livejournal.com profile] femme_fic ficathon is now accepting sign-ups here.  (As a reminder, this event celebrates female characters, minimum 1K words, sign-ups throughout February.)  Voting determined that FK will be a wildcard fandom again this year, so participants will need to sign up for two of the voted-in fandoms in addition to FK (or, you know, some other fandom ~g~).  What's different this year is that the sign-ups are not screened, so you can look over what has been requested/offered, and perhaps even craft your entry to match.  This was a very good event last year.

And the Claire Rankin-character Drabble-a-thon (hereinafter the Fleur Mini-Ficathon) is now open here.  Submissions are accepted throughout February (no claiming, no limits).  Some new Fleur stories would be cool (but of course her Atlantis and Voyager characters are also eligible).  Thanks to everyone who submitted Fleur prompts!  For your convenience, I'm sharing them here:  prompt list )

And thanks to [livejournal.com profile] falcon_horus, for having the idea, and hosting!

brightknightie: Natalie on the phone in her lab. (Natalie)
The prompts are not yet consolidated over at [livejournal.com profile] galpalficathon, but in case you're toying with the notion of playing in their no-pressure, no-claiming, barely-a-deadline celebration of female friendship, the Forever Knight prompts that I've spotted are:  ample list )

I've been spending almost all my hobby time lately researching my [livejournal.com profile] oldschoolfic Round II story, which of course means I have not yet begun writing it, and it will end up shorter than otherwise.  Poor Nick.  The first serious, substantive thing I promise to write from his perspective in five years -- the Doctor Who parody doesn't count -- and I twiddle away all my writing time boning up on the historical era.  Bad Knightie... Learning a lot, though!

brightknightie: Nick's caddy parked at his loft ("My Fandom Knows Trunk Space") (Caddy)
Several weeks past, I told [livejournal.com profile] butterflykiki that I would make this post, with her permission.  I'm just now catching up.

When you think "internal combustion engine" and "FK," the first thing that comes to mind is Nick's Cadillac, right?  And then perhaps one thinks of Nick's motorcycle.  But the list goes on!  Cars and related vehicles are quietly integral to the culture in which present-day FK functions.  42 of the internal combustion engines in canon )

In the first [livejournal.com profile] oldschoolfic ficathon, the three prompts I submitted were for FK, HL and Young Blades, all of which I love.  [livejournal.com profile] butterflykiki chose the HL prompt and cleverly made an outstanding story of it starring Methos and Tessa (noted here).  "But why didn't she choose the FK prompt?" wailed the FK-first part of my brain.  Well, all other reasons aside, it was a lousy prompt, I've concluded.  "Internal combustion engine," as a prompt, is less intriguing, less inspiring, than any one of the more specific items in the list above, not to mention a number of other things from history and circumstance under that heading alone.

For future prompt construction, I'm taking the lesson that more specificity is better.  Not so much that the recipient feels dictated to, of course, but enough to gather up the tinder before whipping out the lighter.  And also that curious conjunctions -- for example "Urs and Schanke" (nod to [livejournal.com profile] wiliqueen) may be inherently more interesting than common ones -- for example "Urs and Screed" -- because they present a problem to be solved.

What do you think of "What if?" questions as prompts?

    Community Reminders

Just a couple of quick community reminders:

    • The prompts in the second [livejournal.com profile] oldschoolfic ficathon are available for claiming until tomorrow, Sunday, August 24th, according to the moderator's most recent post.  You're committing to a mere 500 words by September 30, if you decide to play.  (Come, do!)  Two of the 15 FK prompts have been claimed so far (by me and [livejournal.com profile] abby82).

    • The [livejournal.com profile] forsaken_fandom awards project was put on temporary hold because of a tragedy in the moderators' family.  They're gearing back up now (FK nominees).

And now I'm off to the library for a book on McCarthyism, because the prompt I claimed references the "Spin Doctor" flashbacks.  Mmmmmmmmmm: research. ;-)
