brightknightie: Lacroix looking through the chain curtain at the Raven (Lacroix)
Several weeks ago, I followed a link posted by [livejournal.com profile] foxy11814 to a recommendation of her story titled "A Father's Truth," and discovered one of my stories on that same UF recommendations list, on a community called [livejournal.com profile] lacroix_knight.

My first reaction was surprise!  Then flattery and confusion.  My "That Ain't Love" (1999) stars Nick and Lacroix, yes, and examines their relationship, yes, but the title was not selected just for the song challenge.  If you've read it, you know where I stand.  With reflection, the surprise and confusion were replaced by respect for the choice of the UFer, [livejournal.com profile] mysticdreamer32, to list a diverse array of stories featuring her favorite characters, not just easy or cheerleading takes on the combination.  I appreciate and applaud that, and thank her for the recommendation.

If the UF is your thing, you may want to check out that rec list and community both.

This is the story I contributed to the December 2009 [livejournal.com profile] oldschoolfic ficathon.  My thanks to [personal profile] senmut for her prompt of "Nick and Lacroix, Family Bonding," and to [personal profile] batdina, [livejournal.com profile] amilyn, [personal profile] leela_cat and [livejournal.com profile] much_madness for beta-reading and discussion.  This prompt nudged me to reacquaint myself with some episodes I rarely watch, and revisit some themes I hadn't touched in years.

I like to tell myself -- and sometimes other people, so stop me if you've heard this one -- that what I'm looking for in fanfiction is a good story.  Not necessarily gen or romance, straight or slash, just good storytelling however it comes.  Of course it's more complicated than that.  I'm a canon junkie, for starters.  (Mmmmmm, canon.)  I prefer G and PG tales to R and NC-17 ones.  I fall all over accurate historical fiction.  (Mmmmmm, history.)  I won't touch RPF with a twenty-nine-and-a-half-foot pole.  And then let's define "good," never forget. ;-)  But generally?  A good story in any genre.

Other people, wonderful people I know and love, must have one particular subgenre or another to fully engage their fannish hearts.  And yes, they're correct that FK doesn't overwhelm with canonical possibilities those who love slash best, but who are not UFers.  I submit that FK is not a wasteland for them, either, though.  Bring your own scenarios.  Elisabeth, this is for you: Lists )

"How He Loves" was my return to writing fanfiction after a too-long break.  I posted it to fkfic-l on the tenth anniversary of the first airing of "Last Knight," not because it has anything to do with LK, but because, ten years on, we were still there.  Memorial and celebration.  Now it's twelve years on.  And here we still are.  And the airwaves bloom with new shows not entirely unlike our beloved Forever Knight.  Though of course none will ever again be FK, flashbacks and fantasy, mystery and metaphysics, dear friends and days gone by.

(In passing, while this is not a song-challenge story, it was very much inspired by the Air Supply hit "Making Love out of Nothing at All."  There's this game in which every song is an FK filk.  If FK were a pop-rock musical, "Making Love Out of Nothing at All" -- taken down an octave or more, natch -- would be to Lacroix what "Stars" is to Javert.)

  •  Title: "How He Loves"

  •   Setting: Immediately after "Stranger Than Fiction"
  •   Characters:   Lacroix, Nick, Others
  •   Quotation: "Let him think me routed for the moment, if he must.  I know what he must relearn: this game never ends, and I never lose."

brightknightie: Three seasons of Forever Knight (Cast)
[Crossposted from forkni-l.  In reply to remarks on the second-season episode "Capitol Offense."]

Nick getting away with breaking lots of procedures and perhaps contributing negligently to homicide is just a "little bit"?

Well, yes, in "Capitol Offense," it is, because, as we know, the even bigger reality-defying problem in this episode is that Canada would never extradite someone who faces the death penalty.  It's against the law.  If "Capitol Offense" had happened in the real Toronto, the Laura Garfield character would probably be behind bars in a Canadian prison to this day, as I understand it.  They wouldn't ship her home until Texas gave up the death penalty -- which is to say, never.

But despite that infamous blunder nomination for the wall of shame, I really do love two things about "Capitol Offense."  Read more... )

This song-challenge story is the Nick-narrated companion to my Lacroix-narrated "Whence the Truce."  Each stands alone -- that was important for several reasons, not least because "Whence the Truce" appeared in a zine, not on list -- but they are nevertheless a prequel/sequel pair, my only one so far.

  •  Title: "That Ain't Love"

The next installment in this rolling fanfiction retrospective is the most popular thing I've ever written.  I wish I understood precisely why -- I wouldn't mind writing something else popular! :-) -- but I suspect it just happened to strike a chord at that particular moment, almost one year past cancellation.  My sincere and enduring thanks go out to the generous readers who voted it the best vignette of 1997 in that year's FK Fanfiction Awards.

This LJ retrospective on my FK fanfiction now comes to "Billets Doux," which is one of my few stories that have never yet appeared on FKFic-L, and one of a handful to which no one has ever responded.  I wrote it in the winter of 1996, and a friend kindly recruited it for the zine Tojours Lacroix, which came out in 1999.

There isn't much to "Billets Doux," beyond a neglected line of "Fallen Idol" -- Nick says Fleur wrote to him -- but while I'm inclined to make light of it, eleven years out, and supposedly long recovered from my LC phase, well . . . re-reading the story tonight brought tears to my eyes.  If it never pleases anyone else, I'm still I'm glad I wrote it.

  •   Title: "Billets Doux"
  •   Length: ~1,200 words
  •   Date: Published in the charity fanzine Tojours Lacroix (1999)
  •   Rating: G
  •   Summary: Lacroix muses on his loss of Fleur and how it led to his loss of Nick.
  •   Setting: Indeterminate, looking back at 1229-1247 from many centuries later
  •   Characters:   Lacroix, Nick, Fleur
  •   Quotation: "He is what is left to me of her, and his hatred is what is left to me of himself."

"At Issue" tied for FK fanfiction poem of the year for 2000, the last year for which those awards were held.  I am grateful to those who voted for it!  That kind recognition has meant a lot to me.

  •   Title: "At Issue"

Ten pentameter quatrains, rhymed
  •   Date: Posted to FKFic-L on July 15, 2000

  •   Characters:   Nick, Linda Fiori
  •   Quotation: "bound hand and heart to civilized evil"

[Crossposted from forkni-l. Backdated.]

A person wrote me from my website tonight, asking if I could point her to any Cousin-of-the-Knight fanfiction archives.  Are there any dedicated CotK archives or recommendation lists?  Actually, she didn't ask using the affiliation name; she specified that she was looking for good stories about Nick and Lacroix that do not happen to be slash stories.

Coincidentally, I had been thinking about posting to ask for recommendations on a different scenario.  I had gotten to thinking about how we never see Tracy in Nick's loft on screen -- unless I've forgotten a scene?  Even Vachon and Urs get there ("Fever" and "Ashes to Ashes," respectively), and they would seem less likely than Tracy, given how often Schanke popped by.  Would anyone like to recommend any fanfiction stories with memorable uses of Tracy in Nick's loft?  I've been thinking that might be fun.
